Site Speed Improved

Just wanted to let everyone know that we've tweaked the site configuration a bit to improve performance, especially for logged-in users. We've disabled live stats so we lose the ability internally to monitor popular pages and site traffic in real time directly. Publicly, the only thing we lose is the site stats tracked on the forum page showing how many people are currently using the site.

This should improve site speed for guests and dramatically improve site speed for logged in users. It should also eliminate the 'site overloaded' message showing during the day.

We'll be monitoring usage and traffic on a daily basis to ensure things stay snappy. Due to increasing popularity and traffic, we may be accelerating new hardware purchases planned for later this year.

Thanks John, it was starting to get a little disconcerting. I guess it's the price of fame. Wink

You want sourceforge?! It's a joke don't bring it back please.

Non-devs like me hate it.

Run a poll and see.

Regular computer users don't want that rubbish in their browser.

Keep it at updates, have the original packages internally hosted, more professional that way.

Got $15k?

And the response is the same as the last time you brought this up: got $15,000 per month (and growing) to handle that hosting you'd like to give us?

Please stop threadjacking and complaining about SourceForge now.

how much

@scant regard

how much did you pay this month for the download of the software here? Hmm? Not too much? Well then unless you are paying the bill for the download server hosting, you have to live with SF.

I am regular computer user and I want have SF, since it costs me less then any other solution.

SourceForge.net is not bad at all. They provide multiple mirrors surprisingly fast download speeds.

sourceforge

i love it, i think its a great idea and functions well as a hub to find programs and commit to projects.

is it perfect: no, nothings perfect.
is it readily available and reliable: make it happen.

Back on topic:

You're planning to do some hardware purchases? Cool.
Two questions regarding that.

  1. What hardware are you using currently?
  2. And what are you planning on purchasing? (or do you know yet?)

Lease

Currently, we're running on a dedicated leased box that's powering both Apache and mySQL. It's a dual dual-core box (AMD processor, can't recall what at the moment), 8GB of RAM and a RAID5 SCSI array. It's a few years old, so it's all a bit out of date at the moment. As traffic has been increasing, we're gonna need a box or two with some growing room.

We'll be continuing to lease for now as that's the way we're getting full managed, dedicated support (so we don't have to worry about the base stuff, just our Drupal CMS). I'm not sure what we'll be upgrading to yet or the timeframe but it probably won't be for a few months at least.
