SourceForge New Release Failure: Juice, Firefox Beta (Jan 26, 2010)

SourceForge.net has been experiencing an outage across several of their services due to a directed attack against one of their development environments (CVS). To prevent an issue with additional services, SourceForge staff has temporarily disabled new releases (both uploads and mirroring). All staff is on-hand working on a fix.

As a result of this issue, last night's release of Juice Portable 2.2.2.1 and Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition 4.0 Beta 10 have not properly released and are unavailable for download. We have disabled notifications of updates to both apps within the PortableApps.com Updater so users are not prompted to download these broken releases and posted this notice to both app's homepages and release announcements.

This is also delaying release of apps awaiting update. They are ready to go and will be released once the SourceForge issues are solved.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will post the updated release downloads as soon as they are available.

UPDATE (Feb 1 @2pm): SourceForge's release system just came back online. It's understandably overloaded so releases are mirroring very slowly. We're starting to process Juice and Firefox 4 Beta 10 first. We'll be monitoring and ensuring files are properly on multiple download mirrors before announcing them.

UPDATE (Feb 1 @5pm): Mirroring is still very slow. No US mirrors are available for downloads still after 3 hours. Juice and Firefox are still propogating.

Update From SourceForge

SourceForge is still working on the issue. It appears they are getting a handle on things and, hopefully, we can start releasing updates to our open source catalog within a day or so.

Japanese FF4 betas?

Perhaps this isn't the ideal place to post this, but why are no Japanese versions of FF4 betas available? If it's something I can help with, please let me know, but I'm perplexed...

We Do

The link just wasn't on the page. It is now. Of course it won't work due to the SF issue. You can still get the Beta 9 release.

Slow Progress

SourceForge has had all passwords reset for accounts as there was some evidence of password sniffing. They had no direct evidence of them being used, but did the reset just in case. Uploads and mirroring are still offline. We're monitoring things with SourceForge and will continue open source releases and updates as soon as things are fixed.

Any other solutions?

Why can't you just host these programs just on this/another server as a temporary solution? I don't think SF isn't done yet with the issues, maybe it can take a week, you don't know.

Cost

The hosting we get from SourceForge would cost thousands of dollars in addition to our existing costs if we had to do it ourselves. There are no equivalent open source hosts to SourceForge at the moment. Google Code does not accept projects with multiple licenses, nor do they support many of the open source licenses many of our apps are under. And the other open source hosts can't really deal with a project of our scale.

Well,

...we are talking about a few files for a few days, not about the entire lot forever.
I find it difficult to believe you technically can not put those files somewhere on your servers and let users download them, maybe very slowly, but slow is way better than still...

I don't want to be polemical anyway, you surely have your good reasons.

still...

All apps can be downloaded except the FF beta and juice. Its true that John cant release new ones but its not that no one can download anything or so.

My Money

Firefox is one of our most-downloaded apps. If I place it on our download server, it's gonna use a good amount of bandwidth quickly. And that's bandwidth that I am paying for per GB on my personal credit card.

Update (Feb 1 @ 2pm)

SourceForge's release system just came back online. It's understandably overloaded so releases are mirroring very slowly. We're starting to process Juice and Firefox 4 Beta 10 first. We'll be monitoring and ensuring files are properly on multiple download mirrors before announcing them.

UPDATE (Feb 2 @ 4pm): Mirroring is still extraordinarily slow. A file posted 1.5 hours ago has only gotten to 2 download servers (one in Germany, one in Australia). Due to the overload, open source file releases simply may be unavailable until tomorrow.
