PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

I know, not the kind of question to pose here after all the great work by the people behind the PortableApps - but anyway:
Do we really need the OperaPortable any more as the newer version of the Opera browser allows a standalone install (and upgrading "in situ" as well)? I have used both for a short while and really cannot see why I should use OperaPortable - could anyone please enlighten me? Apart from the fact that the OperaPortable is easier to implement with the PortableApplicationLauncher - why use it?

I've rounded up the easiest to find past times that people have asked this question, and it's been given the same answer every time: This is the only one that's truly Portable.

OperaStandalone (by which I refer to the standard Opera edition with "portable" install) is a fully portable edition (as far as I can see), it does NOT need editing of operaprefs after moving to get it to work. I run it under W7 and have moved it around on various drives (removable and non-removable) and the only link that break when moved is my own background picture for SpeedDial (and that also breaks when updating or moving OperaPortable).
Updating (in my case from 11.01 to 11.10 worked like a charm (as did upgrading PortableOpera from 11.01 to 11.10 of course, but in this case we're a bit spoilt :)).
As far as I can see OperaStandalone (version 11.10) does not leave any keys in the registry, but I admit I might have overlooked something here (using regedit to search) - any idea what I should look for?

Everything should be portablized in this release. Though I think the background picture may have been put in speeddial.ini instead of operaprefs.ini where it belongs. I'll add in the ability to make that setting portable in the next release as well.

Other things you place in operaprefs.ini like a local homepage, user-selected custom style sheet, helper programs, etc will all break in normal Opera's 'portable' mode. All of these will be portablized in Opera, Portable Edition. Plus, you get all the other benefits of the PortableApps.com Format version including automatically working with the menu (for installs later this week, too), automatic handling with the PA.c Backup utility, etc:

i use both versions.

1. Opera's USB standalone is portable, but not stealth.
2. PortableApps is both portable AND stealth.

On my home computer, i have a 2nd partition (D Drive) where i put all of my portable apps. so when i do a clean install, i don't have to re-install. It continues to work right after a clean install of "C" drive Smile

But on my USB Portable drive, i have PortableApps' version.

Both have their uses. Both do the job. Im just happy PortableApps supports Opera. Unlike most websites that just jump on the Firefox frenzy/bandwagon. Smile

Re your item 1: Are you referring to the Opera browser installed as a standalone applicattion (which I earlier referred to as "OperaStandalone to distinguish) or Miraculix' Opera@USB?
As far as I can see the OperaStandalone IS stealth, but if you know where it isn't, please advice.
And to make one thing clear: I am not dissing Mr. Haller's excellent portable application - it is just great and the work behind all the portable apps are formidable and I use lots and lots of them. One the other hand, if/when the Opera Company comes out with a good standalone product, they should be given due respect or any points where it's not (fully) portable should be pointed out.

"OperaStandalone" (as you call it) is neither Portable, nor "Stealth":

  • The paths saved in preferences are not portable.

    • Relative paths are supported, but must be entered manually
    • Absolute paths get reset every time the path (including drive-letter) changes.
  • A registry key get left behind on every PC you use it on, and if Opera is installed on the PC that you run it from, it messes up the settings/preferences of the installed copy.
    • HKCU\Software\Opera Software
  • Unless Multi-User is turned off (I forget if it is by default or not, and I don't want to risk testing it on the PC I'm currently using :() a number of files get left behind on every PC you use it on.
    • Specifically, your entire profile directory.

OK - not stealth

Re item 1: I have moved my OperaStandalone about a lot - USB sticks, external disks, internal disks - and paths never have had to be editied manually - so specifically; which paths? And paths do not get reset when a drive letter changes - have tested this extensively.

Re item 2: Conceeded, a registry key does get left behind on the PC I use it on (HKCU\Software\Opera Software\Last CommandLine or the one mentioned).

And if it is true that OperaStandalone messes up the settings/preferences of an installed copy of Opera on every PC that you run it from, I really wouldn't know - I've used portable versions of Opera for a long time and haven't seen a "fixed" installation for ages. But it leaves my OperaPortable from PortableApps well alone. And out of respect for the owner of the PC a portable app is run from, this should not happen of course.

Re item 3: Multi-User is turned off by default, it must be since I've never changed it and
operadefs_default.ini shows "Multi User = 0".
So specifically, which files gets left behind - I cannot find anything left behind.

And as I said, this is NOT to diss the excellent applications of Mr. Haller et al, but if Opera has come up with a decent application, it should be teated accordingly.

PS: This might get lengthy, maybe it should be moved to one of the forums?

A portable app doesn't interfere with software installed on the PC

My point is made.
Regarding your responses:

  1. Any paths that are saved in the preferences that have Absolute paths will either be reset to defaults, or will ask you with an Open/Save dialog box when the path is next needed (or I suppose some of them might just sit there and be broken). Relative paths are supported by Opera, but unless you manually open up opera:config and edit them to be such, Opera will automatically use Absolute paths
  2. Opera uses that key (HKCU\Software\Opera Software) to save some internal settings, which will break those settings for the installed copy; Opera Portable Edition (by PortableApps.com) backs up, and removes the registry key when it opens so as not to have it interfere with it, then restores the original back to the registry when it's closed
  3. I said I was unsure whether it was enabled, or disabled by default, and stated that if it's disabled it will leave the profile behind, however the profile is not left behind (it's used from Opera's current directory) if Multi User is disabled. (Note: in at least one version I tried a long time ago, it was enabled, so that's why I wasn't sure.)

As far as I'm concerned this conversation in now done, I'm going to bed (it's almost 2AM here), so if you want to continue arguing about it then you'll have to find someone else to respond, goodnight.

1. OPERA widget saved in the hard drive not in the the flash drive
2. when i have 2 widget opera start only the first widget

I hope the first point will be fixed.
The second point I dont know why opera start only the first widget.
When i have 10 widget and click on them it will be start the first.(?)
