Programmer's web site offers download of a "portable" version.
That version and this one both leave behind an empty directory at %APPDATA%\SPlayer

Have you tried SMPlayer Portable or VLC Media Player Portable? Both are PortableApps.com releases:

Lately at home, I've been playing with MPlayer WW. It is natively portable (doesn't use registry, but is not in PortableApps.com format). Info found at:

VLC i use many years and the other two have i testing but Splayer i defintive my favorite player.
Very nice Style and the functions are also great, after i find Splayer in the same week i delete my VLC player

I don't read Chinese, but I have managed to find the source link. It is:

The file is 120 MB and took me almost half an hour to download (FF's Downloads window always showed speeds under 100 KB/s).

he's talking about this file http://file.splayer.org/splayer_trunk.zip which is actually the source code and most likely the dependencies to compile it too and it is not 120 megs but really 163 megs

What's the difference between this app and VLC in terms of system resource usage (CPU, RAM, etc...)

Splayer is in most things samly how VLC, but splayer have better look, movie brain funktion(you can close and then open and splayer know the last stoped point), another great funktion is "Make louder 1 000%" and have also a massINone thumbnail maker samly "image Graber II"
and many many more great functions...
since i see first time sPlayer i use only that and im be before a fanatic VLC user
SPlayer is in fact a fork of media player classic with major modifications even though not mentioned on the SPlayer website (at least when I last checked) it did not mention that at all but after looking at the code, a lot of it is from media player classic and the developers of media player classic have mentioned that splayer does use media player classics code.
