Bitcoin

Is anyone making a PA.c version of Bitcoin (bitcoin.org)? It's Open Source and as far as I can tell very portable as I downloaded the zip file, extracted it to my PA folder, did a "Refresh App Icons" and is running it from the PA menu now.

I haven't done a regshot and I don't know if there's any dependencies (.NET etc.) so...

Link

I did provide a link (bitcoin.org) but here's a bunch more:

technologyreview.com/computing/37619

weusecoins.com
bitcoinme.com
bitcoin.it
bitcoincharts.com
instawallet.org
mybitcoin.com
mtgox.com
tradebitcoin.com
bitcoin-otc.com

Some say it's gonna revolutionize the net completely...
Some say it's gonna do for money what email did to traditional mail...
Some say it's anarchistic and out of control and will destroy the world economy...

It's hard to say yet whether it will succeed, flop or be outlawed but it's def. interesting Wink

---

Edit: After checking again it does create a folder (C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin on Win7) but I guess that can be moved because it contains the "wallet"...

Awesome

you gave me a link not even a hyper link, so now as a developer I would have to go search out what the heck it is??

I don't understand!?

Do you need me to put an http:// in front or what? Don't you know how to copy and paste to the address field of your browser? Some browsers (e.g. Chrome) allows you to simply right-click highlighted links and go straight to the address.

True, but you are the one

True, but you are the one asking for it to be made portable.

The least you can do is add some information about what the app actually does (not unlinked urls to similar apps), and include a properly linked url to make it easier for anyone half interested in developing it to find the official site.

You might want to check out the Un-official Request Apps Guidelines for a description of what information you could provide to make it easier for a developer, and an often used template for a new app request.

Here

Here you go.

So. Much. Work. to highlight it, right-click, and choose Search Wikipedia (with Wikipedia selected as my Firefox search). I prefer Wikipedia to the official site because the former links to the latter and explains it, generally in plain terms without news about the site or marketing speech.

As I understand it... and I could be off... your computer's processing cycles are used to make keys, or coins, that are unique, and are traded like currency. You can buy them with real money or sell ones you make (or have bought) for real money, or you can use them to purchase goods from people who accept them. I think. I don't know. It sounds so very weird.

This is the second time I've heard of Bitcoin. The first was in a discussion on That One Image Board about TOR (what they call the Deep Web). I'm afraid of that subject but intrigued by the concept.

Who are you replying to?

@vf2nsr: calm down. Nathan just gave what you asked for (and also, he isn't the requester).
@FluXulF: I'll try to take a look on it, even if it not goes to my to-be-officially-released list. It seems to be an interesting concept. Too bad it conflicts with BOINC.

Basically was

It basically was. The point was that in this day and age, it takes 2 seconds to change your Firefox search provider to Google or Wikipedia, highlight something (double-click a word to highlight it immediately), right-click, and search. It might actually be quicker than getting somebody a link, since you can't do the search off text in a text-box (so, for the person posting, it requires a second or two more).

But it wasn't just directed at you. I've been up here 3 years, and Firefox has had that feature all along, and people have always just said "you need to provide a link" when it would be just quicker to do the search yourself, especially if the other person has logged off for the day, double especially if you're interested in putting together a launcher for it.

I'm not even a coder guy, but if I were, firing off quick searches would be the first tool in my repertoire. Surely there are pages with code help and code examples where, if something just isn't coming together how you like, you can get help pretty quickly. Yeah, OP could have dropped a link. But he didn't. And OP is correct that if you highlight the "bitcoin.org" he posted, you can just "Open link in new tab" (or background tab) in Firefox 4, so that's one click eliminated (changing the search provider). But to OP's credit, he did give information about one file that would have to be moved. That is more helpful than many requesters have been.

Also, volunteer work is great, but it is not immune to criticism. (That is just as bad a fallacy as not being able to criticize something you can't do better.) And it isn't even volunteer work; strictly with regard to BitCoin, it's hypothetical volunteer work.

Anyway, point is, it isn't worth getting worked up over. It's 2011, we have super-fast computers and ultra-moddable web browsers that can do so much for us that we couldn't have done so easily not so long ago.

Also, @kAlug, I'm not sure how it conflicts with BOINC, except both would compete for your processing cycles. Ever since I got a quad-core CPU, I've been wanting to do one of those, but damn, which one? I remember when it was just SETI@home and/or Folding@home. Look up BOINC on Wikipedia (great way to test out that double-click then right-click search feature, for anybody) and just see how many @home projects there are. Then there's all the teams...

Beat me to it...

... and in a much more polite and reasoned formulation... I really just couldn't be bothered with "diplomacy" this time since it's ALWAYS the same here: some developer/nerd getting all riled up just to assert "status" or hierarchy if you like... so.tired.of.it Blum

OT: I'm not really sure what to think of Bitcoin either yet or where it's going. I also happened to come across it a while ago in connection with your traditional Crypto-Anarchistic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crypto-anarchism ... see a "real" link... happy?) projects like Tor, Freenet etc. and was intrigued, but it has really taken off these last few days and there have been a lot of press so... It does seem interesting at least Wink

With regards to BOINC: I've been running it since it was simply SETI@home (over 10 years now) and I think you should more or less ask yourself what you're "into". There's a lot of traditional short-term "beneficial" projects like protein-folding etc. and then there are all the less "practical" (but way cooler, imo :p) projects like AI research, Gravity research etc... and of course you know SETI Wink Also you don't have to "generate" coins ("mining") in Bitcoin but simply stay connected to the network to support it... In fact mining doesn't really make sense any longer, as far as I can understand, unless you use the GPU or gang up with a bunch of other people. Using just your CPU it will take close to two years nonstop to make about 50 BTC (BiTCoins)... So you can easily run both BOINC and Bitcoin... BOINC will eat your cycles and Bitcoin will eat your connections (my Bitcoin client says somewhere between 50 and 100 connections at all times... "usually" around 60)

Jeez...

Why is it ALWAYS the same on these forums? Whenever someone either posts a request/suggestion for an app or someone comments on why PA.c is late again (when it was announced to be ready for release practically the next day... a month ago... again ;)) a bunch of you whining girls jump on the poster with the usual "YOU requested it so YOU better... (whatever the horrible, HORRIBLE person apparently forgot this time according to your anal mindset)" or "John and the DEVELOPERS (apparently a bunch of sacred holy people) are doing this in their OWN time for FREE, you... (some version of horrible HORRIBLE ungrateful EVIL person)"!

Some of us have used the net for close to 20 years and know some (if not most) of the common practices (like searching for something before posting or providing a link to the subject matter to make it easier for the receiver). But we're also "normal" people dealing with other "normal" people in the real world where people can actually do stuff on their own or "connect the dots" if you like... The world actually consists of more than 14-year old nerds living on internet forums just waiting for someone to omit a colon or whatever... and you WILL find "something" to bitch about no matter what it appears!

In the time it takes you to write a post complaining about whatever is wrong this time (be it lacking links or in this case apparently "malformed" links) you could easily have highlighted and right-clicked the link and gone to the site to check it out... without all the bitching! Wink And besides: You don't HAVE to check it out just because someone posts a "request" or suggestion (or in my case actually simply a question)... You ARE free to just ignore it and leave it up to someone else just like in the real world you know!?

I'll give some of you guys some free real-life advice: You gotta learn to LET GO... otherwise the rest of your life is gonna be a nightmare!

Relax, chill out and be cool Wink

There are posting request guidelines

In order to assist a user the user needs to be part of the assistance

Criticism is always welcomed, when constructive

If you do not like the way
PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives is run or its developer and time frames why then come back?

I assist and develop software that is A something I might use, B something that looks interesting or C something someone wants. I do not create on demand nor does any other developer.

I hope someone picks this up for you and runs with it, it truly looks intriguing. Oh and by the way I do have a life and it is not run on demand, but rather my time. That being said good luck and MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU ON YOUR JOURNEY THROUGH LIFES ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURES

Guidelines. Which are less effective than rules, which really mean nothing on the Internet. Even rules themselves are just guidelines that webmasters and forum admins jot down with the hopes that people will follow them. People seldom do, let alone read them, so unless somebody is way out of line, it's pointless to call them on it. Because there are a thousand right behind him. I mean, there are several thousand users browsing these forums, according to the stats, if you believe the stats (I don't).

He posted a legal URL. The forum just didn't parse it. Firefox recognizes it, it just doesn't make it clickable. He also posted information that would help like a file that would need to be moved. The OP gave more information than most people did. And "JFGI" trumps "you need to post a hyperlink". In what? HTML? Most people use BBCode today. At least they use standard HTML code for URLs, as opposed to Strong and Em(phasis) in place of B(old) and I(talics). With such a funny forum, you really can't fault people, who very well may be computer novices, for not jumping through PA.c/Drupal's hoops and getting the code right. If you do, well, you'll be stressed far more than a person needs to be, and, your post reflects that.

vf2nsrIf you do not like the way

I assist and develop software that is A something I might use, B something that looks interesting or C something someone wants. I do not create on demand nor does any other developer.

Again, it is a fallacy to suggest that free work is above criticism. It isn't. While the limitations of the Fist Amendment don't apply to private businesses, speech is generally free on the Internet... unless you're from China, Iran, Pakistan, or some others. Of course, sites are free to drop the banhammer on anyone they don't like for whatever reason, but I have seen forums that have tried that, and they fail pretty hard.

As to the latter bit, the OP did not make a demand of you. The original post is very fair (setting aside the "guidelines"). He just made a request and showed initiative to meet a PA.c developer halfway. I've seen a lot worse.

vf2nsrI hope someone picks this up for you and runs with it, it truly looks intriguing. Oh and by the way I do have a life and it is not run on demand, but rather my time. That being said good luck and MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU ON YOUR JOURNEY THROUGH LIFES ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURES

Tread carefully, sir. John has banned people for excessive and obnoxious use of the formatting tags. Just a heads up, and kudos for the Star Wars reference.

PS: To FluXulF, the above is what PortableApps.com quotes look like. Since I mentioned it before...

Just one more ;)

First of all I wasn't actually asking for it to be made portable I asked if someone was already working on it after having done a search but not being able to find it. I didn't really know which other forum to post in.

Secondly (as has already been posted further down in the thread by NathanJ79) I personally find it much easier to highlight links and select between various search engines or even go straight to the link (like Nathan explained).

Finally if you had bothered to check just one of the many following links (I know it's hard with all the highlighting and right-clicking... moving the mouse and clicking the buttons can be such a "drag" :p) you would have realized that they're all about Bitcoin ("there IS no other" ;)) and not "similar apps"...

Whoa

Whoa there. You could have got all that in one post. I can kinda see why you didn't, replying to different people. I personally hate the nesting system of posts. This forum does have a quote function but it's a little tricky. You have to form it yourself with HTML. The code is below but with no explanation of what it does.

The quote syntax is thus: {blockquote}{cite}Username{/cite}What they said{/blockquote} with instead of { and }. It's just very seldom used. You can get BBCode or BBCodeXtra (Firefox extensions) to automate that for you, though.

Thanks

Yeah, the nesting system is pretty bad, you can't really see who you're actually "talking" to... and I think I "answered" the wrong person in my first post (chronologically speaking) but the point still stands Wink The quote syntax sure will come in handy, thanks again Wink Also I'm using Chrome these days but I'm sure there is (or will be) an extension for Chrome as well Smile

Off Topic: If you're looking for a BOINC team might I suggest KWSN (www.kwsn.net)? Not really spamming here as it's purely for fun (totally non-profit) and I'm not actually in contact with any of these guys... The name of the team just appealed to me those 10 years back when I should/could pick a team, not to mention the fact that it is non-political and international (non of that petty nationalism please ;))

Also I couldn't help noticing your Android avatar so I think I should mention that there's also work on a Bitcoin Android app (https://market.android.com/details?id=de.schildbach.wallet&hl=en ... another "real" link here :P)

I just stumbled upon this

I just stumbled upon this site in searching for a better way to run the bitcoin. I work in the packaging realm and was looking to virtualized it. I was originally thinking thinstall but I don't like the licensing. I am looking at this now but no doubt somebody will beat me to it, this seems a bit more convoluted.

The bitcion client is essentially a crypto currency wallet application and running it securely on a portable physical flash drive is desirable.

Anyway there is no competing for resources with setti or F@H, the next version of the bitcoin client removes the function that uses resources since that is all done with separate software with OpenCL.

Portable BTC

I got a portable version working. No packaging is really required, all you need is to re arrange the folder structure. Install the application to the USB drive and after first launch move the data directory from the user profile (users\%username%\appdata\roaming\bitcoin for Win7) to the USB drive. Then create a batch file to launch the application. I am currently using the following for my directory structure:
\bitcoin-0.3.21\bitcoin.exe -datadir=./data
exit

It may be nice to have a pre packaged version with all the blocks without a wallet.dat file that you don't have to wait a half hour for the blocks to download. When launched without a wallet it should create a new one.

Also be sure to use Truecrypt

i tried reading this post. what is bitcoin

i really dont want to bother searching it as i dont know if the links are secure or not. just a quick simple explanation on what it is will work for me.

thats why i like when people follow the guidlines for posting a request becaus the information is there and one doesnt have to hunt for it. i am not going to say this cannot be done or that it intruges me but i would like to know what it is just for my own intellectual curiosity.

Guidelines = tossed out the window

Way to invalidate the guidelines.

One guy wants links, another guy throws up an angry face when an internal link is posted. Description has been posted, but it's not in the right place.

Seems like John ought to find a Drupal module that changes the topic creation for this forum only to more of a form. Well, it's already a form, but replace Subject (Title?) and Comment with App name, URL, License type, description, then Comment. Shouldn't be too hard to set up.

Honestly, this looks like

Honestly, this looks like some kind of joke to me. Either that or a social experiment to see just how gullible people are.

You can't access the wiki/FAQ to which most of their links lead you to, there is a link on weusecoins.com to weusecarrots.com, they have another site trying to sell off pc's with the sole purpose of bit-mining, and everything about it just seems a little..... off.

The only thing that even half sells me is the amount of activity in the forums.....

True

Yeah, I was reading up on the Deep Web, pages you can only access through the Tor anonymous network, and apparently there is a drug trading post on there called Silk Road that uses Bitcoin as currency.

In fact, the only mentions I've seen about Bitcoin (aside from here) is in relation to the Deep Web. And I've heard far scarier things about the Deep Web than Silk Road. Apparently these Tor-only sites have a .onion TLD. Scary stuff! I played with Tor at one point (long before I heard about any of this) and couldn't do much with it. Now I'm afraid to touch it. I wouldn't be afraid of messing with BitCoin, but I'd like to be able to trade it for legal merchandise. Even if it's just digital stuff, like Microsoft Points or something.

Buy what you want..

How about buying anything you can find on Amazon? There is a service that although clunky you can buy anything you can find on Amazon with bitcoins. You can buy VOIP services with them .. and more stuff is available every day. Not much point in arguing about it here because it is very political and this is a website for a specific technology utility.

A portable version is very handy for this.

relevant?

Not really relevant, the constant argument from the bitcoin community will be that more crime is committed and supported with USD than bitcoin and if you are going to target a currency you should probably first point the finger at the USD. You could also just put cash in an envelope and send it to a PO box.

How about the hidden crime of stealing from the American public by devaluing the USD? The main point of bitcoin is that no government or bank controls it and there will only be a set number of bitcoin in existence.

if hackers want to do it they very much so can. nothing is 100% secure.

Also your fingerprints are on the dollar bill and possibly DNA. the dollar bill also has a serial number that makes it more traceable.

hey guys. I hope someone decides to do this. Could be really interesting.

I installed to X:\StandAloneApps\Bitcoin. Installer gives option to NOT install shortcuts to host PC.

Created directories under %APPDATA% user profile.

There are about 13 .lock and .dat files created under this directory.

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Bitcoin\Database
.log file about 9MB. forum states this will grow as system runs.
