Hi guys,

I was using DVDStyler Portable for a while with no issues

The new version 1.8.4.2 somehow exposed some weird relationship with reg.exe ...?!

http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=6414721DVDStyler_Portable___Reg-exe.png

and the nsXX.tmp , where XX is generated numbers are created in temp folder every time DVDStyler stars. I'm blocking the requests to no avail. The program will start though , but that's really annoying

What kind of business any portable App can have with reg.exe ???

Thanks in advance

There are no changes in how it uses reg to import a registry key temporarily from the previous release.

Thanks for the reply John,

Unfortunately - No - something was changed & that's why I posted that.

Neither previous Portable versions no full package with installation which I was using in the past were exposing such behaviour.

Nothing changed regarding the HIPS here

So now, since mentioned .tmp files are generated during the program's startup & having random new names it doesn't matter how the alert is answered. I have to deal with it every single time.

I would probably return back to the "normal installation" & then let you know

Again, there's no change in the launcher other than an update from NSIS ANSI to NSIS Unicode, which I don't even think happened in this version. Since DVDStyle Portable was introduced, it has created NSIS plugin files in temp while running and removed them on exit. Since introduction, it has used reg.exe on the local system to import the registry key (where DVDStyler has to maintain its settings, it has NO portability settings or options itself) to use while running and export and remove when exiting. There's nothing new in the code at all. Every single version has used temp, created a unique directory, extracted DLL plugins and run reg.exe. Every single version.

Some poor antivirus/antimalware apps will alert on this behavior, but there isn't a whole lot that can be done about it. The fact that it is alerting now but did not before (for no apparent reason other than switching from ANSI to Unicode) says a bit about whatever product you're using. From what I recall, Comodo is *horrendous* about such alerts.

Does the same happen for apps that use the registry but use the PA.c Launcher? Apps like AkelPad? If not, then I'll switch DVDStyler to PAL on the next release to get around Comodo's continued erratic behavior.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thanks again, John

Please don't make any changes yet. You (we?) cannot or rather should not "adjust" to the freakishness of different security

In addition my post was not a complain by any means Smile
I just stated a fact - the thing I've never seen before

I can leave with that - not a big deal... or probably something went wrong with current Defense+ version that I have (that is not the latest one as a matter of fact)

Would you be so kind and somehow let me know where I can download previous portable version of DVDStyler,
That would be easier/faster for me to test compare to "full installation" version

My regards

Thanks for the link, Simeon

I tried to download yesterday evening several times, but there were no responses from the server Sad ... Will retry later 2day

they are mirrord. Maybe you should try a different one?

Greetings!

Eventually I was able to download v1.8.4

Well, indeed I got the same Alert. It 's just a matter of a bit different timing when that happens

My apology... just forgot and most likely was simply ignoring that in the past

Well that's not a problem at all - just one click to allow when the nsXXX.tmp folder is created within Windows temporary directory

Cheers!
