Portable Apps on SDHC Card

I have been successfully using portable apps on a removable sata drive.

However, I tried to migrate to a lexar 133x class 10 sdhc card. It was unusable.

I am curious if others have been successful using PA on an SD card and what their success has been.

I called lexar and they did state it should not be a problem but cautioned that excessive writes would significantly shorten the life of the card.

thanks, George

Search

There have been a few such discussions - try searching for terms like sdhc.

EEE PC

I have been using them for years on my Eee PC SDHC card.
It is made by AData.
Never any problems.
It seams to run just as fast on the card as it does on the hard drive.

I did not try PA on other cards. There may be a difference.

This is curious because after doing research it seems to be the consesus that their is a limitation. Their seems to be some workarounds the best sounding like usb supercharger.

Reader-Dependent

Unlike flash drives that have all the tech inside the drive to handle reading and writing, SDHC cards are 'dumber' and more of the tech is in the 'reader' you plug it into. My old laptop, for instance, had a horrendous reader that would spike the CPU and result in very poor reads and writes.

Autorun PortableApps on SDH Card

I posted a script as a solution and to aid a few friends made a compiled version available at http://autorun.inkmon.org It is free

I use SDH cards as they are cheaper than USB drives. So far I have not had one fail. I do back up though.
Basically you run the program prior to inserting the card. It aborts after the action cutting down extra drain on resources.
The program is UsbLoader.exe and reads Action.txt which when PortableApps is installed will autostart PortableApps. The file Action.txt replaces autorun.inf and has the text
Run
PortableApps.exe

I use PA and was annoyed when MS changed the autorun option 'Run Application'
I will be making a help file and additional options eventually.

How it works is simple.
UsbLoader.exe once started gets a drive list then waits for that list to increase or decrease. When increased it works out the assigned drive letter and reads the file Action.txt. performing the command. initially 'Run' Second line is the program or document desired. Sometimes a path is required.

So place exec in folder and place a shortcut to it on desktop. I use Avast as my AV program and Maleware bytes to protect my system and applications.
I am offering this as a solution until PA includes something similar down the track or this becomes widely accepted. Smile I live in hope. There is a comment form available for suggested improvements.
