Hi all.
Just to share something i thought was interesting. Couldn't find any one else discussing or mentioning this so here goes.
I started a download from utorrent off my external HDD, and maybe about halfway into it i decided to eject the disk. Went about my ways, watched a dvd, came back to find my torrent completed. With utorrent portable still running.
checked the task manager (Windows7) and opened the file location, it simply went into the Desktop\Computer folder but obviously can't show the usb disk that was pulled out.
portable apps, like a boss!
there are many thing which may keep running, in this case it is not the actual whole app, but simply the protocol and the task you have started.
BUT! do not be too enthusiastic about such things. Programs not closed properly will not be able to clean components stored on the local computer and this can lead to other unpredictable results later.
So if you intend to remove a stick, it is much better practice to close all programs before, so you have clean situation next time you want run it.

Most launchers are coded so that even if the drive is pulled and the app crashes, they still get the registry, appdata, etc right back the way it was. And by most I mean every launcher we have I can think of at the moment.
