logojPortable 6 Update 27 (formerly Java Portable) has been released by PortableApps.com. jPortable allows you to easily install the Java® runtime engine to your PortableApps.com-enabled device for use with portable apps like LibreOffice Portable, all without any Java runtime on the local PC. This release updates the included Java® runtime environment to the latest release. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format for easy use from any portable device and integration with the PortableApps.com Platform. It's freeware for business and personal use.

Note: The PortableApps.com Updater in 'Next' Pre-Release 2 does not yet update add-ons, just portable apps. This ability will be coming in a future release. For now, please download and install this as you would a new app.

Features

jPortable allows you to easily add a Java® runtime environment to your portable device. It automatically works with apps in PortableApps.com Format like OpenOffice.org Portable. No Java® runtime environment needs to be installed on the local machine and no admin rights are required. The JVM will be downloaded directly from Oracle's servers as part of the installation process.

jPortable Launcher

In addition to using jPortable with portable apps packaged in PortableApps.com Format, you can also use our jPortable Launcher to run Java apps in JAR format. It will even automatically portablize the settings of many Java apps.

Java Portable Apps Coming

This release of Java Portable marks the beginning of Java apps on the PortableApps.com Platform. We have an array of Java-based portable apps in testing and will begin releasing them soon.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

jPortable is packaged as a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

jPortable is available for immediate download from the jPortable homepage. Get it today!

You mean as stated directly on the download button?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

This reminded me to ask: why is the installer 14 MiB? Does it include something not already included in the additional download?

John T. Haller's picture

It includes the parts of Java that are generated at install time by the normal installer.

No. I mean when I run 14Mb installer, it delete all already installed files and start download something 14Mb long from Internet. And when download fails, it leaves corrupted installation =_=

The installer is two parts, the parts that are included and the parts it downloads from online (hence 14+35MB on the download button and the Online Installer note). Both are required for proper installation. You need to be able to download a standard Java SE installer from Oracle's Java site. The installer can do it for you, or you can download this and put it in the same directory as the installer. If you're in a location that blocks it, it will fail.

Oracle haven't allowed us to do it, IIRC. This is also the reason it's called jPortable and not Java Portable.

Ah. Sorry.

By the way. Can you somehow update description with info on downloading JRE installer and running portable installer with it? It's very useful.

This kind of info (the URL of the online file) must be present at the details section of every online installer-based app's page.

Do our Chromium-based browsers support using this as a plug-in?

None do, as explained on the jPortable page. The Java plugin is closed source and relies on a local registry key within HKLM to point to the right location of the JRE.

I installed this and went to the Java test page and it said it wasnt installed

It's stated in a number of locations that jPortable doesn't work in portable browsers at present, and that they need a local Java installation.

Ah I see you are referring to the headline of the post above mine.

"jPortable allows you to easily install the Java® runtime engine to your PortableApps.com-enabled device for use with portable apps , all without any Java runtime on the LOCAL PC."

"No Java® runtime environment needs to be installed on the local machine"

I have the jportable 6 update 24 running on my other firefox portable 3.6.16

the post above yours is referring to chrome,Iron,And Chrominium browsers, and the latest firefox 6 I guess.

So why is the latest version not supported?

John T. Haller's picture

jPortable is for Java apps and apps that use Java like OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice for specific features. It doesn't currently work with any portable browser. It worked with no previous versions either. There is a note on the jPortable page about it: "(Note that Firefox currently requires a local JVM, but we're working on it.)" The note pre-dates the introduction of other portable browsers. This was never a big issue as running Java apps in browsers is a relatively niche need and most folks don't do it.

We'll shortly be introducing a test release to have it working.

Oh I see, theres a difference between the "release" post and the actual Jportable page. They looked so similar I thought that the features at the top of the post were a link to the jportable page.

And your right I looked and I did have it installed on my computer already.Well guess ill just save space on my usb stick and uninstall it.

So basically theres no way to run java runtime without a local install? No work arounds?

You'll see an announcement about official support in the next 2 weeks. It involves changes to a number of things to work properly without breaking other things.
