The above link takes directly to a related topic that highlights a problem that I had with Sunbird. This problem contributed to my becoming aware of Lightning. I now have a couple of questions about Lightning.
First, is there any significance to the fact that the problems discussed in the aforementioned topic that occurred with Sunbird do not occur using Lightning?
Second, what are the primary differences between Lightning and Sunbird, as I notice a significant difference in the size of the two applications? (I understand that some of the difference can be attributed to the fact that one is a stand alone program whereas the other is merely an extension, but does this explain the entire difference in size or are there more substantive differences?)

Sunbird had to make the whole GUI itself, while Lightning uses TB extension code to write it.
Add that to the fact that an extension is a whole lot of pictures and plain text files and you have your reason.

rmccue,
Thank you for your reply. Since my posting I have done some more research. There seem to be some substantive differences between Sunbird and Lightning. For example, the "category" field within the creation of an event that is present in Sunbird is absent within Lightning.

Lightning is newer and probably has less crud in the code.

Actually, Lightning and Sunbird are using the same code base now. Lightning is just made to work within TB and SB is made to work alone. It's the calendar extension that has been abandoned.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I gets it now.

Actually, now that you mention it, what I am using is the Lightning extension that one installs via Thunderbird and that is located here:

I hope that this is not the abandoned extension you were referring to because it works where Sunbird fails.
