I have about 72 portable apps installed and PortableApps.com Menu (opened with Start.exe) takes almost a minute to load application list. It shows loading bar, but when switched to other task it gets hidden (which happens with me almost everytime), and when I try to click tray icon, it doesn't respond. I am requesting to create a "disabled" icon for tray to identify that it is loading apps list so I should wait rather than clicking it again and again.
or perhaps add a loading animation to the PortableApps Icon in the Tray / Notification area?
I've got the same 'problem' in that on older computers with maybe USB 2.0 (possibly USB 1.1) and a mid-range USB Memory Stick (with quite a few PortableApps installed) it takes about a minute (or more) for PortableApps to finish loading.
Personally, I'd be happy with a loading animation added to the PortableApps Icon so I could see if it was still loading.
Side Note: This may not be a problem for newer computers though, just the other day I put that memory stick into a new (i7? with USB 3?) computer and it seemed to take less than 10 seconds for PortableApps to finish loading
I am not sure, loading animation might be slower on some old computers and Wine on Linux. A static icon will do it. For now, I have made shortcuts for most used apps to open them quick rather than waiting for menu to load.
I would also consider an alternate status icon enough. To speed things up, icon caching is on the roadmap for one of the next releases.
USB 1.1 really is a bottleneck, but USB 3.0 should not be faster with the same drive than on a USB 2.0 port if it is not a dedicated USB 3.0 device. Maybe something additionally slows down the older computer (Microsoft Security Essentials have a can have heavy impact on icon reading).
