I've posted a build of the PortableApps Menu with a fix for the issue seen on laptops with high-res LCDs. This new release should work with both normal (96dpi) and high-res (120dpi) settings in Windows.
Download PortableApps Menu 1.0.2 Beta 2
Place this file in your X:\PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu directory (replacing the existing one).
UPDATE (November 21): It's been updated to 1.0.2 Beta 2 (Build 1.0.1.2). The following fixes are included (over version 1.0.1):
- Form no longer scaled when running on 120dpi system
- Folders/files of listed apps unlocked when performing a software install through the menu so in-place upgrades will always work
- Location added as tooltip to app icons so you can tell where they are running from
- Working directory set to the path the app executable is in so not-quite-portable apps will work better
NOTE: Please don't make feature requests in this thread. This thread is for reporting on testing the current set of enhancements and bug-fixes ONLY.
Still doesn't fix the problem when you select a program, it will not let you select another, or close or anything.
This is a specific fix for a specific problem. Don't thread hijack, please. If you have a specific issue, post it in its own topic.

I downloaded it and tested it for you, I'm just telling you of a problem that i have. I don't know if its just me or what but i figured this is the spot to put it.
You mentioned it in another thread where I asked additional questions to which you still need to respond.
This is a specific build to fix *ONE* specific problem. It does not address any other existing issues.
Sorry if I wasn't specific about this in the original post.

O i just noticed the post got moved sorry about that.
It works great on 120 dpi. I see the values are hard coded in pixels
Yeah, they have to be. The only way it works right is to keep it a fixed size. (not to mention the fact that it's HUGE if it would scale up) 120dpi messes up lots of stuff within Windows (including just about all display of icons everywhere) due to the fact that Windows wasn't really designed to support different dpis (it was tacked on later, as much of Windows newer features were).

This fix is working well for me. WinXPSP2Pro 1280x1024 120dpi

It's been updated to Beta 2 and a threw in a few more bug fixes and feature requests.

John,
Awesome job on the new suite. Thank you!!!
Fix works fine on a 1400x1050 display.
I wonder of Vista will work well with 120 dpi screens? I am thinking of going back to a "standard" 1024x768. Too many issues with 120 dpi as you mentioned.
John,
it works 'quite' fine for me (win2000 120dpi): when you change to large font (option->large fonts) it truncates the long names of the apps (i.e. open office stuff) as we can't resize the menu window, but of course this is a minor issue.
Location added as tooltip works fine.
Anyway, a very good job: thank you!
Hi,
Appsmenu is good work clean design, nice looks but still it needs some option to be permitted such as select which apps to show and hide.
The design allows to add your own apps to PortableApps folder and application is directly listed when you access it next time.... great feature but issue I have notice is when I copied TrueCrypt 4.2a folder to this location now when accessing AppsMenu two TrueCrypt apps are listed one of Apps and other of format utility. So i think it take exe files listed directly inside the folder but when i create a subfolder in truecrypt and place this format.exe it not listed but truecrypt does not 100%.
Also i have noticed that 1.01 i was able to use it in windows 2000 but later it fails to respond if it minize to system tray for sometime. Still will confirm if that is noticed on all win2k machine i have.
I will currently stick with Pstart as my primary appsmenu tool since it allows me customization.
Portable Device : JetFlash V30 1GB
using PortableSuite Lite 1.0
With Regards,
Nikhil Bendre
I would have the tool tip display the full filename, not just the path. I too have the problem with Truecrypt where it displays it twice. Both of these reside in the same directory. Displaying the filename would help tell the difference between these and other apps with this problem until some kind of fix is introduced.
the menu available for download by itself?
I don't have enough juice to get the whole suite.

It's just PortableApps Menu + PortableApps Backup + custom icons and folders and autorun.inf. Under 1MB. Then add the apps you want.

I assumed that was it, but I didn't want to waste bandwidth.

I think you should make the suite that store the information of any portable apps, so that next time when you come in, the suite will only take the information from the files that stored the information and no need to research all the portable apps again.... I'm using USB 2.0 Kingston Traveller 2 and it took 3 to 5 minutes to load all my apps....
If you make a files like the Pstart.exe that store the information that would be nice but make it like that, you can make different version like USB version and Disc Version so that disc need to reload all files but USB no need to do that, juz read from the files that stored the information of the apps..
Still can't erase links on the start menu or organize them in categories.
As mentioned in about 5 other threads, this is a planned feature for later. Please don't make features requests in a new release testing thread that only fixes the issues specified.

Ok
In that case it's an execelent job.
Suggestion:
Only allow 1 instance
a template for autostart.inf inside the package
otherwise, very very good package
Hi John
It works nicely for me too from an 80GB portable drive from transcend

Yesterday, I installed PortableApps Menu 1.0.2 Beta 2. I'm now using it here, on a computer at school, and I have graphical errors. When I hover my mouse over the programs and a tooltip shows up, and I move my mouse to another program, I see the menu flickering. Is this a known problem? I there any fix for it?
The programm is fantastic. But the language is not so good. I come from Germany and i would this programm on German.
My English language is bad.
Thanks

I have Download PortableApps Menu 1.0.2 Beta 2 and gave it a try.
I have placed the
documents folder
portableapps folder
portableappsmenu.exe
in a Folder called P and placed it in the Drive E.
When I Launch portableappsmenu it displays the other folders
in E drive. Is it necessary ?
Further I would like to rightclick on the system tray icon and exit menu to appear.
New feature request
-------------------
Is it possible to group the applications through a configurable xml file and also an built in xml editor to do that job. For eg.
Like outlook expresss applications tabs
I would like to create and XML file and place it in the root directory of Portable applications and it will display the menu according to my choice.
I have given a sample xml file at the end of my previous post
It gets displayed only in edit mode. why?

Does the PortableApps Menu except any command line arguments?
Specifically exit or quit?

I switched to 120 DPI on this machine (XPSP2, 1400x900) and immediately noticed the problem with 1.0 menu. This patch fixed it. Thanks!
Hello John;
I just tried out your beta menue for the first time.
I am useing it on a Windows 2000 Pro PC. I have your apps in a directory on my hard drive called "Suite". Your beta un like "1.0.1" picks up all kind of stuff not in my subdirectory "portableapps". It does not seem to pick up anything in that drectory.
I can not seem to clear it either.
Frank D. Hubeny
Did you place it in the right location? I made that mistake when I first downloaded the beta. This is *not* the file you put in the root of your portable drive. This file has to go in \portableapps\portableappsmenu for it to work properly.
As for the actual beta on my machine. Works perfectly. Lets get this out into a full version then move towards 1.1
Hello Wunderbar;
I think I need to go back to reading school. That is exactly what I did.
When I put the file where it goes all is well.
John I sure am sorry if I misled you or any one else.

This fix is working well for me. WinXPSP2Pro 1920x1200 (120dpi?), PortableApps menu with small fonts.
With large fonts, it works better, the only thing is that the labels are cut, because with all OpenOffice.org portable application labels are too long. ("Portable" is partially cut)
At 120 dpi, and with the "Large Fonts" option set in PortableApps Menu, the 's' gets truncated off of the "Documents" menu item. (And it would be more convenient if the "Large Fonts" option persisted.)
I just got the chance to test this beta 2 fix and it works fine with my 120dpi laptop setup. Thanks again.
What would be cool is to have a scroll bar to more efficiently locate applications on the PAM instead of tapping on the up or down arrow.............

Had the 120DPI issue on this Acer Aspire 9300 running Vista Home Basic. This unit uses a 1440x900-32bit display mode with the nVidia GeForce Go 6100 Chipset. Tried the 9xdpi setting and distortion was eliminated. D/L the beta PAM, installed it and tested on both settings. Work's great.
Is there a limit on the number of Apps available in the PAM list?
Thanks for the great product/solution....
