Issues?

What are your install issues?
What is the error message text?
Can you supply a screen shot of the error?
What is your operating system?
What permissions do you have on the system?
Where do you have PicPick Portable installed to (path and media)?
Have you tried installing the local version of PicPick?

I have been using PicPick Portable on a regular basis for over a year across multiple machines, operating systems, networks and permission settings. Every issue I encountered has been resolved so what ever your problem is, if it is specific to the portable version, it can be fixed.

That seems to be a general

That seems to be a general issue with online-installers where the download-file contains version-numbers (which change if updated so that the installer can't find the old file anymore if it's not kept online by the original developer).

There is no other way than updating the installer every time, the app is updated. Or maybe change the criteria the installer looks for, e.g. appx_v1.2.(var>=3) (sorry for my amateur descriptions, did my last codings some years ago).

The problem with this is that an app could be destroyed as it is updated by deleting the old one before the new one cannot be installed.
Prapper did a good job to prevent this with the installer for glary-utilities, maybe it found its way into this installer as well

Still trying

I found version 2.3.4 but it was a zipped file.
Is there a way for the installer to look at a PicPick file folder instead of going to the website and downloading the latest version?
That is the way it worked before wasn't it?

Good idea.

Perhaps the installer can be set up so that, if the download fails, it automatically allows you to browse for a local installer.
Also, the installer should be set up so that if the install fails it doesn't pooch the existing installed version.

I had the same installation issue.

It seems that PicPick does remove its old versions as soon as the new one is released.

Prapper, it seems like PicPick releases a new version about every month! Unfortunately, it looks like you have to play eternal catch-up with your installer to make sure your users can download the current version.

Bummer.

Online Installer Not Working

I just tried to install 2.3.4 dev test 1 and it failed Win 7, 64Bit.

The installer reaches the online part and tries to download file/s and then I get this message:

PicPickPortable PAF InstallerThe downloaded copy of PicPick 2.3.4 is not valid and can ont be installed. Please try installing again.

So I click "Ok" and then I get another message:

PicPickPortable PAF InstallerThe installer was unable to download PicPick 2.3.4. The installation of the portable app will be incomplete without. Please trying installing again. (ERROR: OK)

At this point I just have to "finish" the installation. As another user reported, this might a consequence of version 2.3.5 being available.

Updated to 2.3.5 Development Test 1

See release notes for changes.

Just to let you know, this is the last time I'm going to update this so, if you want to take it over, leave a note here and go for it.

I don't mind the frequent updates but the constantly changing attempts to install toolbars has become fairly tiresome.

Understandable

Any planned alternatives?

Thanks for all the work you have put into it Smile

Too bad

That's a bummer because I tried it and liked it (got it working by downloading the latest version and copying the appropriate files to the PAF version that was missing them). I figured something like this could replace about 3 or 4 of my apps.

Does anybody know of an alternative, preferably open source? If not, I guess I'll stick with what I have. Thanks for your efforts, they are appreciated.

Alternative

I'm currently looking at Greenshot. Not as featured packed but FLOSS and being open source can always request features in PicPick be added to it.

Plus for Prapper, no toolbars Smile

Thanks

Thanks, I'll have to check it out. It seems like they are rather under-selling it a bit, at first glance it looks like nothing more than a screenshot tool. However, I see it has a basic image editor included. I'm most interested in a ruler and a color picker (the latter it looks like it has too?).

Anyway, thanks again I'll take a look.

.NET

Sad

I looked at it and thought that it could replace Lightscreen and be heaps better. But then looking in curiosity at a blog post on the working set (EmptyWorkingSet was the DLL call key to reducing memory usage in PAL 2.0), I saw references to .NET. Having checked further, it's written in C#.

So I don't think I'll do it after all...

Not Quite

In addition, I just looked at it and I wouldn't really call it a replacement for PicPick. There isn't anything I can do with it, that I can't do with IrfanView or XNView, save for a few minor little features like "Obfuscate" (although even that can be done with some finagling). It seems like it's a tool that would be useful if you write a lot of documentation (with screenshots).

.Net is a big turn-off in my book though. Sad

Lightscreen

I said Lightscreen.

Some of its features look pretty nifty - easy magnification boxes, rulers... I'm not aware of anything in IrfanView or XNView or really any other tool which I've used or seen which can do either.

Sorry for Confusion

I was really replying to Horus, but tacking on comments to what you said. My mistake for not making it clearer.

Summary: PicPick = great, GreenShot = not-so-great, doesn't really offer anything over IrfanView or XNView, and it's .Net.

Lightscreen is too buggy IMO (although maybe it's been updated lately).

For ruler, magnification and basic color picker I use PMeter (same developer as PStart). It's portable, small and it works.

Understandable, but sad to her …

Fairly understandable, all that toolbar hassles everytime, plus the constant updates. Still, I’m sad to hear that you’ll have to stop it, prapper. It’s one of the most useful apps still, I think, if you’re into documentation.

Then again, he never implemented one feature an older version by some OEM had, and which I like: inverting the selection (i.e. to blur the NON-selected area).

I’ve been using IDAImageEditor Portable 3.0 Development Test 1 and quite like WinSnap (shareware, also available as portable version) but often come back to PicPick.

Oh well. One last update then, and see how long it stays …

Try 3.x

Just a note to see if anyone is interested in giving 3.x a try to see if it includes all the crudware?

EDIT: After a quick install it appears the installer no longer includes tool bars. The developer has moved to a free for personal use and license for commercial use model.

Anyone?

Can someone please pick this up? I had a look at the latest version, and it's even nicer than the version I have on my stick. This is a *really* useful application, one of my most used tools on my stick.

Development of your outdated version

I would like to know if you want to continue the development of PicPick? Reason for this query of mine is, that I myself would like to develop an own portable version of PicPick.

personal decision

Is this only a personal decision? Or exist here a problem with the developer of PicPick, who perhaps denied the permission to develop such a portable version (it's only Freeware)?

I just got tired

I just got tired of trying to keep up with all the changes. It was only ever an online installer anyway so it didn't need anyone's permission although you may get an objection if you pick it up (read the thread).

Just do it, I say!
