PortableApps.com Installer 3.0 Pre-Release 1 (and Google Chrome Portable installer)

We've just posted a major update to the PortableApps.com Installer as a pre-release test. Since there are so many code changes, we wanted to give it a little bit of a shakedown before releasing it. If all goes according to plan, it will be posted tomorrow along with the announcement of PortableApps.com Format 3.0.

Download PortableApps.com Installer 3.0 Pre-Release 1 [2MB download / 7MB installed]
MD5: 495ea94a31d4edced5cc7b3749c1041d

The notable new features include:

  • Online installers now download before performing any action on upgrades. On a download failure, existing install is untouched for upgrades, no partial install is done for new installs.
  • 2TB+ drives supported
  • USERPROFILE\PortableApps checked as automatic install location
  • EULA moved to AppInfo (install wizard will automatically move it)
  • RTF EULAs removed (error with suggested change to EULA.txt)
  • plugininstaller.ini moved to AppInfo (install wizard will automatically move it)
  • license agreement page switched from check box to just clicking I Agree
  • Updated PortableApps.com branding and PortableApps.com Installer icon
  • added "Run AppName Portable" to the finish screen (when used sans platform as that finish screen isn't used by platform users. skipped for plugin installers.)
  • visual taskbar indication of installer building within Installer wizard on Windows 7 (useful for devs who build a lot of bigger installers in the background to know when they are done)
  • error on attempting to install to Program Files or Program Files (x86)
  • Support for 2nd copies of apps for advanced users when installed with the /COPYNUMBER=2 commandline option (more on this later)
  • Switched to current inetc plugin from our older custom one, fixing some issues with online installers
  • Updated to current NSIS unicode build
  • Ability to right-click on the taskbar and select "Close Window" to close an installer when finished and the installer wizard when finished

As a test, I've packaged up a Google Chrome Portable 18.0.1025.151 Test Release to allow folks to try out the new online installer features.

Please give everything a try and report back with any issues you find. Thanks!

PS - On a related note, please give your thoughts on File Assocations and Formats in the PortableApps.com Platform in this thread as well.

Looking good, my friend

Compiled Notepad2-mod, installed it. Glad to see the progress bar on the task bar button.

As far as I could tell, I'd say its a go.

Working as expected

GCP installs fine, and doesn't bork when there's no network connection, as expected.

Compiled & installed NSIS ANSI perfectly.

I was unable to try the copynumber= option, no matter what variation I used with GCP, it didn't want to install as a second copy. Probably just me not having the correct syntax, though, since it isn't documented yet.

destination

It needs to be used in combination with destination and the other auto switches used by the platform. It can't really be tested solo.

Hmmm

Both VirusTotal and Jotti say the installer is clean in all antivirus engines. And both VirusTotal and Jotti show math.dll as clean, too. Have you updated to the latest definitions?

Meaning of "deprecated"

RTF EULAs deprecated (error with suggested change to EULA.txt)

That's not deprecation. With deprecation the features still remain for the time being. This is removal. If it doesn't suport RTF EULAs at all then we should say so.

Fixed

Updated it to say removed. It was deprecated before (when anyone asked) although not advertised as such.

Is that still supported? I remember you once said it was deprecated too.

Still There

It's still there at the moment. I think we should ditch it, though. And 3.0 would be a good time to do that.

Question

How would Launch PortableApp checkbox work on suites like LibreOffice?

Main EXE

It'll launch the main EXE, LibreOfficePortable.exe, which brings up the ability to select a new document or open an existing one.

Makes Sense

That makes sense. Thanks. I'm so used to going directly to Writer from the Menu that I forgot about the Welcome dialog

Custom Install Folders

Since we're going to a new version of the specification, I think that this is the time to add support for passing custom installation folders through command-line, to make PortableApps Updater able to update applications installed in folders different of the default ones...

Yes and No

We're adding in the ability to have additional copies of apps. But we won't be adding in the ability to randomly rename folders.

stupid question, but here it goes anyways...

When this comes out of prerelease and replaces the current installer, do all the portableapps (either supported by PA or in beta) have to be updated?
Let's say a user supports 10 apps, does he have to update all the installers and reupload?
Will it make the exe's more compact of will the installation go faster?

Yes, I set the working directory!

John has said that all

John has said that all official packages will be updated.

Beta releases I doubt will have any such restriction, but as per the format spec an app will need to use the most up-to-date installer to be released officially. So it will be up to the individual dev as to whether a beta test will be updated or not.

For the six or seven beta tests I have developed personally I doubt I will bother updating unless/until they are considered for official release, or there is an update to the app (but most of mine have slow release cycles).

Beta

You're fine leaving beta apps as is as the new format and installer release will not affect their functionality. Other than the ability to install through the platform onto a drive larger than 2TB.
