[SUSPENDED - UPDATE TO BASE APP NEEDED] LinCity-NG Portable 2.0 Development Test 1

Application: LinCity-NG
License: Open Source
Category: Games
Description: LinCity-NG is a city simulation game. It is a polished and improved version of the classic LinCity game. In the game, you are required to build and maintain a city. You can win the game either by building a sustainable economy or by evacuating all citizens with spaceships.

: This development work has been taken forward to build on an earlier release by kai.inouye, which is no longer being maintained (see - https://portableapps.com/node/16066 )

DEVELOPMENT SUSPENDED UNTIL RELEASE OF VERSION 2.1 OF THE BASE APPLICATION - REPORTED BUGS IN WINDOWS BUILD OF VERSION 2.0 (http://lincity-ng.berlios.de/wiki/index.php/TODO_for_2.1)

Release Notes:

Development Test 1 (2011-03-23): Initial release

  • There is an ackowledged bug in the base application which prevents it from starting up if the resolution of your monitor is less than that in the startup configuration file. I have edited this file to set the default start-up resolution to 1024x600 (a common resolution for small screen laptops (Netbooks). That worked for me!

Application Crash

Sorry you experienced this.

I should be able to get access to a Win 7 x64 system, so will try to replicate your experience and see if I can find a ready solution.

LinCity-NG 2.0 Crashes

I've been checking the LinCity website again and found this:

http://lincity-ng.berlios.de/wiki/index.php/TODO_for_2.1

It looks like it's probably best to wait for the 2.1 update before I pick this up again, as crashes in the base application seem to have affected a wide range of Windows desktop users.

This is clearly not an issue that's linked with making the application portable, so I'll keep watching for the next update release before trying again.

LinCity-NG Update?

Unfortunately there's no positive news yet on an update. See - http://lincity-ng.berlios.de/wiki/index.php/TODO_for_2.1 - last updated on 27 January.

There is a message from a Windows user which suggests that, for installed versions, setting the .exe to "Compatibility with Windows 2000" made all errors go away; but I'm not aware of any way that this can be forced from within a PortableApps package. If anyone knows of a way of doing this, then I'll try again.

I can't see any progress on the base app at the moment. And the development of the portable version has been suspended for that reason (read the opening post).

But as mjashby seems to be inactive you may take over the development so others can play it as well. Blum

-edit-
small but substantial typo

Since the base app is

Since the base app is apparently never going to be updated, perhaps it's time for someone to make a "final" PortableApp version out of the last known-good base app release. There is precedent for this with Free Download Manager, which is frozen on PortableApps.com to the last open source release of that base app.
