Can portable apps be installed directly on your computer?

I know, probably a stupid question, but I work at a job that requires me to use either FF 12 or 13, and I'm having a very hard time with them. The Portable FF13 works great. I installed it onto my desktop, and it was working fine until I uninstalled the original FF13, then it just disappeared from the list of apps. I tried reinstalling it, and it said it reinstalled, but it isn't there.

If I need to create a virtual drive or something, I will. My portable device is a Passport, so sorta large to keep plugged in when I'm working on my lap. Don't have a thumb drive, and PLEASE don't tell me how cheap they are and how I should just buy one, because I'm so broke right now I'm only eating one meal a day.

Yes

You can install it directly onto your computer. It's recommended to either install it to C:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable or USERPROFILE\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable so the installer can find it for upgrades easier and so you can use it with the platform if you decide to add the platform later. You can also install it directly to your Desktop or My Documents if you'd like. In any of those situations, you can then create a shortcut to FirefoxPortable.exe on your desktop or Start Menu.

I have the platform

That's where I had it installed, in the platform on the desktop, and it just disappeared. Now when I try to install it via the platform, it says it's installed, but it isn't, and it isn't anywhere on my computer.

I'll try installing the platform to its own folder and see what happens. Evidently, it doesn't like my desktop.

Hidden

If you have it in the platform, might you have accidentally hidden the icon from the app list? Right-click on any other app icon and select Show Hidden Icons.

I don't have any other apps in the platform

Also, my bookmarks toolbar is not showing now. I tried restoring from the backups and from a saved html file, but they won't import.

One App Hidden

There is an issue with having only one app installed in the PA.c Platform and having it hidden. To show it again, close the platform, browse to your PortableApps\PortableApps.com\Data directory and open up your PortableAppsMenu.ini file. In there, you can see an AppsHidden section (if it is hidden). Just delete those lines. We'll have a way to re-show a single hidden app shortly.

I think something else is seriously wrong.

When I installed the platform, it didn't create a PortableApps folder, I created it. Now I installed Audacity to the platform and also reinstalled FF via the platform, but Audacity doesn't show in the Portable Apps folder, just the other version of FF I installed directly there. Maybe I got a corrupt installer for the platform.

Anyway, that doesn't change the fact that I can't import the html bookmarks backup file into any version of FF portable, and when I copy my old profile info into it, it doesn't recognize the bookmarks. I'm tired of fighting with this. I'm just going to try to delete it all from the system and try again with a new installer.
