GIMP has a scanner function just go to File->Create->Scanner/Camera and it should work.

Yes.. But it did not work for my camera. I can not see the camera on the source list... VLC portable can get the camera as source...
(I will try it with my scanner too, if I will plug in it)
respectively how it is reading the usb devices.
Note that usb-camera and usb-scanner are two different devices and camera will be accepted as picture or movie camera device, while scanner will be accepted by the twain driver as device for scanning documents.
Therefore camera will likely not be in sources list for scanning, while scanner will likely not be in source list of cameras.
There might exist exceptions and mixture of all, as not all usb devices report their usb class properly.

Now after long Time I do have found and work with NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner 2)

The portable download extract to an folder and put this into the PortableApps as all the other applikations.
