hi all
i got a question for the developers.
i've downloaded several different ports of the same program, which have been ported by different people. so, same program, different porters, alas different ports.
now, they all halt on initiate.
remembering that this ported program used to work a couple of months ago (any port i downloaded) and now none of any diferent ports work, what can i do to understand where the problem lies? touphy
i've tried clearing the registry, changing installation folders and i dont recall updating windows and even if i did, is it possible that all different ported 'versions' would crash?
any help would be appretiated.

portable app crash
Are you using them all from an external drive? If so, it could be a port issue. Or it could be a drive corruption issue (either internal or external). It could also be that they leave something behind. Or something on the main PC's configuration changed that is now incompatible with the base app itself.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
base app? i dont know what that is. do you mean that all the different ports would be ported used the same 'system'?
im running the program from my hard drive, no usb sticks.
regarding leaving i'll check folders and registry
thanks

You said you were using different packages by different authors of the same app. I mean the base application, not the way it was packaged. So if it's 7-Zip packaged in different ways by different people, something could have been installed on the PC that is incompatible with 7-Zip, so 7-Zip can no longer run regardless of how it is packaged.
It's also possible that your PC itself has corruption on the hard drive or a virus/malware that is interfering. This is more likely if the base app we're talking about is a pirated version of Photoshop or something rather than a legitimate portable app (note that I'm not implying that that's what you're doing, just exploring all possibilities).

ah. well the non portable version used to work fine. and so did any portable package. i rarely use the program, so just downloaded any package when i needed it.
ill look for files and registry entries, and run anti-virus/malware scanners, but still, the app used to work. the only thing i can think that is ruining it is some other little file from something else, program or windows, but hat's weird that an pp would crash due to a file that should not be able to interfere..
and the pc hard drive corruption..i dont understand that. you mean a bad sector??

There are a few things that can cause conflicts on PCs. GIMP used to have an issue with an old file being in the System directory. And there was no way around it other than renaming the file. If the file was there with a specific name, GIMP would crash. Local, portable, didn't matter. Try the local version, then you know for sure if that is the case.
And yes, I meant bad sectors or logical errors. I've seen hard drives corrupt apps before.

the app works now.
it might have been a couple of files.
quite a few, actually. deleted them all
also cleared a few registry entries but mostly stuff like open withs
no viruses. and i hope theres no bad sectores.

It would help us solve the problem if you indicated what app you're having problems with, as well as the full path that it's installed to.
got it working.
