[Closed] Unknown file type / Can not load nor save any other file type than xcf (Gimp Portable 2.8.2 on Win 7 x64)

Hello,

My problem :
My Portable Gimp can not load nor save any other file type than xcf. See details below:

  • Loading another format than xcf
    - When I do : file -> open -> (change filter to all files) select a file (for example png/jpg): I get a popup message saying "Unknown file type"
    - When I drag and drop a png/jpg file into gimp: nothing happens
  • Saving a xcf file into another format
    - When I do : file -> save as -> Select File Type (By Extension) : I only get 2 lines "By Extension" and "GIMP XCF Image"

My computer :

  • Harware : Lenovo T420s with an Intel Core i7 (2640M @2.8GHz)
  • OS : Win 7 Pro SP1 64bits (in French)
  • Zonealarm Free Antivirus + Firewall (10.2.047.000) is running
  • Portable Gimp 2.8.2. Full Path to the install :
    D:\Régis\Apps\PortableGIMP-2.8.2\GIMPPortable.exe
  • Portable Gimp 2.8.0. Full Path to the install :
    D:\Régis\Apps\PortableGIMP-2.8.0\GIMPPortable.exe

When I realized I had a problem with the 2.8.0, I installed 2.8.2.

Disable Zone Alarm

Could you please try temporarily disabling Zone Alarm and then trying it? Some antivirus products interfere with GIMP's ability to access its plugins (and all file types are a form of plugin). It affects both local and portable GIMP and was an issue with the antivirus product the only other time we encountered this.

Install

Please try a local install of GIMP, just temporarily, to ensure it is not something else in your system interfering. 9 times out of 10, it is something on the local system interfering with GIMP's ability to communicate with its plugins. GIMP Portable itself works just fine on Windows 7 x64 with all file types as I'm using it right now, so we need to figure out what's up in your situation and hopefully how to fix it.

Also, for saving, you can only save as XCF. If you want a JPG, PNG, etc, you use Export.

Special Character in Path - Workaround !

I've just had an idea : what if the problem comes from the folder path ?
I decided to test it . I moved the folder from
D:\Régis\Apps\PortableGIMP-2.8.2\
to
D:\Regis\Apps\PortableGIMP-2.8.2
(not Régis but Regis) and... terrific, it works ! I can load and save (export) other extension than xcf. Smile

Could it be possible to fix this in the next release ?

By the way, it takes way much longer to load all modules than none Biggrin

Hope this will help other users

Several Apps

Several apps will have issues with non-ANSI characters in the path, not just GIMP. Our tools like the PortableApps.com Launcher and Installer will handle them just fine, but the apps themselves sometimes can't. Generally, there is no workaround. So, it's best not to install to paths with non-ANSI characters.

Not so portable

I appreciate this website, these portable apps and your work.

I don't know what apps you are talking about. I use 10 of Portable Apps (see below), and none of them seems to have any issue. Too bad that Gimp is not so portable... Wink

--- D:\Régis\Apps ---
Thunderbird
7Zip
FilezZilla
FireFox
KeePass
Skype
TeamViewer
TrueCrypt
Windirstat
WinMd5Sum

Not The Definition

The definition of portable doesn't mean you can install them wherever you want. You can't install them to Program Files as several apps switch to local mode and UAC on Windows prevents most from properly running, several apps like Google Chrome won't work from network drives using UNC paths, and several apps don't like non-ANSI characters in the paths.

It's best to install your apps to a X:\PortableApps directory. You'll have no issues from there and installers will automatically detect your existing location for upgrades and new install. And it'll work well if/when you add the PortableApps.com Platform to fully manage your apps later.
