(ERROR: Reget Error)

That's what comes up everytime i try to install Google Chrome Portable, EVERYTIME!

Is there anyway to fix this? I think its because its a different installer than Firefox portable, is there anyway of making the chrome portable, so you download the full thing? instead of just downloading the installer?

Blocked

Most likely you are blocked from downloading from Google's Chrome download server in your current location (or you have a horrible internet connection that keeps disconnecting). It's a live/separate download for licensing reasons (any copy of Chrome for portable use that bundles it directly is doing so illegally and we only do legal software here). Your best bet is to do it at another location (home for instance) that doesn't have it blocked. In the next platform release, it'll automatically detect this situation and prevent it from resulting in a 1/2 installed app.

Illegal

Distribution in this method is illegal and not permitted in our forums. We operate exclusively with legal software here.

You can manually download the current Google Chrome Stable bits from here. Place that chrome_installer.exe in the same directory as GoogleChromePortable_11.0.696.65_online.paf.exe and it'll use it.

same error

I tried this with the latest version of chrome portable but it seems to be failing. GoogleChromePortable_25.0.1364.172_online.paf.exe.

Does that method still work and is that linke for the latest Google Chrome Stable bits still valid?

Thanks.

or you could try SRWare Iron which is Google Chrome less a bit

https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/iron_portable

looking at the download size of Iron Portable, it doesn't use an online installer and Iron seems to be pretty much Google Chrome.

I think anything you want do in/with Google Chrome Portable you should be able to do with Iron Portable?

Reget error

I am suddenly getting this error too. I cannot update or even make a fresh install of Google Chrome because of it. It also prevents me updating Iron.

All apps have installed and updated without issues before so I do not believe the problem lies with my system or ISP.

Just Those?

Is it just those two apps? Can you update others? Where are you doing this (home, work, school, net cafe, etc)?

Reget error

Sorry not to have got back sooner - I was waiting for an update to the launcher, hoping this would solve the problem. It didn't.

I updated the launcher this morning and ran the update scan. This showed 3 items ready: Google Chrome, Iron and Notepad++. I ran the update for Notepad++ first and this completed normally, as all other apps always do except for Chrome and Iron. When I tried running these updates, both failed with the reget error message.

I am running on a Toshiba laptop with XP installed, working at home. My ISP is Zen.

As far as I can tell (because this depends on what updates are available), the problems is limited to these two apps. Moreover, they cannot be updated "manually" either. (That is, by downloading the app file and running it by double-clicking on it.) The same problem occurs.

Manually

You mean you can't download them from the browser? Chrome is a 'live' installer, so it downloads regular Chrome as part of the install. Iron is a fully packaged installer which you download entirely through the browser. When you manually download Iron through your browser and it fails, what happens?

Reget

Rather than get bogged down explaining what I meant, let me explain what the situation now is.

There are two ways to update a PortableApps app: 1. through the launcher when this displays a window announcing that updates are available; 2. by downloading the current version of the app from the PortableApps (and SourceForge) site and running this by clicking on it.

I find that in the case of Google Chrome Portable and Iron Portable, method 1. produces a reget error (i.e. I cannot complete the update).

For these two apps, method 2. now succeeds and running local versions of the paf files results in the apps being correctly updated.

Thus, though the mysterious "reget problem" has not been solved, I can at least update the two apps. So unless method 2. starts failing again, I will be satisfied with things as they are.

Of course, should you manage to diagnose and cure the reget problem I shall be interested to know this.

Reget (still)

Just to let you know that with the latest update of Google Chrome Portable, both methods of installing (within the PortableApps platform or using XP's install) fail with a reget error message.

Together with this morning's update to Chrome was one for WinSCP. The latter updated normally within the platform. It's only Chrome and Iron that cause this problem.

Anything Else Running

As the problem is definitely on your end at this point, is there anything else running on your machine that could be interfering (antivirus or software firewall)? Have you tried it using a different ISP from a different location?

Reget error

I have Kaspersky, that's all. It's never given this problem before.

I haven't tried a different ISP.

Fortunately, everything else works and I only keep Chrome and Iron for completeness because, pace their fans, they are pretty poor browsers.

If I want a portable Chrome-alike, there's always Comodo Dragon.

BTW I do have Google Chrome for Windows installed and this works and updates normally.

Iron

Is it happening with Iron, too? Iron is NOT a live installer so is just a single download from SourceForge. And have you tried it with Kaspersky disabled once?
