can I update it with the Updater, or does it only update Final releases ?

How does ZDoom differ from GZDoom?
PortableApps.com Advocate
Hi, ...
Description: GZDoom is a Doom source port based on ZDoom. It features an OpenGL renderer and lots of new features including 3D floors, dynamic lights, Quake2/Unreal style skyboxes and true color texture/model support. It also contains many bug fixes not present in the most recent ZDoom versions.
I hope it help, ...

So then shouldn't we just stick with GZDoom? It seems kind of redundant to me to have multiple incarnations of Doom roaming around this site.
I'm guessing that ZDoom is closer to the original and so will run on hardware that closely matches the original, whereas the new gangled GZDoom requires more modern hardware? Is that along the right track?
How many Dooms does one person need? Sorry if that's blasphemous to anyone!
Can I update this using the Updater in the Beta5 ? or should I check this page ?
Sometimes making love is just not enough, you have to step it up!
You'll need to check this page. The updater manages official releases only as there are simply too many variables to support development tests. You can subscribe to the thread though this will mean you'll be notified every time there is a new comment.

I think it's ready for release, I promote this as stable, very stable.
Save and Load game works fine, and when you die you automatically get back to your last saved point.

Thanks for testing and for your enthusiastic vote for DOOM
I'm a HUGE doom nut. I have all the games and about 3 gigs of wad files i accumulated over the years. I've been using zdoom 2.3.1 for about a year now with no problems. I've tested gzdoom and while it's a smoother engine,i couldn't play my pwad files. So i will go ahead and test this puppy and post back tomorrow.
i tested the launcher on beta 2.0.4 and 2.0.5 platforms. The url in the ini files doesn't seem to exist online anymore. I tested the link and i get a 404 error code saying it cannot be located. It's supposed to download the shareware doom board that the launcher is supposed to run but i cant download it. It's of no consequence since i already own the master iwad files so i just threw them into the folder. At first it upgraded my existing install and disabled my launcher in the process. since i had a program conflict,i erased it and did a clean install.(durr!) It works just fine except, like gzdoom,i can't access the pwads from the main interface (which sucks because i have a whole gig of pwad files)...anyway it's a wonderfull engine! It has the smoothest frame rate i've ever seen, the graphics are brilliant, and all my codes work flawlessly. You may want to look at the url in the ini file where it's supposed to download the shareware iwad. It didn't work for me,but i could be mistaken. If it's a consistent problem, you may want to redirect the ini to download from another source. I hope this little report helps someone. I love doom!!
It looks like that mirror isn't working anymore. I'll change it to another one.
I'm not sure what you mean by "from the main interface" but there *is* a problem loading PWADs from the command line (I left one of the initial values out of the default INI by mistake) so thanks for testing and spotting that. I'll have a fix up today for both issues.
I'll do GZDoom as well.
See release notes for changes.
do I install over, or do a clean install ?
Sometimes making love is just not enough, you have to step it up!
So far the new url download source works and the game runs flawlessly. I just have one question and maybe i'm missing something but how does one access the pwad section? i looked everywhere and i just cannot find it. I did a comparison between 2.3.1 and 2.4.1 and i noticed that both gzdoom & zdoom have been reprogrammed as seperate entities and the dlauncher has been discarded. 2.3.1 had the older versions of both gzdoom & zdoom but the ini is not configured to make them run properly. It looks like the dlauncher is the primary interface instead (meaning the main menu screen when you want to play it) I'm thinking that perhaps there's a way to incorporate 2.4.1 with the pwad functionality of the dlauncher and thus giving access to both the main iwad section and the pwad section on the main menu screen of 2.4.1. I'm not sure if there are many more lunatics like myself that actually have such a large library of pwads for doom so it may be too much work to put in that much effort for a free game just so ppl can access the expansion packs. The game without the pwad expansion packs work just fine as is. It downloads from the new url,and it does have extra options that were not on the older versions. I would love to incorporate the pwads with 2.4.1 easily so i will tinker with it and post on here when i have results. Overall the quality is excellent! Well done!
OK, now I'm following. You need to try the included ZDL launcher. Copy "ZDoomPortable\Other\Source\ZDoomPortable.ini" to the main ZDoomPortable folder (so it's next to ZDoomPortable.exe) and open it up. Change ZDL=false to true, save and launch ZDoom Portable. Things should look a bit more familiar now (have a look at help.html for some extra info). Great for saving and loading different configurations too.
Or you can load PWADs just using the same INI file and editing the AdditionalParameters line, for example:
This is what I fixed in this latest version but bear in mind, if ZDL=true then all AdditionalParameters are sent to ZDL instead of ZDoom. Probably not what you want so clear them out first.
Re: install. The reason I recommend a clean install is to enable the line in zdoom.ini that forces ZDoom to scan the App\PWADS folder (which is needed for "AdditionalParameters=-file *****.WAD" to work) but you can just add it manually if you prefer (I know, I should have done some custom upgrade code):
ZDoomPortable\Data\settings\zdoom.ini -
Thanks to everyone for testing and giving this a workout. Any more questions, just ask away.
P.S. All this goes for GZDoom too, development of which seems to have stalled for the moment.
just do a clean install. when i installed it, 2.4.1 overrode the original game and since its programmed differently,it caused problems. What i do is a clean install on a separate flash drive i use for testing programs. I personally prefer the 2.3.1 because i can access my expansion packs with the dlauncher. However if you don't happen to have a large library of pwads, then 2.4.1 is much better for standard game play. I use both so you know i'm having a field day over here! :D:P
What should I do (Exactly) to play the full version ?
what files do I need and what's the difference between WAD, iWAD, pWAD and WTF?
I know these files includes the levels and such.
please, I would appreciate exact steps to play DOOM1 and DOOM2.
Sometimes making love is just not enough, you have to step it up!
OK, first of all, you can play all the IWADs and PWADs with ZDoom Portable 2.4.1.
I hope I'm not just repeating what darkness2fall said but here goes -
Although the DOOM "engine" is open source, the actual games are still copyrighted. The term WAD refers to either IWAD or PWAD. IWADs (Internal WADs) contain the main data and it's these that you need to play the full games. PWADs (Patch WADs) are (mostly) unofficial files that replace levels and episodes (or sometimes the whole game) but you have to have the IWAD to use a PWAD (each PWAD is made for a specific IWAD).
I try to outline some of this stuff in help.html but if you have a look at the IWAD page on the ZDoom Wiki it tells you the exact files you need and how to get them ("Obtaining IWADs" at the bottom). It can all be done legally and it's very cheap (although I haven't personally used either of those stores).
Ultimate DOOM - DOOM.WAD
DOOM II - DOOM2.WAD
Final DOOM - PLUTONIA.WAD & TNT.WAD
These are the official DOOM games. Put them in App\IWADS and ZDoom will ask you which one you want to play when you start it up. Then download some PWADs and put them in App\PWADS, use ZDL to manage them all or load them via the command line (see above). Again, more info and links in help.html.
The Doom Wiki is also a huge source of information.
i dont know what version you're using but 2.4.1 will only play the iwads. iwad files are the original files you need to make the game run. Currently there are 2 types of iwad file groups. One group is the proprietary ones that come with the ORIGINAL doom game. The second are open source iwads created by the doom community. Simply stated they are the key files you need to play the game. The pwad files are open source expansion boards for doom that are also created by the doom community. I have both sets of iwads and i have the pwad library when i was a member of the doom community. The game engine i use for the pwads is zdoom 2.3.1. Just search this website to find it. highlight doom2 in the iwad tab dialog box, then click on the pwad tab,in the pwad dialog box, check off the board you want to play. you can only check off one at a time. If you don't the launcher reverts to the original doom2 iwad. The doom community is an open source network of wad files that are free. If you want to find the community, just do a google search. I'm really grateful to both the original author of the dlauncher and prapper for the creation and maintainence of doom portable. i never had doom for a flash drive before and now i can play doom anywhere thanx to the hard work of the project managers.
Thanx for the ini tip! i can access all the iwad and pwad files. it's different than 2.3.1 but once i get used to the new format,i'll be fine. It even had new options that i didnt have in the old one. For example when i was playing dark hour,i had doom 1 highlighted and it gave me a mix of the 2 game sprites(storm troopers & demons). i got doom 2 on there and it works just fine. It saves settings and its very clean! you guys rock well!!

Hi, ...
SaveGame from v2.4.1, dont work inside v2.5.0 Development Test 1.
Is this normal ?
Also,
Did i have to re-play the game from the start, after each, ZDoom portable apps update, because it seem to have incompatibility savegame file ?
You're right, I never thought to check that to be honest. It's an issue with the app rather than the portable packaging though so I can't really do anything about it. Has this happened before?
Unfortunately this is rather normal, so if you're in the middle of a playthrough it's recommended to hold off on updating until you're finished. Then you can play through it again, on an updated engine!
But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I downloaded this the other day and the updated engine is fantastic! The zdl launcher works better than ever & it's awesome with all the pwads i have. I love how well it works with the mods so that i dont have to write a single line of code! I created my file structure and the zdl launcher takes care of the rest! It writes its own ini files for each computer i play this on,and it remembers the settings! I'm using gzdoom as the source port & there is absolutely no pixelation, the dynamic lighting is better, etc. I am truly impressed with the quality of your work and i really hope you continue with your efforts. YOU ROCK WELL!

It seems like the http mirror you are using to download the doom shareware wad is not working.

Hey there, Just wanted to say this is freaking awesome. Just wondering, when you go to add Iwads into ZDL, is it OK to add them as
..\..\Data\iwads\doom2.wad
?Also, ZDL has been slightly updated since 3.1a, found here > http://update.vectec.net/ The readme and stuff can be found there. Or, you can read here for more info and source > https://github.com/qbasicer/qzdl
I have this App on my External Drive, and it works wonders on all 3 PC's at my house. Love it Keep up the great work
