Application: D-Fend Reloaded
Category: Games
Description: From the publisher's website:
Running DOS games has never been easier...
D-Fend Reloaded is a graphical environment for DOSBox. DOSBox emulates a complete computer including the DOS commandline and allows to run nearly all old DOS based games on modern hardware with any of the newer Windows versions.
With DOSBox there is no need to worry about memory managers or free conventional RAM, but the setup of DOSBox is still a bit complicated. The configuration of DOSBox via textbased setup files might be difficult for beginners. D-Fend Reloaded may help and create these files for you. Additionally the D-Fend Reloaded installation package contains DOSBox (including all language files currently available), so there is only one installation to be run and no need to link D-Fend Reloaded with DOSBox manually.
Differences between D-Fend and D-Fend Reloaded
In some way D-Fend Reloaded is a successor of the discontinued software D-Fend. Both environments look alike and D-Fend Reloaded contains all the features of D-Fend. Even the D-Fend config files are compatible with the current program. However, unlike D-Fend, D-Fend Reloaded is open source.
The development objective for D-Fend Reloaded was (besides 100% D-Fend compability) to make the program operation more simple with respect to DOSBox beginners. Simultaneously more features for administration and configuration became available.

(MD5: 0e61bee7fafb520e8c68a4bde688c3e9)
Note: This will not be updated from here on out because the original developer has created a 99% accurate PAF installer. This can be found on the official page, also linked here.
Note: For full functionality, please download DOSBox Portable because the internally bundled version has been removed. ScummVM Portable can also be used with D-Fend Reloaded. In order for both DOSBox and ScummVM to work, they need to be in the same root folder as D-Fend Reloaded.

it compatible with PortableApps.com specification?
the profile save on data folder?
thanks,
Tal.
I originally did this app a while ago when I was experimenting with appbuilding. So as of right now, it's not even close to being ready, including improper folder setup. Hopefully, I can get back to this at some point and fix the inconsistencies.
Slight update: You can actually check out the "official" portable version as well, which is on the official site. It's not quite correct either, but maybe the original developer will make the changes necessary; who knows. Either way, I'll try to get back to this at some point.
Actual update: I just updated D-Fend to the newest version and added a few more things to make it more correct. Check the readme on the SourceForge site for details.
I talk with the D-Fend creator (Alexander). He is very stubborn person.
He not willing to change his program for stand with portableapps.com specifications. He say that it will be Inconsistent with it older program.
I suggest for him that the portable program will read from both places (Data and the old place) and will save only at Data. in the beginning he say it not possible, then he say it very hard. After a long time from the last time i talk with him, I had an Idea. to add a switch like -Data to the program, that will save profile to Data folder. but i didn't suggest it to him.
I hope you will do better than I am.
Thanks,
Tal.
Check out the new version. I think I was able to circumvent the need for any special switches or anything like that.
When i start D-Fend, it was looking for Dropbox in C:\program files and ect ...
Can you tell it to search first in the same directory for portable dropbox?
Thanks,
Tal.
I'm not sure what you mean by that it's looking for Dropbox. I'll have to have someone check that if I can't figure out what the problem is. Do you mean DOSBox? If so, then that means you haven't installed DOSBox Portable, which is a prerequisite for this program (since D-Fend is just a pretty GUI for DOSBox). I intentionally took out the bundled DOSBox because it was extra bloat. I hope this helps you.
when it install the first time, it start searching Dosbox on your program files.
In the Start, I install it in the folder without Dosbox.
When it start looking for, I stop the search and close D-Fend.
When I add dosbox portable as it should, I run again D-Fend,
and it continue to look Dosbox at program files, instead looking
the portable dosbox first.
Thansk,
Tal.
Uninstall both portable apps, then install DOSBox Portable first, then D-Fend Reloaded Portable. This should fix it. If not, I'll try to reproduce the steps and see what's not working.
but it more logical to search the dropbox portable after every lunch, even it not found it in the last one.
Thanks for your time.
I will love to see D-Fend as official portableapps.com. it very good program.
Tal.
D-Fend Reloaded 1.3.4
can you update?
Thanks,
Tal.
I'll be updating it later tonight.
Updated to 1.3.4 Dev Test 1. See release notes for details.
Thank You for your hard work.

Updated: 1.3.5 Dev Test 1 (file not at the correct place)
-DFendReloadedPortable
--- App (directory)
--- Data (directory)
--- Other (directory)
--- DFendReloadedPortable . exe (file)
--- help . html (file)
--- music (file)
i have a zero bytes file that have the name "music".
it even do that with a completly new install of your "DFendReloadedPortable_1.3.5_Dev_Test_1_English . paf . exe", installation.
To reproduce that problem = open the "DFendReloadedPortable . exe" portable software, after wait some seconds, and after close the "FendReloadedPortable . exe" software, after go to the directory "DFendReloadedPortable" and you will see a file that have the name "music" with no filename extention, and that file have zero bytes.
Please verify at your side.
This is a problem that is somehow caused by the launcher. It appears in a few of my apps and I have zero clue as to why or how it does. The file is harmless and isn't used by D-Fend or any of the applications for that matter.
Edit :
i try to compile the launcher.
i have decompressed "DFendReloadedPortable_1.3.5_Dev_Test_1_English.paf.exe", after i have erased the "DFendReloadedPortable . exe" file in the root. After i have compiled the launcher. Then see below, the result, ...
your "DFendReloadedPortable . exe " launcher file 265k, my file 260k.
P.S. did you use the v2.2 of PortableApps.comLauncher ?
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/PortableApps.comLauncher_2...
I'm using the most recent launcher with the only functional changes pertaining to using the JDK (which should not affect anything else).
"AppInfo . ini"
Must be, ...
It is intentional that the package version is less than the actual version. This was explained to me by Gord way back when I was getting started with BlueJ in that if it ever gets a full release, the PackageVersion can be updated and it can then be pushed out via the automatic updater. You will notice that all of my apps follow this.
This isn't caused by PAL, otherwise the same file would appear with most of the apps we provide, as the majority use PAL. There must be something on your system specifically causing that file to be in the packages.
Updated to 1.3.6 Dev Test 1. See release notes for details.
[Please remove this]
Instead of trying to take over a supported and regularly updated development test, why not provide feedback here on how the package in this thread could be better? There is absolutely no reason to need two separate and recent packages of the same app.
Please also tell us how your version is any more stable? All I can see you've done is renamed some directories and bundled DosBox (which I personally think is unnecessary, since DosBox an official app here).
And if you do still feel the need to provide a separate package of the app, please change the AppId. This will prevent problems from someone installing both your and darksabre's versions unknowingly to the same path, and then potentially having issues from the two packages' incompatibilities.
@John T. Haller
i cant re-edit my upper post.
@winterblood
Please note that i have try at my side to made, the portable version of "DFendReloadedPortable_1.3.6_Dev_Test_1_English" better.

The files and directorys structures, need like "VirtualHD", not "vhd" it mean the original name. Even "D-Fend Reloaded programmor", ask to keep the directorys names not changed, and follow the uppercase and lowercase letter...
The third change is the only one that I can see the value in changing as of right now. The first isn't necessary, and the second I can probably fix by putting Capture back in the app folder and keeping it between updates. Thank you for the feedback.
Updated to 1.4.0 Dev Test 1. Please note that some folder names have changed, as suggested by sst. See release notes for details.

This will made the D-FendReloadedPortable installer, "Multilingual". You will have to rebuild the installer.
When the folders changed over, I missed the backslashes. Also, I forgot to change the default in AppInfo. Once my backlog of other apps is done, I will cycle back through and update the leftovers, this among them.
Can you update to 1.4.4 and release it as final application? there seems there will not be update anymore.
