This release has been outdated by an updated release:
PortableApps.com Platform 1.1 Beta 4
I've posted a package of Portable Apps Menu 1.0.2 Beta 3. I'm calling it a pre-release until I can get some folks to verify that it introduces no new bugs over the 1.0.2 Beta 2 release.
New in this version:
GPL Issue Resolved - The GPL issues mentioned before around certain icons have been resolved by moving those icons outside of the compiled binary. (GPLed code can't be combined with Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike licensed objects, but it can be distributed alongside them).
Initial Theming Bits Added - The precursors of the theming engine have been added. This will allow folks interested in trying out the theming abilities to start working on things. Keep in mind that the theme file format and structure hasn't been finalized yet. I've put together an example theme so you can see how it works. Just download the file ThemeExample.zip and extract it to the PortableAppsMenu\App\DefaultData\Theme directory (after installing this new Menu, of course... and backing up your original files). It's just a quick example of what will be possible... I went with a basic black for the folks that may want to use it with Vista or a dark Windows theme (like me). Here's a screenshot of the theme in action.
Initial Localization Bits Added - I added some quick code to show what will be possible with the localization system I'd mentioned earlier, too. By placing a test.locale file in the same directory as PortableAppsMenu.exe, you can get a feel for how the locale system will work. I've posted two examples to get people started, too: test.english-us.locale (handy for starting a new localization to contribute to the project), test.swedish.locale (contributed by Johan, our Swedish translation lead). Just save them to the same directory as PortableAppsMenu.exe and rename them to test.locale. Here's a screenshot of the Swedish locale file in action.
Download Portable Apps Menu 1.0.2 Beta 3 (Pre-Release 2) and extract the files to your existing PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu directory to try it out
Download Portable Apps Menu 1.0.2 Beta 3 (Pre-Release 2) Source - This is a Borland Delphi 2006 Project fileset. It should contain all the necessary files to compile and run. If any Delphi folks could verify this, it would be appreciated.
That's it for now. This should get us back on track to releasing menu updates monthly (at a minimum) and be able to start adding some of the most popular feature requests.
UPDATE - Pre-Release 2 fixes the issue with the menu missing your last app.
Regards,
John
I'll try compiling with Delphi 2005.
Also, I'll get started on a green theme and a blue theme.
I did use the black Royale, but there's no good matching FF theme, so I used the blue/orange one (RoyaleFour) with the FF theme Planet Mir.

That's really odd. It's the same source I compiled the released EXE from and the same one I have in the screenshots. Let me take a look at what's going on.
Oh, actually, I just realized you were doing Delphi 2005. I've checked things over and it apparently will only work with 2006.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I just compiled correctly PAM with BDS2006. I will check pam's source later. Thank you John.
Ah, I found some memory leak with FastMM (I use it us memory manager in my softwares and to find memory leak):
--------------------------------2007/1/5 17:30:55--------------------------------
This application has leaked memory. The small block leaks are (excluding expected leaks registered by pointer):
45 - 60 bytes: TStringList x 1
61 - 76 bytes: Unknown x 1
93 - 108 bytes: String x 3
125 - 140 bytes: String x 2
Undeclared indentifier trayiconMenu
TrayiconMenu is new component of Delphi 2006. It isn't in previous version of delphi 2006, like 2005.
Latest thing: Can I help to translate PAM in italian?
I haven't used FastMM before. Does it provide any more detail on where the leaks are?
Sure thing on translations. It's being done entirely in .locale files (glorified INI files). I posted an example English one as part of this release. This is just the first set of strings for folks to test. The full .locale format is being completed. But if you start with that, you can drop it in the PAM directory as test.locale and have the Menu in Italian today.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
http://www.salvadorsoftware.com/download/PortableAppsMenu_MemoryManager_...
This is complete log of FastMM. Anyway memory leak are in procedure SetupButtons:
- tstrlstApplications:= TStringList.Create; (line 840)
- tstrlstApplications.Add(strCurrentAppName+'='+strCurrentAppPath); (line 933)
For translation, I'm wait full .locale to make italian translation.
Not fully understanding what to do to change the locale file, I've read all of this thred I think and can't figure it out? I save it in Portable/PortableAppsMenu/ with the portableappsmenu.exe, as test.launguage.locale? Do I have to recompile anything?:S
You just have to rename it to "test.locale".

What program should I use to make my themes?
As stated in the initial post, the theme format isn't fully defined yet. It's just a series of three images. You can use PhotoShop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, MS Paint or anything else to create your own images to use as a theme.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Hey all you PortableAppers,
I worked out a theme that I call "Wonders of Nature". I designed it for those who are concerned about space on their drive. you can get it from (and view it from):
http://im.forumco.com/userfiles/scoutconnor/background.jpg
just save as John instructed
Please post feedback in the "PortableApps Themes" Thread so I can improve it
That theme is a bit odd. Maybe you could make one with a background of JUST leaves. it would look nicer. But the theme is a good start.

Found a possible bug, for some reason Sudoku doesnt show up on the menu, replace PortableAppsMenu with the standard one and its back.
What's your layout and where are all the files? I have Sudoku Portable showing up just fine for me. What OS, etc?
WAIT - I figured it out... the last icon isn't showing up... I'll report in a few.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I have the Sudoku program on my menu. The menu even has the black theme on it. And I see the icon for Sudoku. Maybe you can only see it on XP...

Same problem with app not showing in menu.
For me it is trillian.exe
Also replaced portablemenu.exe with 1.0.1.2 version and it appears in the menu.

You said it's the same code already used.
Does that mean the current PAM is faulty?

Same problem for me. "F:\PortableApps\Tasks\Wiki Tasks.exe" is not picked up by the menu, though "Wiki Library.exe" in the same directory is. I moved the latter to another folder - the menu continues to pick up this exe file, but ignore the former. Just to be safe, after moving the file, I unplugged the drive and plugged it back in to clear any "remembered" icons, but the same problem persists.
I don't know if the compilation of the exe matters, but both are a batch file to load portable firefox and then the wiki file compiled with exescript and reshack to change the icon. Both done the same way.
Rich
You'll note that it's been changed to Pre-Release 2 (Build 1.0.2.4) which fixes the issue where the last icon (alpha by product name) is left off. Are you now using this newer release?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Hi
Sorry - I thought I did (downloaded at 9:38AM today)... YES the new version fixed that for me. I also like the skinning ability - simple and easy

I like the new theme too.
Do you have photoshop psd's for the theme you can post?

"Because they stand on a wall and say, 'Nothing is going to hurt you tonight. Not on my watch.'" (A Few Good Men)
Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous.(Albert Einstein)
Compiled using BDS 2006 Architect 10.0.2163.24987 Update 1 on Windows XP PRO SP 2. I copied the EXE to my protable HDD in place of version 1.0. I am running PAM from the root of my protable drive. When launching the app from the same machine I get the following error message:
Cannot open file "E:\App\DefaultData\Theme\background.jpg". The system cannot find the path specified.
I found that I had to copy the App folder from the project directory to the root of my portable drive. Now the app launches, but it only finds applications stored in the root of my drive. V1.0 was looking in :\PortableApps\
I haven't looked into the code to see if this is a bug or something that I am doing wrong. I will look into this later, but for now, it compiles and runs on my machine.
Your errors are in placement. It needs to be placed in the PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu directory, same as before. And the App directory needs to stay with it now as well. All images are external and, if they're not found, you'll get an error.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I have been looking at the code and I see that changing the placement of the files will fix my problem. I noticed that I have the PAM executable in the root of my drive as well as in the correct location under PortableApps\
I corrected my file placement and everything is working as expected now. I hope I didn't cause any confusion.
I've been looking at your code and it is well done. Thanks for a great application!
Perhaps you're confusing it with StartPortableApps.exe which just calls PortableAppsMenu.exe in the location mentioned. SPA.exe should be in the root directory to allow for easy launching of the menu.
I tried to keep the code as readable as possible and I added some extra comments for some of the current temporary hacks (like paths to the theme and icons) and what they'll be in the future. Glad you like it
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I'm using Delphi 7, so I was unable to compile.
I REALLY like the dark theme! Runs like a charm - although I had no problem with the previous version.
Thanks!!!
Scott
Thank you very much!
Paste the following code into the Notepad, then save it as test.locale in the same folder as PortableAppsMenu.exe
I hope I dont interfere with someones work.

EDIT: Thanx! I didn't do much post-formatting so I'm not very familiar with this.
I changed the OPTIONS_ADD_APP, OPTIONS_REMOVE APP and MENU_RESTORE and shortened it because it was too long for the menu.

Sweet, I was able to change the documents directory structure to my liking and set the pictures button to open with irfanview.

When will renaming and removing unwanted stuff from the menu be included? I thought it was suppose to be in the next release?
This is only a minor release. It was supposed to fix a few issues by the looks of things and give a taste of the theme options. The full release will include a bit more no doubt.
What menu options are you looking to remove? As its open source and its above you can easily change and re-compile it. Ive never touched delphi in my life and I figured it out soon enough.
It's a bug fix with some new features.
I believe Day is referring to removing certain entries from the menu.

I think between you, Day, and others the effort is noticed, but I think if the color was just on the border and left alone on the right where the buttons are (grey/black) then they would conform more to what John's original theme is. Look at the themes SmithTech did. I think those are exactly what John could use without modification.
I could have the gradient going sideways, so it's dark in the centre and light on the outside or vice versa.
I prefer it the way it is, but one must always please the customer
Hopefully John will give us the PSD and/or XCF used to create the theme when he's back.

If you want to do the gradient like John did in the original use the gradient in photoshop there is an option to do a "outward" gradient that basically starts in the middle and fills outward, you can do it horizontally or vertically.

better and better! Thank you John!
Two small issues on my behalf:
1. If I translate (rename) the "Video" Folder/Icon it does not show that after the PortableAppsMenu-restart.
2. To me it seems a bit weird to have a "Documents" button which does not lead me to documents ONLY but to a folder containing the other folders for Music, Video and Pictures too. Forces one to create another Documents folder inside the Documents folder.
BR
zikarus
John has it setup the same way XP sets up the My Documents folder.
Your My Documents folder is home to everything, while the My Music and My Video folders are just sub-folders in My Documents in XP.
It's no different. You save your normal documents into the "dcouments" folder, while music goes in the "music" sub-folder.
I understand why John structured the folders the way he did, compatibility and standardization.
That should be the default for most users who are used to doing things the "normal" way.
Unfortunately Microsoft frequently does things half @$$.
Music and Videos etc. aren't documents why they did it that way is beyond me.
One of the first things I do when I set up a new machine is move and rename those folders to.
+My Files
+-My Documents
+-My Music
+-My Pictures
etc.
I downloaded the source for PAM and changed the structure to
root
+PortableFiles
+-My Documents
+-My Music
+-My Pictures
Now I'm just waiting on the option to Add/Remove/Modify apps in the menu and PAM will be perfect.

Umm, films...it's a nice word, but, I think videos ir better. Because films would be a full movie normally in my thinking, whearas a video can be any kind of "video".
And the capital letters at just the beggining makes sense.
El problema con película, es que se refiere a eso, a una película, no a un vídeo/video (que por cierto, son sinónimos, al igual estratósfera y estratosfera).

why the menu app does not have an About menu? for version info and...?
Found an issue. When it comes to displaying your icons it checks the version number of windows. Problem is it wants the major version to be 5 or higher and the minor to be 1 or higher for it to display alpha transparant icons.
Vista is version 6.0. So it fails on the...
and (Win32MinorVersion >= 1)
So I changed that line (around line 300) to read
if (Win32MajorVersion >= 5) and (Win32MinorVersion >= 1) or (Win32MajorVersion >= 6)
Im not a delphi programmer, this is just the way I figured to get it to display alpha icons in XP and Vista.
it wants it to be 5.1 or higher.
Personally, I'd concatenate the strings into a floating point integer, then check.

D'oh! I'll just have to be patient and download it from another computer then...The firewall here thinks it's a Trojan (Banker.cfg)
Description: Portable Apps Menu itself will appear in the menu list if the folder it is in is not named "PortableAppsMenu".
Workaround: Rename the folder it resides in to "PortableAppsMenu" and the item will no longer appear in the list.
Suggested Fix #1 (Recommended): Get the full path of the running program (ie C:\Path\PortableAppsMenu.exe) and ensure it is never added to the menu, and remove the special check for the "PortableAppsMenu" folder. In some languages, you can get the full path of the running program by grabbing the "0th" command line parameter.
Suggested Fix #2: Do not use the directory check. Instead, check for the PortableAppsMenu.exe filename.
Signature automatically removed for being too awesome.
