LMMS Startup Error

Whenever I open LMMS the splash screen for the app appears and then the standard "program has encountered a program and needs to close" error box. What is the minimum system requirements for this app?

Vague

The requirements are quite vague: http://lmms.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Requirements

As previously requested, What is the full error message, your install path & your operating system?

[EDIT] Also, apparently LMMS doesn't play well with unicode paths. If your installation is to a unicode path, try changing it and see if that fixes the problem.

ok

OK, I haven't tested on XP. I'll do some testing of portable & local, then get back to you.

Working on XP Here

I fired up my Windows XP VM and LMMS Portable shows the splash and then brings up the full UI. This is a clean Windows XP VM with all updates available applied and IE7 installed.

Lord_Theren: Have you applied all available updates through last month when Microsoft dropped support?

local?

Have you tried a local install? If you haven't yet, please do, temporarily, as a troubleshooting measure.

If you're able to run locally, then there's an issue with how the portable package is interacting with your system. In that case, we can continue trying to figure out what's happening.

If not, it's not to do with the portable package, and I'd suggest contacting the developer for help.

Same results with local install

I don't know. My computer is really old and outdated. I often have these kinds of problems when running programs and applications.

Update

I'd fire up Windows update and ensure you're applied every update that's still there, including updating IE to the last Windows XP release (which updates certain Windows internals). As I said, it is working on my clean fully updated VM with Windows XP, so it does appear to be working under Windows XP in some circumstances.

You can contact the publisher if it's still not working since it seems to be a base app incompatibility with your machine. I think LMMS is still supporting Windows XP even though it's been discontinued, but you'd have to check with them.

No need for IE

IE is pretty much killed on my XP SP3 system. You shouldn't need it for LMMS. I didn't.

Does it have anything to do

Does it have anything to do with RAM, hard drive space or getting drivers updated?

Few Things

It could be something like your processor. If you're running Windows XP, you may have an older machine with a processor that isn't supported by some modern software. As an example, this other user found that Chrome later than 34 will not run on his Windows XP because it requires a Pentium 4 or later chip (which excludes his AMD Athlon XP even though it was out about the same time): https://portableapps.com/node/41560

Processor

Wher do I find processor information? When I go to MyComputer>Properties>General I get this information:

Intel(R) Celeron(TM) CPU
1.20 GHz, 250 MB of RAM

Sorry, I'm not too good with the hardware of computers.

Hmmm

I think that's a more modern Celeron, but it's hard to tell from that. If you fire up CPU-Z Portable it should give you the complete info on it.

Possible Answer

http://lmms.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Requirements

Depending on the type and size of the songs you plan to write, it's recommended to have at least 1 GHz and 512 MB of RAM. If you plan on using VST-plugins and/or a recent SVN-copy of LMMS, it's also recommended to have multiple cores and/or CPUs.

Looks Like your system only has half of required Ram

Seconded, not enough RAM

Dear Lord

I agree with vf2nsr, you just don't have enough goats in your flock.

P.S. ok, I've wanted to say that for a while, couldn't resist and I'll do it again Smile
