If I compress the PortableApps folder, will the applications work correctly from the platform menu?

A zipped folder isn't a folder. It's a single ZIP file containing compressed data. EXEs can't be run from a ZIP. Windows Explorer just makes it behave a bit like a folder by using the built-in Windows compressed folder handling to have it open similar to a folder would.
You can, however, set the folder to 'Compress contents to save disk space' within Properties - Advanced Attributes if it is an NTFS file system. It will likely slow down app performance, of course, and I am unsure offhand if this will work on an external drive moved between computers (though I think it will).
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Unfortunately, my flash drive is a FAT32 file system so that isn't an option. I suppose I need to get a bigger one. However I did learn something new about compressed folders so it isn't a total loss. Thank you for your help!
