Please note that with the Toucan 3.1 release, new development is on temporary hiatus as we seek a new developer and maintainer. As stated in the post:
Steve LamertonOn a more personal note, due to increased commitments over recent years I will no longer be developing Toucan. I haven't been able to spend the time work on it that it needs or deserves. If you are interested in developing it further then please leave a note in the forum, I would be happy to help get things set up. I will still be around on the forums answering questions as and when I can.
If anyone is interested in taking over development, please contact us or post here with questions for Steve et al.
Please refrain from posting any bug reports or requests for assistance and further development in this topic.
UPDATE (2017-07-05): Development has been restarted by Alex (aka alt) and a new release has been posted: https://portableapps.com/news/2017-07-05--toucan-3.1.5-released
...and I've even got it compiling fine, but I have several specific questions (a couple of things seem to be broken and it doesn't seem to be a purely compilation problem).
Steve, as it looks like, is unavailable (tried posting in the "Building Toucan from scratch" thread and sent him two messages through his personal website (listed as a contact venue on Portanbleapps).
Is there any other way to contact him, or is there anyone else who knows how the currently released version of Toucan was built?
It's only been a year and 3 months. Am I too late?
I know nothing about the gentleman that created this or how it was built except for what I read in the Help file.
I do, however, like the program very much and would love to see you continue the work.
I would be willing to do whatever I could to help, if needed.
Rick
Well, as you have probably seen in the forum, I've picked it up and even made several releases, but there was no interest from Portableapps.com owners in me doing that - as you can see they haven't even published those releases I made, even though they contain several fixes and I have asked them several times.
Neither there was any serious interest from users, so even though I still use Toucan, it's enough for me in its 3.1.3 form - thus not that much interest in continuing, given all of the above.
If that changed I think I could continue.
That would be on me. I'm sorry about that. Steve is no longer maintaining Toucan as he's busy with life. So, there's no one left on staff familiar enough with the code to properly review changes. And alt didn't like the SourceForge SCM it was in and set up his own.
As we're now starting to release code on github, I was wondering if you'd be interested in participating there and getting Toucan back up to official status. Please drop me a note via the developer email on the contact page so I can get your particulars.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Yeah, SourceForge's Git was more convenient for me than SourceForge's Mercurial, but I still kept it on SF to not drift away too much from the main PA repo. Glad that you're moving to GitHub, that's even more convenient.
I've sent you an email to that dev address.
Hi John,
I've sent the email on Nov 13th to (email hidden by mod) as suggested on the Contact Us page in the "Developers, Translators <...>" section.
Haven't heard anything back since then, is that expected or the email got lost?
I have not had time to begin setting up at Github yet to enable this to happen. Between my development box going belly-up, a death in the family, and the holidays, it's been a long month. Setting up github is on the list.

Do you need some help with that migration? I've been using git and Github rather extensively for a couple of years.
Just so everyone knows - the move has completed and Toucan is now hosted on GitHub at https://github.com/PortableApps/Toucan.
Please use GitHub's "issues" mechanism to report bugs and request features from now on.
@John, it would be really good to update the PA Toucan page, it's hopelessly outdated (https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/toucan).
I realize this never actually got marked as a [Bug] (so it would appear on the bugs page), but it would be nice to mark it as [fixed] or [closed] (or [Hiatus ended] or something) and add a link to the Toucan 3.1.5 Release announcement to the opening post.
And: Congratulations alt/Alex. I'm really glad your work finally got officially released.

I've marked it as closed and unpinned it. The original post has been updated.

Thanks, yeah. The only problem right now compared to couple of years ago when I was reviving it, is that I don't have that much time for Toucan any more, but let's see what I can do.
Too bad you don't have as much time for it, but I'm glad you did revive it.
I'm not too sure who else is able to help, but those of us who can will try.
Also, in the vein of making it easier for others to help, could you possibly provide some up-to-date documentation on what exactly is needed to build Toucan? or at least what your build environment looks like?

Is toucan able to handle "open" files, like you'd find with mysql running?
