logojPortable 8 Update 31 (formerly Java Portable) has been released by PortableApps.com. jPortable (32-bit and 64-bit) allows you to easily install the Java® runtime engine to your PortableApps.com-enabled device for use with portable apps like LibreOffice Portable and Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition, and Google Chrome Portable, all without any Java runtime on the local PC. This release updates Java to the latest version, fixing a security issue. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format for easy use from any portable device and integration with the PortableApps.com Platform. It's freeware for business and personal use.

Update automatically or install from the portable app store in the PortableApps.com Platform.

Features

jPortable allows you to easily add a Java® runtime environment to your portable device. It automatically works with apps in PortableApps.com Format like OpenOffice.org Portable. No Java® runtime environment needs to be installed on the local machine and no admin rights are required. The JVM will be downloaded directly from Oracle's servers as part of the installation process.

jPortable Launcher

In addition to using jPortable with portable apps packaged in PortableApps.com Format, you can also use our jPortable Launcher to run Java apps in JAR format. It will even automatically portablize the settings of many Java apps.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

jPortable is packaged as a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

John, I didn't think Java 8 would run on XP, only Java 7, but the jPortable page still lists XP. Yes, I know XP is no longer supported by MS or officially supported by Oracle even for Java 7 but there are still many XP systems out there. People are likely to run into those in their portable travels, especially in some company environments where users also can't install apps on those systems.

Is there anything that can be done to keep Java 7 readily available on PAc & to warn users that only 7 will work on XP? Or, wonder of wonders, will Java 8 Portable actually work on an XP system?

Java 8 works on Windows XP, it's just unsupported... as is most software on Windows XP at this point. I confirmed it with both database design and wizard use in LibreOffice and launching minecraft.jar using the jPortable Launcher.

This was really just a happy outcome. We won't be going to any extra lengths for Java on XP. Buying people 2 months by writing a special handler within LibreOffice Portable and the (returning) OpenOffice Portable to handle CommonFiles\JavaLegacy isn't in the cards. Two months is when Java 7 is dropped and is no longer supported or secure (aka 'Don't touch it'). Anyone really married to XP can grab the old jPortable 7 from SourceForge. It's only currently supported with LibreOffice and OpenOffice anyway. And neither require it for anything critical.

for the fast response & the surprise outcome! I wouldn't expect you to go through hoops for it, only some kind of warning but hey, if it actually works on XP, then it's not needed anyway. I thought both Fx & Chrome Portable could also make use of it. Not so?

They can, but we're going to stop promoting it that way. Browser-based Java apps seem mostly dead at this point anyway. We'll maintain the feature as long as we can. But I think Chrome is going to be dropping it entirely in the future.

Great work on adding JRE to portable Apps.
Is there any way to get it to trust 'websites', for eg 192.168.y.z or 10.x.y.z?
I work on a lot of old hardware for networks like Switches and SAN's.
It would be great to be able to use the GUI for easier configuring.

OR is there some way to add support for say JAVA 6.22?
I don't want to install Java onto a computer to configure these things, a portable firefox with java support would be so handy.
