Updating the portable version of Notepad++

From briefly reading around . . . it looks like in the portable version of Notepad++:

1.) it does not have an auto-updater, for security purposes - and there is no place to click to update it under the question mark

2.) if you update it manually, you lose all of your plugins - and all settings go back to default

. . . is this correct?

Thank you

possible language difference

you asked "is this correct?"
the answer is "No"

The way I understand it some NP++ plugins need admin rights and as a result NP++ attempts admin regardless when doing an update. PA can't know what plugins any user has so a permission war of sorts ensues.

I keep
a fully working NP++ along with the weird combo of plugins I like on systems I know I have control over; and
a minimal one on my USB stick
does this help?

Fully Working?

When you say "a fully working NP++", do you mean the non-portable version?

Yes, that way I don't have to

Yes, that way I don't have to double think about my plug-ins on a day to day basis. Obviously not very useful to you if you spend most of your time on systems where you don't have admin rights.

I'm worried...

Using the portable version of NP++ puts my plugins at risk? o.o

I don't get anthropomorphic

I don't get anthropomorphic about plug-ins; data possibly, plug-ins, no.

There are (at least) two things to be aware of

1. some NP++ plug-ins need admin rights to do their thing, if you don't have admin rights their behaviour may be unexpected

2. because (I think) of 1. the NP++ updater requires admin rights even if none of the installed plug-ins actually require it so may fail or behave unexpectedly if you don't have admin rights on the system you are on at the time

If you always refuse NP++ plug-in updates on systems where you don't have admin privileges you are probably OK.

Caveat: it is hard to be certain about any of this due to the range and scope of plug-ins. For example, I'd wager that no-one has tested them all in conjunction with each other non-portably.

Regarding your responses...

0. What are you talking about, anthropomorphic?

1. Okay.

2. Okay.

3. I won't be updating anything on other computers, then. I'll just use NP++ and its plugins as usual and then update when I get home.

4. Okies.

Logical conclusion

BTW, the logical conclusion is probably for someone to contact the NP++ dev and mention that he shouldn't ask for admin rights unnecessarily.

The dev seems an approachable person, if enough people show an interest I'll say hello and mention this myself.

P.S. CelticKat, I think you may have mid-spelled metro in your profile Smile

P.P.S are you asking me what anthropomorphic means??

I agree

but I don't know how to contact them, so...

No, I spelled it right. "Metrology" is the correct spelling of "metrology". Lol.

Also, no, I don't know what the heck you were talking about when you mentioned something being anthropomorphic or whatever... I know what anthropomorphic means, but the context of your usage of it... That's what I'm missing.

That's not anthropomorphism

Saying she cares is not anthropomorphism. Saying NP++ would be sad if it lost a plugin is.

Don't you care about the integrity of your programs?

Oh my goddesses...

THANK you. I'd much rather have my issue dealt with than sit here humbly asking for help and instead just getting insulted.

And you should provide better answers...

It's not a "take it or leave it" situation. It's possible to provide an answer without insulting the asker.

Move on.
