Opera 29 & profile handling/erasing ?

Running Win 8.1 I have Opera 29.0.1795.60 installed on both an usb-key and on my harddrive.
I'm using mainly the usb installation.
Regularly all my settings (bookmarks, speed dial, open tabs, ...) are lost at startup. Not even after an update or a crash. I don't know what triggers this behaviour ?
What is happening ?
As far as I can see Opera moves "profile" folder from "J:\PortableApps\OperaPortable\Data\profile" to "J:\PortableApps\OperaPortable\App\Opera\29.0.1795.60\profile" at startup
I've restored that "profile" folder from backup but it's not enough. What else needs to be restored ?

Data

It should be in Data before the app starts. The launcher moves it to App while the app is running. And the launcher movies it back to Data on exit. That way it's available for Backups of just data, etc. Note that it won't be moved back to Data on exit if you don't properly exit the app (pull the USB key, shutdown Windows which just kills the app, etc). But the launcher will detect this, let you know it wasn't closed properly, and then move it back to Data for the next time you start it. The App\Opera\profile directory will be preserved during the upgrade process (normally, the whole App directory is wiped on upgrade) so that if you upgrade after a crash or bad exit your data won't be wiped out.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Profile erasing

I had the same (occasionally) but now I seem to be caught in an infernal loop : I have a backup profile with my bookmarks, speed dials, extensions, etc... that I need to copy manually back to the usb key (I copy the whole "Data" directory) because everytime I close and reopen Opera the profile gets erased. How can I stop this behaviour ?

Best regards,
Rolfi

I just had Opera 31 dump my profile. Closed Opera in the usual way, and I realized I needed it again. It had been ~2 minutes, so any launcher business should have been done. But it opened up, brand new profile.

It had happened once before, but I dismissed it as a fluke. Now I'm wondering if this will get to be a regular thing?

It's a shame the sync doesn't work. If it were as simple as logging in and having everything restored, like Chrome does, I'd be much happier. I can't even tell what sync actually syncs. Doesn't appear to be anything. Active tabs maybe?

It's a shame. I liked Opera.

Running From?

What media are you running from? From a technical standpoint, the behavior indicated should be impossible the way the code is written, so any clue to additional variables is helpful.

Portable hard drive, 500GB

Portable hard drive, 500GB Western Digital MyPassport. Awesome little device.

I have it set up similarly at home, with the regularly installed Opera. Any way to copy the profile over? For now I've just gone back to Chrome. Chrome had issues with Facebook (heavy lag scrolling past the first page or two) so I was using Opera for that and a few other things. Now Chrome seems to be fine. Opera's good on Android. I just wish it were more like Chrome. Sign in and all your stuff is just there. Extensions, bookmarks, it all works.
