Thunderbird portable crashing

Having been a long standing fan of Portable apps and Portable Thunderbird, I now find that it is crashing all the time.
It is the latest version (sorry, can't fell you which one it is since it is freezing shortly on loading).
I admit, the overall size of the application has increased to 4 GB since I move all the IMAP folders into a local Thunderbird folder that serves as my 'store' of emails on my SD card (leaving my IMAP email with more space).
I don't know what I am doing wrong.
Besides, am I right in reading that Mozilla have now discontinued support to TB?
What portable email client do I migrate to, in that case?

Size

Having an mail store of that size on an SD card will likely cause Thunderbird to perform very slowly unless you are using a super-high-quality, super-fast SD card and using a high-quality SD card reader. Note that, as a general rule, most built-in SD card readers on both laptops and desktops are the cheapest, worst quality readers (bad drivers, high CPU usage, etc).

Also, about Mozilla foundation discontinuing TB

Any comment on that? Would that impact on Portable TB in the future?

Not Discontinued

Thunderbird has not been discontinued. It's never been discontinued. It was moved from a primary focus to a secondary one and is now being spun off into a community project. There are no other popular portable email apps that are anywhere close to as well maintained as Thunderbird. Email clients are not very popular these days due to the fact that the vast majority of people only use webmail in their personal life and either a hosted and branded webmail app or Exchange/Outlook for work.

Just a thought - if I was to move my app to a SSD drive on my laptop and then try and load it from there, would that make a difference?

Tried doing it, but am getting a 'Couldn't load XPCOM' error.
I am using Windows 10.

Not sure it would work on a portable apps perhaps?
Only because the profile etc is stored in the same place as the programme.

What I did was to use the last backed up version and solved the problem.
The big advantage of portable apps is that one can simply copy a slightly earlier backup and paste it into the portable apps folder.
Worked well so far.
(However, not Firefox is starting to play up, maybe will do the same for it too!)

the profile and info is stored in the Data area not the program folder AFAIR

You also may want ot try something like SpeedyFox which wi handle Thunderbird as well as Firefox to clean up the profiles and such?

Return of the gremlins

It started hanging up again!
Portable TB starts well, but then when you click on ANY folder in TB, it hangs up - 'Not responding'.
I then have to shut it down.

Full Steps

To double check, did you try copying the entire thing locally, then reinstalling the current version of Thunderbird over it, then running the app locally?

To be clear, Thunderbird not starting is not related to the portable version. It's generally an indicator of corruption within the app or the profile. It can also be an incompatible extension, though you will generally see an error message of some sort.

Dear John,
Thanks for your Portable apps and thanks in particular for your post above.
I removed a couple of add-ons (Lightining and Send-Later) and the problem is now resolved.
I think your comment about the corruption within the app set me thinking and led me to disable the above add-ons.

(I would hate to think of what I am offering as a donation, so consider it gratitude. When your favourite portable app stops working, you become aware of how precious it is!)

Automatic spell checker no longer works - Portable Thunderbird

Hello ! Since version 68.6.0, the automatic spell checker no longer works. I took over version 60.9.1 and it works again. I waited for version 68.7.0 and did the update again. Problem, the automatic spell checker doesn't work either. I tested the non-portable version and the automatic spell checker works well. So this comes from the portable version.

Your criticisms of TB Portable aren't valid

Your criticisms of TB Portable aren't valid. As yet TB Portable 68.7.0 hasn't even completed building let alone having been released. So where you're getting you version 68.7.0 certainly isn't from PortableApps. The same can said of your TB Portable 68.6.0 that has never been built by PortableApps and, as far as I am aware, never will be, so again where you're getting this version certainly isn't from PortableApps either.

If you are going to comment on a portable application from PortableApps you should only be doing so if the whatever you're running really did come from PortableApps.

Use Portable Apps on both Flash Drive and HDD/SSD.

Tbird Portable 91.7.0 XPCOM

Tbird has been playing up lately.
Not starting or multiple processes - blank screen
Today started to get the dreaded XPCOM.
All I can find is about Tbird folder is
 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\
 C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\
But I have on removable SSD
How do I do a clean reinstall without losing Profile/Data

Manual Upgrade

First, be sure to check your drive for errors. Then you can delete the ThunderbirdPortable\AppThunderbird and ThunderbirdPortable\AppThunderbird64 folders to ensure all bits are deleted. Then perform a standalone app upgrade: https://portableapps.com/support/portable_app#upgrading
