Let's say you install portable app XYZ using the PA Launcher.
Then you close the PA Launcher.
Is it now possible to run app XYZ without first running the PA Launcher, and have app XYZ clean up after itself?
Or is it necessary to launch app XYZ from the PA Launcher so that the cleanup process takes place after the app is done running?

That is correct.
Note that the correct term is PortableApps.com Platform, not Launcher - we use the term PortableApps.com Launcher as the name of the tool used to make the application run portably, whereas the Platform is the menu.

You have to download any updates manually from the 'store' and 'install' them over the previous version, just as you would with any other software.
