This is 'Mozilla Firefox Quantum, Portable Edition'!
DANGER: This is extremely incompatibility and CRAZY update!
Well, as you were, there is NOT 'Firefox'! This is like a degraded Chromium!
1: If you have upgraded to 'Firefox Quantum', you won't be able to downgrade this version later on to 'Firefox' (NOT Quantum, include by ESR branch) because make incompatible changes to the profile!
2: This has completely different operability with 'Firefox' (NOT Quantum) so far!
3: With this, almost all of the extensions and themes for 'Firefox' (NOT Quantum) can not be used!
I'm extremely angry at Mozilla!
'Firefox' is DEAD! 'Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition' (NOT Quantum, without ESR branch) is the END !!!!!!
We should NOT recommend this release very very very very very very match!

Firefox 56.0.2 (2017-10-26) is the last version of 'Firefox' (NOT Quantum, without ESR branch) by Mozilla, and version 57.x or newer will instead be called 'Firefox Quantum'!

The product is still called Firefox.
Quantum is how Mozilla is referring to the browsers including the current set of changes, as the changes are significant, as you've noted.
This is the stable version of the browser, and as such is the correct version to be recommending.
Our opinions about it do not have any bearing, we simply provide the product as provided by Mozilla.
We are well aware that you, personally, are not happy with the changes, and you are well within your rights to express those opinions.

When Firefox is slow, people just swearing for not enough speed compared to Chrome...
Now they made it faster and felt-at-similar-speed as Chrome..., people -- for eg. you -- swear for something else... LOL :0

I think Quantum is the best Firefox to date, I had used it since John anounce the test release.

I completely agree, v57 caused a lot of bewilderment, after such mad update 70% of extensions fell off. Before the update, I saved my profile in advance, for those who did not do so will be a tragedy, since it's impossible to return to 52esr-56. Rollback to 52.5.0 ESR. For Mozilla, this is not very thought out, a big minus and a further loss of users! (((

Don't be so melodramatic. It's a web browser, not the end of the world! Many browsers have undergone dramatic transformations, even Firefox prior to Quantum. People will eventually get used to this new look and if people really need a more traditional looking Firefox-based web browser, there is always Pale Moon??
Quantum
For all intents and purposes, Firefox 57+ is a completely new browser.
It was written from scratch with a completely new engine, and old extensions do not work with it.
I am amazed at the blatant disregard for user experience at Mozilla - they decided to mess up all of the users configurations without saying anything in advance. People lost entire sessions, hundreds of tabs, extension settings. Its crazy. Actually, anything with autoupdates will cause that, so it is partially the users fault too for leaving it on.
That said, here is what you have to keep in mind:
- Quantum can potentially become better than the old FF. With time. New engine allows it to scale with the number of CPU cores, something which wasn't happening before. Old FF is really slow once you get to a large number of tabs.
- It is still experimental, despite being released on stable branch. So you can have some memory leak which will crash your browser eventually.
- A ton of API is still not implemented. So, current functionality of extensions is very limited. This should be improved with time. If you are a heavy extension user, do not upgrade!!! Use FF 52 ESR
- While new FF consumes more memory than the old one, with large number of tabs it still scales waaaaaaay better than Chrome - try opening 500 tabs on Chrome. It will take all memory and crash before that, even with tab unloading. Meanwhile I have 500 tabs on new FF and it only takes a couple of GB, since they are all offloaded from the memory with the extension, and it does not impact the speed significantly.
- Customisation of UI is extremely poor. Comparing to Vivaldi, I'd say FF is missing 90% of its options. You can't hide tab bar. There is no vertical tabs. You can't change colour of tabs/windows or anything for that matter. It is really bad. You can make changes by editing a CSS style though. Yeah, that is really great for regular consumers.
