I've just posted a pre-release of OpenOffice.org Portable 2.1. New in this version is a long-awaited feature: the ability to use Java from the portable device. This means you can use the OpenOffice.org functionality that depends on Java (Wizards, some Base functions, etc) even from a PC that doesn't have Java installed.
Java is not yet GPLed, so it can not be hosted on SourceForge. Nor can it be repackaged due to licensing. So, you'll need to supply your own.
To enable Java, copy the Java files from a local install, usually C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_11. Copy the whole structure intact (so you'd have a lib and a bin directory in this Java directory when complete. Copy those files to either of these locations:
?:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable\App\Java
?:\PortableApps\CommonFiles\Java
And then add in a file called javaportable.ini in that same Java directory above with the following in it:
[JavaPortable]
Vendor=Sun Microsystems Inc.
Version=1.5.0_11
URL=http://java.sun.com/
That will enable OpenOffice.org Portable to work with a copy of Java on your portable device.

Hi John,

Thanks Marko. I'm heading to bed at the moment, sorry I've been out of touch. But if you have the translation of the OpenOffice.org Portable main page, support page and help.html stub, I can send you the build instructions and we can release the German package at the same time or close to the English release. Now that Drupal 5 is running a bit better, I can give folks better access to translating, etc.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Hi John,
we have the pages allready translated. I will have a little look at the en pages in order to compare it an make last changes, if needed.
To release the new German version at the same time will be great!
BTW: If You want I could create German Pages for the suite too, because PortableBackupRestore and a first Pre-Release of the new Menu is ready too.
Please send me the built instructions and I will set up the German pages as soon as possible.
Regards
Marko

The FAQ for OpenOffice.org (see question 11) seems to indicate that you can bundle the Sun JRE with OpenOffice.
See: http://www.openoffice.org/FAQs/faq-overview.html
Or am I misreading the answer?
-IP
Taken from the same FAQ - "note that the JRE needs to be bundled unmodified with the OpenOffice.org software". The Standard JRE package is designed for a local install, and bundling it for use with any form of portable application would require modification. The only reason using it as instructed by John is legal is because he is not directly giving us the modified version, he is merely giving information on how to adapt the original installation for personal use.
Hi John,
we still waiting for the Drupal informations in order to get the German Pages online on PortableApps.com.
I know that You works hard on every part of PortableApss, so we will 'stay tuned'

I sent it days ago when I originally mentioned it here. I was wondering why I hadn't heard back. Did your email address change? Ping me by email.

Hello John,
first of all:
Great job done with your portableapps!
I use them a lot and they are most useful!
Hello Marko,
when and where will the german version of the pre-release be available?
I'm very interested in testing the Java "implementation".
Thx in advance
Dirk
Hi Dirk,
I will upload it Friday morning and then I will post the link here.
Remember, in order to keep the download small You'll have to add the jre by Your self.
If You don't have a local jre at present, use the time to download it, it will save You time

The German pre-releases of OpenOffice.org Portable with python (mp) and without it (op) You could find ->here.
Follow Johns instructions to add Your local JRE or alternativly download the BETA Version of the new German Version of PortableAppsSuite Base from the same place, copy the JRE to PortableApps/CommonFiles/Java like described in the file liesmich.txt in this folder and last but not least install OpenOffice.org Portable German.

Every version of OpenOffice that i have installed keeps reproducing the same error listed beneath it does not matter whether i change fonts or add java to the system. All i get is the error beneath and when you do get into it there are no icons no wording no fonts whatsoever it is extremly frustrating.
OpenOffice.org 2.0
ERROR
Configuration data in
‘[Some words removed to save space: Mod RM]ProtocolHandler.xcu’ is corrupted. Without this data some functions may not operate correctly. Do you want to continue startup of OpenOffice.org without the corrupted configuration data?
Yes or No
The path is too long. Try moving it to C:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable

Actually i found that after installing a new menu on the suite it actually worked without a problem. I also have a friend with the same problem last night as well, on her pc with the exact same errors. Now going to try and talk her through how to fix it.
Just a note that you can get an early release of the GPL'd Java Development Kit that includes JRE from Java's website.

Great work.
But I would prefer to have a setting in a file where OO can find Java because I prefer to have a different folder structure.
happy poster saying "goood work, John" and "I like the portable java".
But it still has the problem we discussed here
Why don't you use the "new" launcher?

Release date of new launcher > release date of OOP 2.1 PR 1. This came out before the new launcher did.

Why cant I see that myself?
Then Ill wait for the final release...

Hello Group;
After I follow John's information about installing JAVA. How do I know that the JAVA part is working.
Never used it before. Openoffice says it is not needed. That is why I ask the question.
May be I shoud ask what feature to try in OpenOffice.

Use any wizard... like the letter wizard. They're all Java-based and won't work without Java.

Hello John;
Thank you for your help. I will try a wizard out.

Hello Group;
I did not find a shared font directory similar to the last version. So I added a copy of the font directory from my last version to this prerelease. I put it in the same place and OpenOffice did pick it up.
Frank D. Hubeny
It was accidentally omitted from the pre-release. It was included in 2.0.4, but I'd heard reports it didn't work anymore.

Great that you have made it possible to implement Java now - thank you!
Btw.: Do you plan to release a 2.1 final? Since OO 2.2 RC3 is out already it might be easier to directly wait for the very soon to come 2.2 final, no?

Been using it for a couple of weeks. Used Writer, Presentations, and Draw modules. I see no problems.
Norm
can you update to OOO2.2
If I remember correctly. John doesn't do RC releases here because of the huge amount of extra work. An exception is Firefox.

Hello.
This 2.1 version works fine for me John.
As people said, 2.2 came out and is final.
Thank you.
when can we have this, because 2.2updated many new feature and security flaws.
Hi John,
I know, that You have a lot of work...
... is the new OOo-Launcher ready to publish?
In my mind we should publish it with the new 2.2 OOo instead 2.1.0
I have created a German version (based on Your last Launcher in the Pre-Release 1) and (again) I could create an english version for testig too.
Please tell me what's the best way in order to publish the 2.2 version of OOo Portable as soon as possible.
Thanks a lot and kind regards
Marko
