I have set Thunderbird v68.11.0 (32-bit) as default email client on my Win10Pro machine, and checked that the mailto: link is handled by Thunderbird.
However each time I click a mail link on a webpage, it opens thunderbird in "new account" mode, instead of normal mode where I already have 5 accounts listed.
Can anyone suggest where the problem might lie?

Thunderbird not responding to email links
If you set Thunderbird or Firefox as the default in the app itself, it sets up in local mode, using a local profile. You need to use a third party tool to add ThunderbirdPortable.exe as a mail account and set that as your default.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
As far as I can tell through windows default apps it is registered as default. The problem is the way the program is called I think?
Thunderbird.exe vs ThunderbirdPortable.exe are two different things. Thunderbird.exe is registered as default, which will run in local mode.

So I just need make thunderbird.exe a shortcut to thunderbird portable.exe?
I shall give thata try!
You need to use a third party utility to manually register ThunderbirdPortable.exe as a mail client and then set that as your default.
