This dev test has been released officially
The current sPortable release is for Skype Classic 7.x which has now been deprecated by Microsoft. This updated release aims to update sPortable to the new Skype for Desktop 8.x series. Any existing Skype Classic settings are not used by Skype 8 as it's an entirely different app.
Existing sPortable 7 installs will be moved to an sPortableLegacy7 directory. Existing sPortable 8 Dev Test installs will be moved to an sPortableLegacy8 directory.

I downloaded and successfully installed
portable Skype 8.33.0.50 Dev Test 1
last October 27 [Saturday]
Over all it worked-- more details below.
Good
- This version of Skype runs better and quieter
- No longer heavy on CPU
- Looked same as previous Skype 8 Desktop versions
- video and voice calls worked..
- Can send Instant messages+ text
New feature
- Read Receipt
- side by side "face view"
- receive notifications when one reacts to message
- Manage how people find you
--appear in suggestion or search result
Not so Good :
minor change is Skype windows screen during video call
- supposed side by side "face view"
between me and my contact is gone
- Size of my face suppose to change when I click it
Now my face remained like a "thumb nail view" ??
so tiny!-- cannot see my self..
- Portable Skype 8.33.0.50 Dev Test 1 still leave traces
in the computer after logout or quitting Skype.
I still have to manually delete it.
If there are specific traces, please post what they are (exact paths, what version of Windows you're on, whether you have local Skype, etc) so I don't have to hunt for them across multiple platforms and scenarios.

Updated to yesterday evening's new release. Again, we only need one note that a new version is posted and it will be addressed. It will show up as an invalid download due to the MD5 mismatch. This is for security reasons as we require a scan by us before passing along to you.

Results: sPortable 8.44.0.40 Dev Test 1 (portable launcher for Skype)
Application definitely writes to the Windows registry on any system on which it is run.
I didn't perform a full test, but I confirmed it writes to HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
Naturally, this causes Skype to run on every system boot, and it runs outside of the PortableApps Platform, so any post-close cleanup that is supposed to take place never happens.
Even when the registry key is manually deleted, Skype adds the registry key back into the registry whenever it is run. This takes place whether or not the app is run from within the PortableApps Platform.
In Win7, the current version writes files to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Skype for Desktop\

Yes, the current version posted still exhibits this issue.
In addition, it also created a folder "c:\users\[username]\appdata\local\temp\skype-preview Crashes" which contains a file "operation_log.txt". It also created a folder in the same location called "net-export".
Furthermore, before installing the new portable version, I deleted all traces of the existing Skype Portable that I could find, but Skype Portable still somehow knew my Skype login information after installing the latest version. So it's saving private data in even more places than I manually detected. I didn't perform comprehensive before-after system change scans because I didn't think it would be so intrusive. So if you install it and login, please perform before-after file system and registry change scans, and let me know which other areas of the file system and/or registry it modified. It's storing private login data somewhere.
Updated to 8.45.0.41. Haven't yet had a chance to test out the Run at startup issue in a VM.

The issue is still present in 8.45.0.41
The result is a Windows Registry modification.
The setting that controls this behavior is stored in settings.json, which is currently stored outside of the Portable Apps platform folders.
The desired setting is "app.autoStartEnabled":false . Probably also want "app.onCloseKeepRunning":false.
Update: I just discovered it also writes a URL Protocol registration to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\skype.
Skype has been updated to 8.46.0.60.

MS has released another new version of Skype. They are now up to 8.49.0.49.
The version included with sPortable is asking to upgrade on every launch, as it is only 8.45.0.41.

I'm Jacob (a.k.a. Black Winner Yoshi) and I'm trying to download every portable app from PortableApps.com, as well as make every possible app (i.e. freeware and especially open source apps) packaged to PortableApps.com Format.
Skype is an Electron based application.
Namely it is mainly HTML / JS code running in Chrome + V8.
An equivalent and identical version can be run using Chrome Portable running https://web.skype.com.
It is always the latest version and as far as I can tell has the same features as the Electron version.
I suggest to use https://preview.web.skype.com instead.
It's a better version which is even more identical.
While they call it a "preview", it has been around for a while and doesn't seem to ever become official.
They use to run the new UI only on the preview.
Currently the official version is also based on the new UI so there is no point in using the preview version.
It has run its course.
Should Skype (sPortable) be removed? It's so out of date, I don't think it can be working for anyone without running Microsoft's update tool, which likely makes it non-portable.
I'd like sPortable to kept if possible. I'm using 8.44.0.40, which still works for me.

Yes. 8.44.0.40 does have a Notification on the Notifications page offering an update to the latest version of Skype, but there's no obligation to update and 8.44.0.40 continues to run ok.
The installer downloads Skype twice and then throws an error:

installer.ini lists file for download URL as: Skype-8.29.0.50.exe
but

MD5 seems to be correct for Skype-8.45.0.41.exe
Updated to the current Skype release, rewrote the launcher and installer. Should be working correctly now but need to check portablization and upgraded from older 7 and 8 installs (which are moved to legacy directories).
