LibreCAD

LibreCAD Portable is an existing PortableApp based on LibreCAD Version 2.1.3 released on 23 Sep 2016. LibreCAD Version 2.2.0 Release Canidate 1 released on 16 Feb 2018, a minor version upgrade, is widely used and there may never be another V2 release.

I'd like to package it and the original package developer is no longer available. It appears to work by simply:

  • replacing the LibreCADPortable_2.1.3\App\LibreCAD folder with the one from C:\Program Files (x86)\LibreCAD
  • updating LibreCADPortable_2.2.0-rc1\App\AppInfo\appinfo.ini

I'd appreciate any comments including advice on how to repackage and make available for beta testing.

Pre-release

We don't normally update to pre-releases, we only do stable releases. And it's based on what the publisher makes available. I'm wondering if other LibreCAD users would like to chime in on whether we should make an exception in this case.

I cross-posted to https://forum.librecad.org/portable-version-of-LC-tp5712598p5718508.html for comment.

The https://portableapps.com/development info sucks. Fortunately, it is only a matter of downloading and running PortableApps.com Installer on the application directory to make the LibreCAD Portable 2.2.0-rc1 Beta Test Version.

Pre-release

I'm such an other LibreCAD user wanting to chime in. Long time user and also contributer. Sadly there hasn't been a new official release long since, though there has been much development. The rc releases are much improved and can be considered as stable as 2.1.3. It's a waste of effort not to learn and use the advanced version. I don't know what is the reason for the delay.
As the portable version makes it so easy and troublefree to test and use version 2.2.0 rc, it would be fine to have it available.
As for Linux users there are no nightly or rc builds available, it's also valuable for them, it works well with Wine.

Publisher

Talk to the publisher. They have 2.1.3 indicated as their official stable release. If they switch it to the 2.2.0 RC (which is labeled specifically as a Pre-Release) we'd update it.

We usually only do a TEST channel for apps that regularly release and would benefit from one. Testing extensions and sites in the Beta and Nightly versions of Firefox, for instance. Or where we work with the publisher directly. That's not really the case here.

Externally LibreCAD looks kinda like a dead app (stable release is over 3 years old, last unstable release is over 2 years old on an abandoned development branch) which is why you're likely not getting any interest from other users here.

Free hit given the emphasis is on the next major version. It stacks up pretty well against https://portableapps.com/ on just about any other metric: https://github.com/LibreCAD/LibreCAD_3/graphs/contributors

Users Don't Care

I said externally. End users don't really care about contributor metrics. I was offering a possible explanation as to why you don't see much interest here from other forum users. LibreCAD should really just set the RC as stable if it's more stable than current stable and then go from there. But I'm not here to discuss or argue their policies. If they switch it, we will. It's their call.

LibreCADPortable_2.2.0-rc

Thank you for your response.
As a stop-gap measure, can you imagine allowing LibreCAD to provide a portable recent rc version on it's own site, tinkered by using the portableapps version of LC 2.1.3 as a base, with a remark like "by courtesy of portableapps.com"?
Or is this no problem at all, as your site says your PortableApps.com Launcher is "Licensed for use with free open source and freeware"?
