VeraCrypt update from 1.25.9 to 1.26.7

After 1.5 years, Veracrypt was updated. But unbeknownst to many, I suspect, this new update removes TrueCrypt compatibility. See https://sourceforge.net/p/veracrypt/discussion/general/thread/263a8d11aa... . You either have to use the older 1.25.9 release you just replaced or possibly even go back to TrueCrypt 7.1a / 7.2. Both Veracrypt old version and Truecrypt last version are available (see below) but not here in PortableApps.

Some, like I, may have many old, archived volumes on backing store from up to 20+ years ago that still need to be occasionally accessed. Or maybe someone was caught unaware that they still had a TrueCrypt container and not Veracrypt. In either case, having the older version available would really help. Much like you have had KeePass 1 and 2 for many years, maybe keep the 1.25.9 Veracrypt around a bit or even resurrect the TrueCrypt 7.1a.

Note, even between versions of Veracrypt, you cannot run both at the same time or even one after the other without a reboot in between. The DLL they load is not versioned nor dated. And so only one version can exist in memory at a time. The only way to unload the DLL is by rebooting. The old TrueCrypt 7.1 Windows executable can be run at the same time as the newer Veracrypt though.

According to Veracrypt documentation, if you load a legacy TrueCrypt container in Veracrypt 1.25.9 and simply change the password on it, then the container will be updated to Veracrypt. But this does not work with the just released 1.26.7 or later. Only 1.25.9.

At minimum, a note on the download page would be helpful -- although I am not sure how many ever see it. That is why having the old and latest versions in the application list can help. Or maybe adding TrueCrypt back in with VeraCrypt to help others with this problem. Especially if the links to old versions that are there today do go away soon.

Still Available, Now More Conveniently

As VeraCrypt is open source, all releases are available via our SourceForge project. I wasn't aware of the change in 1.26. So, to make it more convenient, I've packaged a version as a separate channel from the main release. It'll install alongside VeraCrypt and not get updated to later versions to maintain TrueCrypt compatibility. It's available from the VeraCrypt Portable homepage and within the PA.c Platform.

Another big change with the new release

Thank you. I got tripped up on another problem as well:

1.26.7 Release Notes:
Complete removal of RIPEMD160 and GOST89 algorithms. Legacy volumes using any of them cannot be mounted by VeraCrypt anymore.

How to change hash algorithm if you already upgraded to 1.26 version.

I added the details to the app note to assist others.
