I recently updated Thunderbird from a fairly old version.
When I now run Thunderbird portable it does not use the saved passwords - it asks to reenter the email id and password.
Is this the expected behavior or have I messed up the update ?

A few years ago there was a big change to Gmail's authorization method but I can't remember exactly how long ago - if the version you upgraded from is older than that change, it could have something to do with that.
If nobody else has any better ideas for you it might be worth trying to re-add your account as a new one - the old profile might be trying to use the old auth method, but Thunderbird's Gmail integration may no longer be able to remember the credentials using the old auth method.
