My big respect to mwayne (Mike Wodarczyk) (re)starting to make KODI an PortableApp ! You didn't add this to your long list of Development Test Releases https://portableapps.com/node/39243 till now.
There was alredy a try from jpoul with "XBMC Portable 11.0 Dev Test 2 (2011-11-23)"
https://portableapps.com/node/29389
Also big discussions are on the official KODI-Forum "PortableApps.com USB Edition portable version of XBMC for Windows":
http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=33373&page=4
I hope the KODI-Developers are also finally interested to do a real PortableApp
I don't know it in detail but I know that (real) portable apps are much better because they don't touch the system (so much) or not at all. I'm not sure there. But one shoud only touch the system if there is no other way so the stability wont get afected. No idea why developers don't make only portable apps. They have more advantages, you can use them also on the way. I wish every developer would be so smart to make directly a portable app.
By one app I'm thinking if it is a portable app or not as it said that the exe file can also be used to use it portable but now it says that the 'Installed version can be launched in "portable" mode as well'. It's a bit wired. And I hope I don't confound it with another app.
I don't want to install the app.
What does it mean?
Can one not 'install' (open the archive) it as a portableapps app without installation?
Does anybody understand it / this?
Thanx!
i help where i can! help each other! be nice!
if you don't want to help, don't post crap!
Kodi does not start on my Win7-32bit with the meseage: ERROR: Unable to create application. Exiting.
Has it worked before? If yes backup your profiles.xml in Data/portable_data/userdata and delete it.
Yes it was the first run - it didn't worked from the beginning.
What does your Kodi.log in Data/portable_data say? Could be incompatible hardware or not update to date software.
Also first run on Win10-32bit with error: XBMC: Fatal Error / Uh oh, can't load sqlite3.dll, exiting.
Here https://we.tl/TS8Cbc9Ohh you can download from WeTranfer (only for 7 days) my KodiPortable-Data.zip
I was installing the "not portable" kodi-16.1-Jarvis.exe with type of install: "Minimal". After starting, the same error occurred - see above. Minimal does not install Microsoft Visual C++ packages 2008 + 2010 + 2013, which was not already on my laptop.
After installing kodi-16.1-Jarvis.exe with type of install: "Normal" and then immediately de-installing it, the Microsoft Visual C++ packages stayed on my laptop. And now Kodi-Portable starts without problems
On my WIN7-32bit PC, Microsoft Visual C++ packages 2013 was missing. So i downloaded vcredist_x86.exe from Microsoft and installed it. Now KodiPortable runs also here.
When click to open from PApps menu, a windows popup with tittle "XBMC: Fatal error" and message "Uh oh, can't load sqlite3.dll, exiting"
I have Kodi on my system and installed version runs without problem (downloaded from windows store). I checked and sqlite3.dll is not in the system but it's on PortableApps\KodiPortable\App\Kodi\system\python\DLLs path.
This is up to date Windows 10 on 1 Tb Hd, AMD A8, 8 Gb RAM system and PApps ar not in an external USB but in a second partition.
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
What version of Kodi have you installed? 16.1 aka “Jarvis” depends on VS2008, VS2010 and VS2013. 17.0 aka "Krypton" needs VS2015. If you have 17.0 installed, 16.1 won't work unless you install the missing Visual C++ Redistributable packages. See what Sandrito did a few posts above: https://portableapps.com/comment/229386#comment-229386
Maybe @John can help me include the missing VC runtime libraries to avoid errors.
I installed jarvis on my 64bit system and it runs with no problem. The one with problems is the portable version.
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
Then it installed the VC runtime libraries for 64-bit and not 32-bit which the portable version needs
Ok, thank you

So can u confirm if this work with a 64 bit? Do you just download the file onto a usb? And then what do u do?
As a reminder, the visual C libraries are separate for 32-bit vs 64-bit. So, if you installed Kodi 64-bit on your machine, it's possible the 32-bit portable version which is missing one of the 32-bit VC libraries bundled will fail. I install the app in a clean Win7 VM and then monitor what VC libraries it installs to determine what to bundle.
I don't have time to assist directly at the moment, too many apps to build and release.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Update base app + add VC runtime libraries
Is this a 32 bit or 64 bit. How exactly does this one work?
It's the 32-bit version. Run the KodiPortable.exe to launch it.
Is there A WALKTHROUGH FOR INSTALLING THIS ANYPLACE? i WOULD need the 64bit versions since all my computers are 64 bit
Kodi will run on 32-bit and 64-bit systems. That's the reason for doing a 32-bit only. You can install it wherever you want, e.g. C:\PortableApps\KodiPortable. Just start the above mentioned KodiPortable.exe.
Thanks for your great work, but it's not updated to the latest kodi version.
Here is the new version 17.1, portabilised by thumbapps.org and also a Kodi.tv fork named FreeTelly (based on Jarvis 16.1 and contains many addons)
Kodi Portable 17.1 Krypton
FreeTelly Portable (Kodi fork) 16.1 Jarvis
I have seen bugs with your version of Kodi Portable and also with thumbapps.org version when I use my USB 2.0 key but not with my USB 3.0, this is probably a speed issue, maybe...
Update base app
Works fine for me,installed ares wizard and build.Nice to try different builds etc when having normal kodi installed as well.Seperate versions basically.
should not delete the userdata. all my addons and db gone.
Sorry to hear. This is probably because it didn't exit properly and so the launcher couldn't do his job. I'll add to preserve this directory on install to prevent data loss in the future.
anyway - thx for doing this, kodi is a fine portable app!
Win 10 x64 Creators
Both 16 and 17.0 work fine confirmed not seen 17.1 till now,
Can also confirm Ports are working with my main Media Server EMBY with integrations via Emby with Kodi SYNC.
Never been fond of Kodi but the portable makes it much better now. Repos current work, iptv, streams not had a error
All of these are with FreeTelly Port as well
TY for doing this
Update base app + preserve portable_data
The app works great, however, after a week or so the app deletes addons and build configuration. It opens to a fresh copy of Kodi Portable 17.3. Is there a fix? Will you be releasing the final version? Version 17.1 had the same issues. Version 17.0 and Version 16.1 did not have this issue. Please advise.
Version 17.4 is released https://kodi.tv/article/kodi-v174-final-just-bunch-fixes
Also could you add please
to the
KodiPortable.ini
? I need it to write paths for some add-ons. ThanksUpdate base app

Firstly many thanks for your very welcome work with Kodi Portables. I was wondering if there is any chance of a Test Portable Version of Kodi 18. The latest nightly versions are very stable and far better than Kodi 17.5. Thanking you in advance.

So I know there is a way of upgrading Kodi without losing your configuration. Does anyone know which folders to move?
if i wanted to update from 17.5 to 17.6 , how would i go about doing that without losing my data/? many thx
You can make a copy of the portable_data folder in Data.
Kodi updated to 17.6 3 weeks ago but no new kodi portable update. are we to accept that this kodi portable project has ended

when the app is closing, the movement of portable_data folder taking a lot of time when you have a lot of ad-dons and other stuff, for me the folder is 1GB. and in cases just get deleted altogether!
maybe anther way of saving portable data is needed?
maybe use symlink as the way instead of moving the folder around.
as symlink is available since windows vista, and kodi 18.3 is for vista and up, i don't see any disadvantage.
I will disable the move with next release.
Update base app + deactivate moving portable_data
Caution: After an update install you need to copy the "portable_data" folder from Data to App/Kodi.
Fresh install is fine.
Old version folders:

There's no AppKodi folder created with the portable version.

Thanks for you work, use your builds on my work computer when traveling. Any plans to update to 18.5? Was really hoping to take advantage of some of the bug fixes in subtitles and PVR.
Thanks again!

Does not work. Unable to load any 19.1 builds. Says error when downloading wizard. Please advise.

Similar to 19.1 and 19.2. When I download my favorite kodi build it gives a wizard error.
This just works for me!
Edit: jo, it has dependencies and is not completely portable, but it does work as a portable for me in a sense of a "portable"
THX
I have done it myself - and tried in SyMenu, but doesnt work at all.
just get it done by itself by editing its config file.
thx
I know why kodi isnt to be liked here. its because of security and dependencies or how you would call it....
but if you are interested in international TV Stations, there is no other way around.
Get your K-Lite full Codec pack (perhaps in a VM) and a decent computer and you are done.
The whole World is attached at your ....
just use Potplayer.
https://github.com/jnk22/kodinerds-iptv
(is somehow german orientated) but works and has some international TV Stations....

I love this portable kodi app and use it frequently, however, I am stuck on 18.9 since I am unable to add any new builds on the 19 version. Has anyone had any success? Maybe, I am doing something wrong. Any help is appreciated!

Hello everyone,
Sorry to say this, but do not use this version of Kodi Portable. It is bad.
It contains old urllib files that are not part of Kodi 19 Matrix. These files prevent the new movie scraper Python for TMDb from working.
This fact is confirmed on the official Kodi forum by the scraper developer.
If you are using this version, you will have to migrate sooner or later to another better designed Kodi portable software, with all the work of redoing your settings, installing your extensions and migrating your media libraries.
You can easily find on the Web other better-made portable Kodi installations that work.
I would have warned you.
I don't like to criticize other people's work, but in this case it is necessary, because it caused me too much trouble.
And if I can save you from them, all the better.
Best regards.

This is probably just a side effect from preserving the App directory when you install new versions. So some old Kodi files getting preserved too and making trouble. If you want to try it out you can install a fresh copy to KodiPortable2 and copy over your portable_data folder to App/Kodi.
Hello everyone,
After having calmed down for four months, I made a clean installation attempt with Kodi Portable 20.1 DT1, then moving the Portable Data folder from my previous portable installation 19.4 to the App/Kodi folder of the new 20.1 DT1.
Then I update the TMDb Movies Python and TMDb TV Shows Python scrapers with ZIP files and Kodi Portable 20.1 DT1 was working properly.
So @mwayne, you were absolutely right with your analysis and advice.
Thank you very much for that.
Best regards.
Sorry again for your inconvenience.
As of Kodi 20.x onwards the App directory is no longer fully preserved to prevent weird behavior, only the portable_data folder.
Let me know if an upgrade from (19.x / 20) works for you.
Hello,
Copying and pasting only the portable_data folder from the old version to the new version as you advised worked perfectly to upgrade from 19.4 to 20.1 DT1.
So well that I'm thinking of adopting this way of upgrading in the future, rather than overwriting all the folders of the old version with the folders of the new version.
Sincerely and with my repeated thanks.
I don't see such a name: "portable_data" folder (no quotes) in 20.1
Additionally, there's another portable version on GH floating around: https://github.com/gek64/KodiPortable/releases
The portable Kodi versions aren't good for anything except IPTV as I mentioned in this post: https://portableapps.com/comment/253932#comment-253932
I would like to request if you can create a Kodi 20 RC file. It will be much appreciated. I love your work.
Update base app
I created an account to say thank you for your work. I also wanted to let you know that Kodi 20 has issues installing add-ons. I believe it is due to Kodi 20 being so new but figured letting you and others know would be pertinent.
No, there are no more issues with Kodi 20. Portable versions are the primary reason why you may have issues with installing or running add-ons. Virtually every major Kodi developer is now only supporting 20+ versions.
Update base app
So it looks like many add-ons like the Crew don't/work with Kodi portable. Some add-ons (like the Crew) also register as malware. Well, it's not the add-on themselves but some of their dependencies like Python, Crew likely doesn't work because it insists on writing itself into Windows\System.
In general., most add-ons don't work with the portable version. It seems Kodi is now only worthwhile as an IPTV client. I find it absurd how Kodi users are shelling out $4, 5 a month for a RD premiumize sub when they're giving up their privacy in doing so. A decent [premium] VPN can be had for less and it gives you protection not only your PC but other devices and in so many ways.
I suggest torrenting instead. Afterall, content from Kodi is always from torrents, p2p (mIRC), and binaries. There's no point in supporting companies like RD when they don't care about your privacy. And their user base don't seem to care either or they'd be using a VPN instead.
I don't know where you get your info from but in order to use VPN you give your details to company, a while ago surfshark got caught handing over customers details to authorities.
Secoundly not all addons use torrents, most have an option to disable torrents like mine.
Thirdly whilst my addon does not require Real Debrid the choice is there, it gives same secure connections as a VPN in that Real Debrid does the torrenting not the person requesting it.
Due to the fact they host most of the files requested when someone wanting to watch a movie its instant as they have the movie from a previous request.
Fourthly, a VPN is not going to get you a movie faster in kodi it will allow you to use torrents in kodi secure but you are at the mercy of how many seeders there are.
I am dead against RD and believe Kodi should be free and many addons have chosen the easy root using it, but on the other hand i have a RD account for the benefits of its access to stuff way easier and not time consuming in me having to download from seeders, i let RD do it and then download the file to another server for free.
Update base app
So i just updated from 20.1 version as my apps load but thats just about all they did.
So i see an update and install it, as i used portable kodi to test my apps local before making public.
Now the latest version installs zero, nada, diddly squat.
Not even youtube or resolveurl, jsbeautifier, streamspro.
This Portable is dead in the water.

Sounds nice thanx for the hint!
I will keep it in mind as it's not on the app list in the directory and I have to find some more important and x apps at the moment which for I started a thread for. Hints are welcomed.
Thanx for the great work to John T. Haller and all helping hands here, who make the portable apps possible and or help out by problems and questions!
Many thanx to the portableapps community!
