ClamWin version 0.90.1 errors

Hello Group;

I have just tried out the new ClamWin Portable. It tries to open up a temporary file and fails. From there on it just gives you error messages.

The message says invallid argument. It looks like it is trying to open a very long temporary file and the last item on the list has a "/" then invalid argument.

I would give you the entire line but it does not save the errors to the log file.

It all so does a lot of writing to my USB drive. Version "88.7" does not. So I am back to useing it.

this is just and information post not a flame.

Rev 2

Did you grab rev 2 or the original package. The original package had an error but was only up for about 12 minutes.

And, as usual... details. Details, details, details. Exact error message. Windows version. Install location. Original install or in-place upgrade. Etc.

It's something specific to your install as I have ClamWin Portable 0.90.1 scanning a drive as I type this.

Sorry

Hello John;

The error is with the original package. I am using it on a Windows 200 pro PC.

The package was installed on a USB drive along with my portable apps.

The error message was very hard to read with my very bad eyes. It was trying to open a very large temporary file and the end of the error said ivalid argument.

The error message was not part of the log file.

I will try out "rev2" shortly

Rev 2 Errors

Hello John;

I did try "rev 2". I get the same type of error.

It is installed on to my USB drive. The PC I am using is running Windows 2000 Pro. I am trying to scan my USB drive.

The error I get is:

LibClamAV ERROR failed to create file

C:\docume~1\fhubeny\locals~1\temp/clamav xxxxclamtmp/_delaa xxx (invalid Argument)

The "XXX" are a long alphanumeric list.

As before When reverting back to your version "0.88.7" I do not have these errors. All so there is a lot of writeing to my USB. This does not occur in "0.88.7"

Hope this helps.

Upgrade or no, install location

Again, original install or in-place upgrade. And what path is it installed to on your USB drive.

Hello John; Sorry again. I

Hello John;

Sorry again.

I did a new install of ClamAVPortable version 0.90.1 rev2.

The path on my USB drive is:

\clamavportable

I just copy the entire extracted directory on to my USB, after I remove the old one.

This error seems to appear when trying to scan either openoffice or firefox on my USB Drive. Both are your portable versions.

Another issue with 0.90.1

I've been using ClamWin Portable for quite a while now. I scheduled clamscan.exe to scan my drive on a daily basis with these parameters:

--bell --database="%pdrive%\PortableApps\ClamWinPortable\Data\db" --recursive %pdrive% --log=%pdrive%\ClamWin.log

That stopped working with 0.90, so I searched the forums and found a similar problem. Placing ClamWinPortable.ini in CWP's root folder solved my issue, but this bug seems still present in 0.90.1 rev 2.

Update is fixed

Actually, the daily update issue was fixed within ClamWin itself in 0.90.1. Not sure why your other setup isn't working anymore. Could be a related issue.

John,

John,

In reguards to:

"LibClamAV ERROR failed to create file
C:\docume~1\fhubeny\locals~1\temp/clamav xxxxclamtmp/_delaa xxx ..."

I have seen something similar as far back as the early releases. 88.something.
It usually repeats several times.

I don't know if it occurs in the latest version as I would need to test it and it takes forever.

I have always assumed it was a ClamWin thing and not a CWP thing. I still think it is.

When it happens it is "always" when scanning c:\Windows .
It seems to involve writing a log file of some sort.

The scan always finishes fine and the errors are cleared off the screen.

Edit: Yes, it is still occuring, and is when scannning the c:\windows directory.
Still think it might be a ClamAV vs. ClamWin thing more than a ClamWinPortable thing.

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?

Oops...

I tried to recreate the error by deleting ClamWinPortable.ini from CWP's root folder. I was surprised to still see clamscan.exe working.

Turns out there was a bug in my script. The database should have been updated before the scan, but actually was after. Both 0.90 and 0.90.1 were clean new-installs, so on first run the db was missing. Each time afterwards I put the .ini there.

The second run was always ok, as the db was already there, but I assumed that it was the .ini that solved the problem.

Sorry, false alarm Smile

Same error with offical version installed

Hello Group;

I posted a message to the ClamAV group. The result was that I downloaded and installed there offical version on to my PC.

I get the same error when I try to scan my USB Drive as I posted above. I let them know this just a short time ago.

So I assume it is a ClamAV thing.

If you look at my error message should the two "/" not be "\". I am not a programer but it does not look the same as the rest of the line.

"LibClamAV ERROR failed to create file
C:\docume~1\fhubeny\locals~1\temp/clamav xxxxclamtmp/_delaa xxx ..."

I do not get this useing version "0.88.7'.

Found Problem

Hello Group;

I found the problem. I have a very large "msi" file that the latest ClamWin does not like.

I will send it to ClamAV. They feel it may be a file renameing problem.

Since it is a archive could I add it to my exclude file "*.msi".

Possible Solution

Hello Group;

I found the file that was giving me my error. I got the type of error from both the offical and the portable version. It was a "msi" installer for a comercial AV program that I purchase for my home PC.

I found that if I zip the entire file both versions of ClamAV worked on it according to the pop up window you get. They both proccessed the file some how and reported that the file was scaned by ClamAV. I did not rename the file I only zipped it.

Hope that helps any one else haveing the same type of error. It took forever to find. It all so did the same thing when I moved the file to a separate directory on my PC and scanned it with both versions.

I did not get this error when I used CalmAV version "0.88.7". I will let you know what I hear from ClamAV.

,msi scan errors

I have the same problem with newer .msi files. \setup\owc11.msi from MS SQL Server 2005 ENT would be an example. What's interesting is that WinRAR 3.51 won't open this file. Older .msi files work fine with ClamWin and WinRAR.

So it appears something has changed with .msi files.

I'd post the log, but the error messages doesn't show up in it, just the final OK/Infected result.

While you're at it, it would be nice if the error messages on screen didn't run over other stuff - there'e a missing \n after the error msg.

I'll zip up owc11.msi and send it to you when I find the email addr I saw somewhere.

FYI - I saw someone in another post on this subject wanting to skip scanning .msi files. These are effectively executable files, and a crafty virus writer could put some bad stuff in one, so scan them.

Hello Mr.Nobody ClamAV

Hello Mr.Nobody

ClamAV posted a reply saying some ".msi" files are not being unpacked correctly and then given a incorrect name by ClamAV.

They still have not posted a link to where I can send my file. ClamAV says it is possibly only a Windows problem. They all so said that the "9x" versions are useing something new to unpack "msi" file.
