Thanks in advance,

Partition

I am assuming that you are talking about a thumb drive and not an external hard drive. The manufacturer of the thumb drive should have software available. The Tools in Win XP will let you make one big drive.
HP has software that will work with most drives:

Hello !

Thanks for the replies. Smile

@ Jerseyjoe : seems the HP soft is only for HP thumb drives right?
i have a Dan Elec 256 megas thumb drive.

@ Rob Loach : i'd like to partition this usb thumb drive in order to set up an encrypted partition with True Crypt instead of using an encrypted file container. Wink

HP's tool states on the download page that it is for use with only hp devices, however, it can be used for any usb device. the only thing it will not do is create a boot usb from the application itself, you have to tell it where to get the boot files. I use it every day for formating and such on various usb drives. But I never tried to partition one. I will have to try it and see it it works that way and get back to you.

Encrypted partition with Dekart PDL

Hi!

You can use encrypted Virtual Drive with the free Dekart Private disk light.

Hello ! Thanx 4 this advice

Hello !

Thanx 4 this advice but this soft is free and unsecure or you have to pay to get it more secure but still 256bits encryption ... nothing better than the 3*256bits encryption in True Crypt. Wink

It is an interesting

It is an interesting thought. I do know for a fact (seen it done) that there is commercial software available with this ability. Dad installed PartionMagic 8.0.0.0, and purportedly it can do it, though I have yet to try it out like that. Seeing as I prefer freeware apps, though, I downloaded Swissknife Partitioning Tool (non-portable Sad , a girl can wish, right?) for the very purpose you described. I plan on testing it in the next few days, and I'll post results. (Now where is that key fob...) As to why you would want to, I have a hunch that it would be possible to create an emulated CD drive like the ones U3 have emplemented. I haven't quite made the connections in my head yet as to how I can do this, or at least determine the idea is a failure, but I suspect that it can be done. It would simplify (the hard way :D) my autorun problems. Wink

There is no simple way

You need to update the firmware within the drive itself, which is far more complicated than repartitioning.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

It doesn't matter

Partitioning it won't do anything to help it autorun. That was my point.

though there is ways to do this...

IIt's just a matter of finding or creating the proper software. I have a (proprietary and confidential, which is why I cannot post it here) utility that can REMOVE U3 from a drive by editing the firmware directly, so we know it can be done (at least with u3 enabled devices). It's just a matter of determining how to get it to go the other way. If anyone has or knows anyting about this, let us know, maybe we can piece together a partitioning utility

John: Thank you for the info.

Blacksheep: Why exactly can't you do it? Can your software see the drive? Will it not write to it? Mabey it reports the drive is too small? Do you get any error messeges? Etc....

my 2 cents

I'm also interested in this idea, but I take it that the final answer is: possible but not practical. Right?
