GIMP: When's 2.3.x coming?

How soon will it be before a 2.3.x version of GIMP Portable is ready? I really want to try the new Foreground Extraction Tool.

Unstable

The 2.3.x branch is the unstable branch. The 2.2.x is the stable branch. Once 2.3 is polished and ready, it becomes 2.4, which is the next stable branch. Quite a few open source projects work this way.

That said, if you're so inclined, I think you can delete the contents of GIMPPortable\App\gimp and copy Gimp 2.3 right in and it'll work. I should try that.

So?

Hello.

So will you be porting GIMP 2.4 into the PortableApps version?

I'd definitely like to see an update to GIMP when version 2.4 comes out.

Thank you.

Of course, why wouldn't I. But IT'S NOT OUT YET.

Hello.

Alright. I thought you would but I was just making sure.

Thank you.

It works, sort of.....

I installed the latest 2.3.14 unstable branch and added ufraw for processing RAW images. Then I deleted the contents of GIMPPortable\App\gimp and copied Gimp 2.3 from the normal install as John suggested. After renaming gimp-2.3.exe to gimp-2.2.exe it works. Guess I could have recompiled the launcher but this worked for me. Haven't played with it much so I can't comment on the stability. Gimp2.3.11 was quite stable.

Be aware, Gimp 2.3.x is huge. Somewhere around 260MB, so make sure you have the space before playing around with it. The plugins directory is 166MB alone. Compressing the exe and dll files will reduce it somewhat, but it will still be a lot larger that gimp2.2.x

Debug

It think because it's compiled with lots of extra debug stuff to assist with testing. Since it's an unstable branch not intended for production use, this would make sense. Lots of apps due that.
