TabPad

This is a very good Notepad clone with tabs. It's small too at >200 KB. Leaves no registry entries and is open source!

(go to the bottom and click "Download EXE". Just extract it from the ZIP file and run!)

Alternatives

I like Notepad++ and PSPad more. Both are portable.

I used to have N++ and PSPad

I used to have N++ and PSPad on my USB drive, but I prefer Notepad2 (flos-freeware.ch). It isn't portable, but a BAT registry wrapper makes it run fine -- and I'm perfectly OK with the default settings, so I don't even need that.

Notepad++ is portable (as of 3.3)

As of version 3.3, Notepad++ has the "capacity to keep all the configuration files in Notepad++ installed location."
