I'm not sure if this has been posted before (there really should be a search box), but I have a handful of fonts that I would like to be able to carry around with my portable apps (Hoefler Text and Gentium to name a couple). Is there anyway that this can be done so that fonts that I have on my flash drive can be used by portable apps in addition with the fonts installed on the computer?

this is for-what-its-worth, but maybe you can use this trick till something better comes along.
You can have fonts in a folder, double-click to open font(s) in the windows font-viewer, and those open fonts will be available to many applications for as long as the fonts are open. (OpenOffice.org, for one, MS Office, lots more.)
You can format your document with your favorite font and print it out with that.
But the next time you open the document, if you don't have the font open, Windows will substitute a system font to replace it. While the document is open, the name of the font you used appears in the font-selection list even if you don't have the font open.
Some applications let you embed fonts in a document, but that increases file size.
I have a batch of favorite fonts I use this way between home and work.
I've been looking for a way to do this. I have to say, your way is quite straight forward, it's the KISS principle. However, I found a program that can do all fonts at once, it's freeware and portable (I'm pretty sure it does not write to the reg)
Called NexusFont.
It does a couple of useful things, including displaying all installed system fonts; but you can also select a folder on your flash that contains fonts, and it will display them.
At that point, all these fonts are available as if you opened them in windows font-viewer as you described.
Drawbacks:
The web site, help files and the latest version are in Korean!
However, version 1.5 is in English.

The installer is just a RAR extractor, point it where you want to go.

GIMP Portable has folder you can use to carry fonts with you. All the fonts in that folder as well as those in the standard font directory for the system will be available.

I have GIMP portable, and would like to know how to add fonts to that app. GIMP Fonts folder does not list TTF or FON files.
How do you add fonts to GIMP folder, and how do you access them once you have them added?
Do you need to have GIMP open to use its fonts for other applications?

Because it doesn't use TTF or FON fonts. Try addiing them and if it doesn't work - you'll have to convert them.

and of course, also have to investigate how my other applications can access fonts in the GIMP folder if they are not TTF or FON format.
Some days, I end up learning more than I had planned on.....

GIMP supports TTF and FON. In fact, every single font in my %fontsdir% is in one of those formats, and they all show.

The first thing I must say is I do not know GIMP at all and downloaded it from this site. Now, sadly, I find that the GIMP Help files are not part of the package, so I will go get those from SourceForge or somewhere.
I have two fonts folders -
F:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\share\libwmf\fonts
which has AFM and PFB fonts
and
F:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\App\gtk\etc\fonts
which has two conf configuration files.
Do I need to modify fontmap xml document and/or the conf files to get GIMP to see TTF fonts in its own folders?
Golly, how did this turn out to be so complicated?
Have mercy on a newbie, I know once it is explained I will wonder how I could have failed to understand.

John, does the launcher fix the font-path path in gimprc? If not, would you include that feature in the next release of the launcher?

Not positive but being that a font install is just copying the file to the *\Windows\Fonts dir and a registry entry, I think someone could write a batch file to install them and another to remove them.
on any given host computer.
At my work computer, I don't have admin privileges, and cannot copy or install fonts to the Windows Fonts folder, so that is why I end up using the little workaround with opening fonts in memory in order to use them.
If anyone knows of a way around the privileges / group policy block, I would love to know about it, would be much simpler in some ways.
