Mines-Perfect Portable 1.4 Pre-Release (Minesweeper w/ extras)

Final version released, locking topic.
https://portableapps.com/apps/games/mines-perfect_portable

This one is just a quickie... I happened to stumble across it. Remember playing minesweeper back in the day on older versions of Windows? Minesweeper is still there, but it's the same game as it always was, so most folks don't play it much anymore. Enter Mines-Perfect. It is faithful to the original but adds some new twists. There are three new boards: Hexagon, Triangle and 3d Grid. There's also some fun options: Murphy's Law (any square you guess on that might contain a bomb will), Luck Mode (opposite of Murphy's Law), Immunity (mines don't hurt you). You can even save games.

It's got the usual features of the other apps (split app/data directories, live CD support) and it's only 780KB installed.

There is one bug in the package: Documentation from the Help menu doesn't work correctly, at least with Firefox as your default browser. It's linked from the help.html file in the base directory, though.

I'm debating this as a released app and would appreciate some thoughts.

Nice game

I gave it a quick try and it seems good, haven't found any problem. Thanks for the game, would post here if found any problem.

That's pretty cool,

That's pretty cool, considering it looks just like the normal minesweeper on the original board.

Edit: After spending more time playing around with it, I really like it. Biggrin

Excellent!

I've been looking for more portable games as many Windows Machines in a shared, corporate environment have had the default Windows games removed. I think this is a great port and would make an excellent addition to the Portable Apps suite.

Well

Maybe because it doesn't exist? Wink
I wonder what URL it tries to open... Probably F:\Blah\Help.html

AVG detects a downloader.Zlob.DJW, and then moves it to Safe Virus Vault.
do i have to worry about that? or just ignore it?

Thanks for another app!

Search

Search... search... search... for the love of god search first.

This is the fourth post about this in the last couple hours. It's AVG. It's a false positive. Please ask them to fix it.

I'm really starting to HATE these free antivirus programs.

...

Just mentioning boss that it is not JUST the free programs out there that do it. I hear all the time on another project that I follow and try to help on in which McAfee and Norton get false positives all the time on a Key Finder that simply displays the CD Key of M$ apps installed. Since it is a grey item, it gets flagged all the time. Like I mentioned in one of the other threads about AVG, I have used it for about 6 years now and this was the first time I came up with a false positive.

I agree though that when this happens and is posted as a sticky that it gets VERY annoying. I fight that fire with several other people every time there is an update to the AV companys and certain componants get flagged again and everyone says that we distribute a virus...

Help file bug

John,

I'm not running firefox as my default browser, but I've still got the 'help file bug'. I fixed it by placing a copy of the release help file in Data\settings\help\html.html. Does this fix the problem you had?

regards,
Peter

Boards and Sounds don't work by default

Apparantly Mines-Perfect uses the current directory when figuring out where to look for custom boards and sounds.

Currently custom boards are included in Mines-Portable under App\Mines-Perfect\boards. They do not work here, unless mineperf.exe is run directly. Since the launcher seems to use Data\settings as the current directory when running mineperf, it will only pick up on boards located in Data\settings\boards.

This also applies to the "help" directory, although the menu option for help seems to be broken if you have Firefox set up to handle HTML files (Mine-Perfect author needs to use backward slashes instead of forward for paths?).

Short version: Move App\Mines-Perfect\boards to Data\settings\boards, and App\Mines-Perfect\help to Data\settings\help. Might also want to move the log directory too.

Also, I was at first surprised you didn't include the sounds (in Data\settings\sounds, again). At least until I heard them, lol. At least the explosion one is good... someone should make a good sound pack to include.

IMO this is a very worthy addition to the small Portable Games category. Smile

Works Great!

Hey, I've had your program for about 1 and 1/2 weeks now, and I've been addicted to it ever since. Nice interface, like the original minesweeper, but yet, you get cool features like the triangle and 3D boards to play on, which add a brand new depth to the game!

The program it self works great on all 3 of my computers (2 Laptops, 1 Desktop) at my house, and even the computers at my school, no glitches or anything! (all tested on XP SP2 and XP SP2 - Limited Accounts)

Keep up the good work!

Great Game

Great Game, however I am unable to get the game to load in "Original" mode, I edited the mineperf.ini file to set all modes to off, then set "Original" to on, but when I load the app, the ini file is rewritten to its original config. This is definately better than Windows Minesweeper

Good Work

Which mineperf.ini?

Be sure you're editing the one in data\settings.

Alright I got it working...all I had to do was run the app, uncheck MurphysLaw, check Original, then exit, and the app will automatically edit the ini file to the correct settings.

Excellent

This variation is quite cool, I love the new modes and the hex/triangle/3d stuff.

However I miss the feature that allowed you to automatically free squares around the current one if it was already 'full' when you pressed both buttons.

left click works this feature and right click assigns flags if it is apparent where the flags go

Love it

I like mines and its a shame I didn't discover the potable version earlier. It leaves nothing behind and should be included into the official Applist.

As mentioned in the original post, there is a bug cause the Help->Content button expects a help.html in the /Data/settings/help folder. But after manually copying the help.html from the root folder to the /Data/settings/help folder, it opened by clicking the menu.

So now everything works.

I think this game is great

I think this game is great and should be included in the offical app list (since there is only one game in there to begin with).

Seems to work fine. Not sure if this is still in development but I'd like to see it. Only think that I don't like is the ugly Windows 98 icon. Lol.

Yippee!

Topic's not locked.

John, you told me earlier about how you can't really change the icon for Command Prompt Portable to the tango one because it's not GPL. I found an icon in vertigosity's Super Turbo Tango Patcher that was used to patch Windows Mine Sweeper to a tango style icon. I thought the icon would be Creative Commons, but I just discovered it's actually GPL, because it was made by someone else.

The icon is very nice, and would look MUCH better in the Mines-Perfect splash, and homepage, if not even the Launcher than the original. It's under the GPL, so it should be fine to incorparate with your launcher, and I notice that you used a different image for the Sudoku splash, so why not this, the icon with many great sizes can be found on this page, just ctrl+f "GPL" and look for Download GPL ICOs (358KB).

Here's a direct download. It's a small package as well, the file's under "November 2006 Icons\gnome-games".

Nice eh? Smile
