MPlayer Portable 1.0 RC1 Pre-Release 1

Final version released. Topic locked.
https://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/mplayer_portable

I had mentioned this one a long time ago and realized I'd never posted it for testing. When I was using MPlayer to play a file the other day, I figured I'd throw it over the wall for people.

MPlayer Portable is the MPlayer movie player packaged with the MPUI frontend for Windows. It's an easy to use, self-contained movie player that plays most common formats. It's under 5MB to download and under 8MB installed. And it's in PortableApps.com Format with a PortableApps.com Installer.

I decided to use the MPUI frontend rather than the graphical one posted by the MPlayer folks as it seems more stable with viewer visual issues. And the integrated MPUI interface is more user friendly than the awkward controls vs viewing window setup of GMPlayer. I'd appreciate other thoughts on this, though.

Please give it a try and post any feedback.

Download MPlayer Portable 1.0 RC1 Pre-Release 1

Functionality Note: Click SAVE to save your settings changes (languages, etc) within the Options window. Clicking OK will only close the dialog box. And if you want to change the language permanently, you need to change it in the options window, not using the Language selector in the menu.

Cool.

Mine doesn't save its settings.
First, I have an empty setting folder, and second it doesn't keep the language changes.
Can someone confirm that???

OK thanks

Must have overlooked that.
The language setting isn't saved but thats a minor problem and not an issue of the portable version. Its MPUIs problem.

Great, language settings problems

Works great. I don't see anything left behind. And to confirm Simeon's observation, yes, it doesn't keep the language settings.

Click Save

Unless you click save, it won't save. OK doesn't save. It's odd.

Sidenote to John:

It doesn't save the language (so maybe don't use the language as an example for settings).

Yes, it does

But you have to go into Options and change language from AutoSelect to the language of your choice and then click Save. The menu option for switching language is for the current session only.

Even though I liked MPlayer

Even though I liked MPlayer I now use KMPlayer instead.

http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/index.php

True, it is a much larger program but since this is no problem anymore (considering todays sticks sizes) and especially since it includes most codecs among the players I came across, I prefer it nowadays.

I do not want to have several players on my stick but just one being capable to play almost everything I may want to (incl. RealMedia, QuickTime etc. pp).

Maybe one of the latest betas would be worth a try for PAS?

Not Related

Despite the name... KMPlayer is completely unrelated to MPlayer.

MPlayer is a Free, cross platform, open source player that's been around forever and is available in lots of languages and has an active team of developers all over the world.

KMPlayer is a relatively new, closed source player that's available in 4 languages. I'm not sure how many people develop for it. And, since it's closed source, it could stop being made at any point in time and no one can pick up where it left off. It also requires DirectX 9 to be installed on every machine you run it on or it won't work.

UPDATE: And it's apparently violating the GPL, so KMPlayer should definitely be avoided.

well, MPlayer 1.0rc1 is a little ancient

Perhaps I could persuade you to use an svn build of mplayer instead? The version release has several standing bugs that are fixed in svn.

And if you're not willing to update mplayer, can I take any old mplayer build and replace mplayer.exe with it?

You can replace it

Daily builds are not suitable for general release as they vary in quality greatly. It's a bit disappointing that the MPlayer folks won't do an RC2 or something. SVN builds are not appropriate for normal users.

MPP vs VLCP

For those of us not in the know (and that means me)

What would be the main differences between MPP and VLCP?

I think I mean this more from a formats you can play point of view. Does one or the other play an important/major/common format that the other does not.

I just tried MPP rc and think I like the interface better than VLCP but in the end I would probably want to use the one that could play the most things.

Thanks,
Tim

MPlayer Portable uses

MPlayer Portable uses MPlayer (mplayerhq.hu) to play video. VLC Portable uses VLC (videolan.org) to play video. Each one has advantages and disadvantages to it.

MPlayer can decode MPEG-4 H.264/AVC video much better than VLC and has much much much better support for SSA/ASS format subtitles (you probably only care if you watch anime).

VLC can play/seek broken files slightly better than MPlayer can. Also, you can use it to stream video.

I did a little bit of testing. It seems ok. I didn't try too hard, but I didn't manage to get it to crash.

I want to congratulate you on your choice of front end. It looks like money. I've seen very few Hi-Contrast UIs that look good.

[EDIT] Possible minor bug: If the MPlayer window is close to the bottom of the screen, the menus pop up over the menu bar, making it impossible to click several menu items (Tools, Help, etc.) A single click outside the menu closes it and makes it possible to open another menu item. This may be an issue with the frontend and not with your program, but I thought I'd throw it out.

Can Play CDs ???

MPP1.0 RC1 Pre-Release 1 does not seem to recognize the Music CD in either my CD drive or my DVD drive at work.

I did not have a DVD to test with.

There is a menu control for CD/DVD so I figured it could play them (perhaps I am misinterpreting the menu control, maybe it means go to the CD/DVD to look for something else?)

If this is already known sorry for bringing it up. I did not see it mentioned above. If it's not known I thought I should mention it.

Okay,

so you are saying that it should play music CDs and DVD movies but that there might be a problem in my particular situation, is this correct?

what he's saying is...

MPlayer works like this. There's MPlayer (which plays files). This is a command-line application. MPui is the user interface that you see when you start MPlayerPortable. It's a seperate program, and all it does is to pass commands to MPlayer. Then, there's John's launcher which makes the whole enchilada portable.

So what he meant was this: MPlayer plays CDs. In fact, MPlayer will play pretty much anything (with a few exceptions). So it's not MPlayer. All John's launcher does is start the program and keep things running portably. So whether a CD plays or not shouldn't be affected by John's launcher. Therefore, the problem must lie with MPui. Somehow, it's not telling MPlayer to play your CD.

Unfortunately, this is a problem that PA.com can't help you with; you need to talk to the people who develop MPui.

BTW, is the o at the end of the bunny the tail, or a typo?

So MPP should play CDs (and I guess DVD).
I will try it on another machine when I get a chance.

Right. The problem probably

Right. The problem probably isn't with a specific computer, but with MPui. You could try MPP on a different computer and see what happens. I haven't looked into whether this is easy or hard, but if the problem happens on other computers. and if it isn't too hard to do, what you might try is to make your own MPP with a different GUI program (NOT MPui) and see if you can play CDs with that. However, as John mentioned, you might find that a different GUI plays CDs just fine, but locks     your system if you do something else. Basically, it's a tradeoff.

UPX .so files

I'm not sure if the .so files in ..\App\mplayer\mplayer\vidix are used at all by the Windows version of MPlayer (they're Linux "shared object" files). Since they're included in the download for some reason, they can be compressed by UPX to half their size saving another 1 MB of space.

This Mplayer thing works great. doesn't seem to have a huge problems. except that is makes vista switch to basic theme 'cause mplayer isn't compatible with aero.

This is a perfect portable version of MPlayer! Bring it out of beta and add it to the list of portable apps.

Comments about mplayer portable

Good software and it's working fine. At first impression mplayer seems much better than vcl player that uses a lot of ram and crash frequently on my system. (i was playing an mp3 and its proccess was using 60~ of ram) anyone can confirm this?
just missed some settings on the mplayer like display adjust (brightness, gama, color, etc) when watching a movie file

Overall works good

Overall the program works good.

Did notice one thing minor thing though.

When I was watching files the elaps time in the bottom right hand corner doesn't count down.

So far I've only noticed this with wmv files. Mpg files don't seem to display the length of the clip or the elapsed time.

AFAIK

Thats an issue of the original version and has nothing to do with the Portable version.
So you would have to ask the developers (http://www.mplayerhq.hu).

Thanks for the info

I've never used MPlayer before this one, so I didn't realise it was an issue with that one over this one.

Thanks for letting me know.

Might be useful to mention this as a known issue at the beginning of the post to try and reduce the number of repeat postings from newbies like me

My Thoughts (Good & Bad)

I've given MPlayer a good throw down with a little stress-test & here's my findings...

MPlayer was able to handle practically all video formats I threw at it. What's even more impressive is that it was able to play all the videos smoothly (no noticable drops in framerate) & without any A/V asynchronization, regardless on the processor speed as I tested it on a 800 Mhz & a 2.8 Ghz system. There were only 2 video formats that didn't work.

* NSV Video stream (online) -- Had Audio, but No Video (known issue with the program & one codec)
* DVD Video -- Refused to acknowledge the disc.

The only major issue I had with MPlayer is that it barely works on Pre-XP systems. All the buttons & commands, except for Play & Stop, work & it takes a few tries to get the file to stop (about 2-3 tries). However, this is likely a known issue within the program as there's a warning message before it tries to open the first file you selected.

Besides that, it's a pretty good alternative to VLC!
