PortableApps Menu Alternative ?

Hello all

I was sorry to see that there is still no update to the PortableApps Menu app. At this point i wish to ask if there is any other app with similar functionality that one might try.

Also, i can only wonder about the future of this project. Without any doubt, John's work is a life-saver. Yet, the fact that applications are not being updated in a predictable manner leads to fears.

Would John care to clarify on the project's status?

The most current version

is in beta, a release for it could be next week or next month or next year. It depends on when he gets time to update the program. Still, having a menu with alot of available programs, and with only a very small team of programmers...that's fairly amazing...

Oh, and about PAM alternatives...

Getting smart?

Unless you are on the programming team, in which case you are also responsible, i suggest that you don't get smart with me kiddo. Your "next week, next month, next year" blabbers, is the shame of most of the open-source community. Think about it before you start typing again or before the next time you refer to Microsoft's or Apple's policies.

Again, if the project manager cares to comment, we are all ears.

I am very sorry that I offended you.

I was only making a point that the next PAM will be released when it is finished. I am sorry.

Excuse Me?

Excuse Me?

roamer just gave much of what you were looking for in your original post. He told you, the project could be released in the next month or next week or next year which is precisely right, considering the next release could be released whenever, as John T. Haller is a very busy man that is generous enough to take a large portion of his time to contribute largely to society, bust providing free, open source applications as well as the PortableApps Menu. He makes no money except for a few donations here and their for his work. He has to pay probably a very large increasing price for this website, and it's growing forums. He also has to continue maintaining a steady income through his other work.

He himself has told us all a few months back, a new beta version of the menu would be coming within a week. And it hasn't, I have absolutely no problem with this as he probably has been busy, or is adding even more features people are requesting to the menu. So I believe quite roamer is quite right with his statement "next week or next month or next year". Since as far as many or us know, John Haller is the only person currently running, creating and maintaining all of these portable applications.

Also, you asked for an alternative to the PortableApps Menu, roamer have you three, and told you if you search for more, you will find more.

In absoluty no way is it anyones fault that this project is moving quick enough for you.

The applications are not being updated in a predictable manner?

Jun 19 GIMP Portable 2.2.15
Jun 12 PuTTY Portable 0.60
May 31 Mozilla Firefox, PE 2.0.0.4
May 30 ClamWin Portable 0.90.2.1
May 09 ClamWin Portable 0.90.2
May 07 FileZilla Portable 2.2.32
May 03 VLC Media Player Portable 0.8.6b
May 03 Sumatra PDF Portable 0.6
Apr 16 KeePass Portable 1.07
Apr 11 ClamWin Portable 0.90.1.1
Apr 09 Mozilla Thunderbird, PE 2.0 RC1
Apr 03 Mozilla Firefox, PE 2.0.0.3

I think not, considering you have no idea when John is working on new Portable Apps, and think how much work it is, he has to spend a large amount of time planning out what us users would like to have in that portable application, then he has to write a very complex and long script, which takes much thought and planning, he has to know where all the settings are stored on the computer. He has to make splash screens, he has to contact authors, upload the applications, put the through beta testing, he has to maintain this site, he has to pay for it all he has to deal with hundreds of e-mails, and nonsense like this in the forums, oh, and I forgot, he has to have A LIFE.

Wouldn't that be nice, a life.

So back off buddy, you got what you asked for, John's not making any money off this project, and it's hard work.

So either start contributing or stop talking.

Thank you.

Who asked you?

Or roamer for that matter? Your oppinion on the reasons that mr. Haller postpones some of the versions, is no question for you but for mr. Haller, should he choose to comment. Roamer (or you) should restrict to answering my question, as others did. Your self-proclaimed role of an attorney is useless to this conversation, so its -> you

I believe.

You can be quite assured the project is alive and well as the rate the applications are coming out on the main page, as well as the beta forums.

Updated and new applications came out on the 19th, and the 12th, and the 31st, and the 30th, and the 9th, and the 7th, and the 3rd, I believe you can be quite assured this project is not dead considering Mr Haller also just released MPlayer Portable in the beta forums just over a week ago.

It's rare that John will shed light on a situation like this when the answer is so obvious, and it has also been given to you.

Email

If you don't want to read the answers that other people give you then how about you don't post a question in an open forum and instead email the developer. This way you'll get a response directly from the person who is doing the menu.... in about 6 months or so.

Protocol, roamer gave you

Protocol, roamer gave you exactly what you asked for, and as much information as possible on the release date, to quote Mr. Haller, the author of PAM, "It'll be ready when it's ready". That is typically his response to all questions regarding release dates.

I can understand not being happy with this lack of info, or hoping you can get more info from John directly. If you want a direct line to John, and a very slim possibility of more information, you could e-mail him, although getting a response is highly unlikely since:
1. your question was already answered here in the forums
2. John is more focused on creating portable apps that work properly, than on updating the menu
3. John is trying to set up a freeware server, so that apps that are free but not open-source can be posted, and because of this has several licensing negotiations in the works, most of which are worked out through e-mail.
4. He has over 700 unread e-mails (or at least he did when he made this post https://portableapps.com/node/7347#comment-37733)

If you search the forums,

If you search the forums, there is a PAM MOD, a C++ version, and a VB6 version all have additional functionality.

.

The site is well under development. John is constantly releasing/working-on new apps for the site and currently is working on at least 10 more apps.
The next version of the menu will be coming soon, depending on how much time John has to spend on it. There is no definite date set, as things do happen in the real world to distract him.

From this point onwards, please refrain from personal attacks, as such behaviour will cause you to be banned from these forums.

Is that a period?

Dear Ryan McCue,

I respected the period in your subject and decided not to answer any more. Yet, as you can see there is another reply from a certain "argbulo", in the same familiar tone that forced me to attempt some protection from further nonsense, in the posts that you called "personal attacks".

So, it should be clear now. You should direct your advice to others, not me.
