2 questions, one for John, the other for everyone.
Nummer Eins:
How about putting a development team with access to the Subversion repository to work together on the next version of the menu?
Nummer Zwei:
If said team was put together, who would volunteer to be on it?

we don't find a consitent way to publish our apps after beta (a very easy issue imho). how should it be arranged to develop together ??? sorry for my negative mind.

ps : nice denglisch
working together in a team is a good idea and I'll be happy to be a part of it but ...
The only person who is able to publish a new PortableAppsMenu version is John, cause he is the copyright holder for the icon an the name PortableApps.
Everyone could release a menu based on his (or modified by another person) menu but in this case he need the permission by John to call it "PortableAppsMenu" and to use the icon, default theme and so on or he had to remove the PortableApps related stuff.
@John I think that's what You said in another menu tread, right?

i think this also includes even more apps and it is 100% clear. but (addressed again @ marko or john) what happens with all the developments (for example on the menu) after beta ? not all apps can be merged to one app.
sorry again for negative mind but meanwhlie i get a little agree

ps : just an idea ... maybe a chat can clear the situation ?!
Actually, the trademark is PortableApps.com, not PortableApps.
Let me just say now, there will not be a new version of the PAM.
Anyway, my idea was to have us all working together in Subversion, so that we could constantly improve it.

No PAM 2?
-----------------------------------
There are 10 kind of people in this world: those who understand binary, and those with friends.
If you read through some of the forums, this has been hinted at before.
The general gist I am getting is that something new is coming to replace PAM.
If your looking for additional functionality in the mean time you can try Netroid9's Mod or my menu SmithTech Portable Menu

I'm actually using Netroid's menu, but I was kinda looking forward to PAM 2.

Seems like it is still coming, just won't be called PAM anymore.

... in the most of the PAM clones there are the icon and the PortableApps.com Branding, that's what I ment.
We could make a new menu together or every one by himself but we could not use this stuff without John's permission.
As I said. The idea is good (in order to don't get some incompatible menu versions) and I'll be on board if there is a way to do it which way ever.

I think it is a good idea although I don't know whether John would like this. Cause till today he seemed to be rather reluctant to do so or even take part in the discussion. (No offense intended!!!)
I don't think I could be of a lot assistance (other than suggesting stuff and testing) as the only language I speak (besides english and german) is NSIS :-).
“Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts” - Richard P. Feynman
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
If I understand Ryan's idea correctly, he doesn't mean making alternative PAMs like Simeon's or Netroid9's, but rather having the bleeding edge source code for PAM 2 (whatever it's actual name might come to be) in SVN, so all those who speak Delphi can help John with the Menu, and those who speak NSIS can help with the installer, and everyone (or a group of people expressly authorized) can add to what's in SVN.
The trademark and branding issues become inexistant from the moment these are not "other" menus, but just people helping John with the one and only original Portable Apps Menu®
Of course, everyone would be advised that the source code in SVN is the bleeding edge, and as such has the newest features but could have all sorts of bugs, so don't go there unless you're very brave or very foolish or both.
And from time to time, there would be a call to stop adding features, and thoroughly debug what's already in there, and when satisfied with the new feature set and its quality, John would make a zip and call it Version [previous + 1] and make it an official release, also apt for cowards, rookies, and any other kind of non-brave-or-foolish people.
I would love to see this happen. I would love to see all those little additions currently being made to different alternative menus go into one same Menu with the sum of all cool features. I would love to help with the coding. And I would love to see a more Open Source Style developement. Something more collaborative, not just having the source after the program is out, together with the promise that any changes I make to it will be superseded by the impending new version.
Of course:
@Ryan: please correct me if I misunderstood you.
@John: it's up to you to pick whatever developement style you like the most. You're the creator and owner of this, so it's yours to do with it as you please. You don't need me to tell you that. And we'll all still be gratefull for all this hard work you've put into this and for all the hard work you probably will go on to put into it, and for the quality software you're providing. That won't change. "Opening more" (sooner, before release) the code is only what "I" (and probably others) would like, but still your call.
That's exactly how I envisioned it. Thanks for clarifying
Although, in SVN, instead of a call to stop adding features, you simply branch/tag. Usually, you'll branch for the next version and the main line will simply correct bugs, etc, and these will be ported over to the branch. Once it gets released, you tag it as, say, release 1.4

Yep, that's one good way of working with Subversion.
But there's one thing Subversion doesn't do for you. And the manual say's it loud and clear: it doesn't keep the members of the team communicated. They have to do that by themselves. Otherwise, you get conflicts when updating, etc.
So when you branch, you still have to tell all the team what to do with the trunk and the branch.
But you obviously get the picture.
Ideally, I'd like to have the same thing. I have a few things I'm working through to make that happen.
1. I'm not really as familiar with SVN as I should be. I've used it to check out code from other projects, but haven't used it full on as a developer.
2. I'm asking SF about combining the 9 different projects the apps are distributed across into the main portableapps project. It would be easier to manage. And all the other projects are using the old names anyway (portablefirefox, for instance).
3. I'm finalizing the licensing of the PortableApps.com Menu. It's still GPLed (of course), but an additional permission is being added that will allow it to be linked with specific closed source DLLs published by PortableApps.com. These binaries will act as a go-between between the GPLed menu and manufacturer's closed source binaries that allow access to higher-end drive features (passwords, encryption, etc). None of the manufacturers were willing to release APIs or go open source (I tried), so this seemed like a good way of allowing us as an open community to be able to get access to them without having to go the closed source route. And, it would prevent any manufacturers from splitting off the menu and closing it (which would be possible if we switched to BSD, for instance) and then forking it and not making their changes available back to us.
4. I'd need to figure out who to put in charge of what. Ryan and Steve have been around for a while and I trust them to do the right thing (for those who don't know, Ryan had full mod access to the site in January while I was offline for a couple weeks after I watched one of my best friends get hit by a car and then helped take care of him). Marko and Simeon have been around long enough that I trust them with the translation stuff as well (I think I floated to Marko to be the overall translation lead, but I can't recall).
5. I'm still swamped trying to keep the site online and trying to make a few deals with manufacturers and software publishers to allow the site/platform to be self-sustaining. We're already the oldest portable setup with the most popular portable app in the world (Firefox Portable) and the most popular platform (by far) with the best media coverage, but I want to ensure that it's going to be around 5 years from now even while some of our commercial competitors fail. I've already transitioned off my last paying development client... so I'm staking my future, life savings and investment from family in this.
So, that's the long and longer of it. I'm still trying to get the next package of the menu up. I wound up stuck working on the installer for OO for hours on Sunday, so I missed my window. I should have more time this week.
J

Are the German pages linked to from anywhere? I'd personally love to have the flags as buttons, particularly the ones from FamFamFam.com

You're right it should be done.

It's something John has to do, since it would require editing of the themes. If it's just adding it to the pages, I can do it easily.

there is no translation for What is a portable app? box and user data box
because the "Whats a portable App" page isn't up yet.

Then check out the German Firefox page...

... for all You've done to keep this project alive and make such a great success.
You know it takes a while to understand all the things You have to handle an solve like the license issues and so on.
I'm still willing to help out wherever You want and also as 'translation lead' ;-).
Thanks to simeon and andreasma we have now all app and a lot of support pages in German too. You can find them at http:/portableapps.com/de/apps.
If You want, we can offer now all portable apps in German too (if there are not multilang versions). And like I said it several times we can offer OOoP in other languages (we have requests for dutch, french an spanish versions).

1. I would recommend something like SmartSVN. It makes it easy to manage a repository and the interface is really very easy to use, the quick start guide is handy as well.
2. Now that is a good idea,it would shoot you up the Sourceforge download rankings as well
3. Sounds like tat is the best possible way to do it if they do not wnat to go open source. Also are you planning on going GPL3?
4. *Puts on evil voice* Excellent *back to normal voice* If you don't mind I'll send you what I hope could be the final Toucan 1.0 package today, I'll send off the final stuff to the translators as well.

Hi Steve,
send it to markomlm[at]openoffice.org.
I'll have a little look into the source code for the strings for translation.
Then I'll post them in the Translation Forum asking for other translation then German OK?

currently there are four completed languages, minus the final 1.0 changes, German, Spanish, French and Polish. I'll send you a copy of the emails of the team and a quick over view, everything is done using PoEdit so it's nice and easy.

I'll set a hint in the forum entry for the other translators where they will find PoEdit
The Installer-Strings are always translated for this Langs, but there are now 4 strings more for the new launcher. If they will translated too we could create native installer for the new App too

SmartSVN has the advantage of being portable (well someone posted instructions on how to "portabilize" it...). But I still like Tortoise better. Perhaps it's that it's the first SVN client I've used, "first love", you know...
I agree with what you said. Except for the first love part
