Look for it on http://www.robloach.net/project/portableapplications

Is free, open source and portable...

Actually.

John just re-did it, check the beta forums.

P.S. DownThemAll! is available as an extension for Firefox.

The difference is that

The difference is that Wackget uses one connection and others (like dTa!) use multiple connections. On a high-speed line, this makes a big difference.

Yeah

WackGet plays nice. Download 'accelerators' play badly by sucking up multiple download slots on a server and preventing others from being able to download.

Not really

It's gotten much more difficult to do this with all the proxies out there. If you check the current connections to this server in top, you'll see IPs with 75 or more concurrent connections. These are shared proxies at large ISPs.

So, yeah, whether you like it or not, when you use a download accelerator on a busy server, you're stealing someone else's download slot. The same way you're making a site slow for everyone else when you use FasterFox, etc.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I only see a real problem if either:
A. the person is using way too many connections (there is little if any difference in speed with any subsequent connections)
or
B. the server is typically very busy and the person knows it, but uses many connections anyway

Slots and Cost

With downloads, servers often have a certain number of slots available for connections. Taking up more than one pushes others out when it's busy.

In the case of FasterFox, it adds additional load and additional bandwidth, which costs $.

In either case, if there's a simple script to auto-ban people that use either, I plan on implementing it.

This is all very fascinating

This is all very fascinating and I wasnt aware of the differences. I currently use Orbit download manager which I dont believe is a accelorator, could be wrong and I'll stop if it is. i have used accelorators before and what i'm using now looks very different in that it doesnt seem to have multiple connections, it does however auto resume which is why i use it.

Hmm

If you had the money, you could get a grid computing server up. Now that would be cool. Biggrin
(Note: just kidding, the site's good enough already [except for those MySQL errors {although, MySQL sucks sometimes (I wonder what the next set of brackets would be?)}])

Stop playing God

Ok Ryan, I assume your having a go at my spelling. It must be really hard having that God complex. just to give you some background when i was 9 i was hit by a lorry and part of my head was caved in this in turn produced irreversible brain damage. something i've had to live with now for over 30 years . some days my brain has a problem and my arm shakes and wont work at all. I think i do very well and think that people who have nothing better to do than pick up on peoples spelling mistakes rather than helping others are the ones with the real disability.
I forgive you though, I would just ask that before you make judgements on people.

P.s, i tried really hard with this one and used a spell checker. feel free to correct me ryan.

Whoa,

Calm down a bit. I think Ryan was just trying to be helpful by pointing out an error. He doesn't have a "God complex", he was just trying to be helpful. Don't jump down his throat for it.

P.S. You can't tell if somebody is impaired over the 'net, so we can't take that into account.

Not really

Lots of people on here are bad spellers. And it's routinely made into a joke. Heck, i was incapable of spelling "separately" before Firefox 2's integrated spell checker started helping me out with forum posts. (I still say it should be "seperately"... but that's just me.)

What?

It's not? Haha. Wow. I'm dumb. Sad

And thank goodness for Firefox's Spell Check, but I still miss it and sometimes write "probally" which seems good to me, but when I say it, it just sounds messed up.

It's just somebody trying to help somebody else.

Could a mod lock this thread? It's getting rather off-topic and seems to have been answered as much as it ever will.

Cant we all just get along?

What I like about this forum (which not many have, I have read a few) is that we get along very well. There's a lot of joking and "hurtful" comments that are said every now and then. But everybody here (specially those who have been here longer) know that whatever is said is just to get a good, cheap laugh and is not to be taken personally.

Just to let you know, everybody who posted something in this particular thread have been here for quite a while, and if you were to read other threads, you will see a lot of this going on between them.

Assume personal?

What I don't understand is why you assumed it was personal? The point is, much of what happens online is not personal in any way shape or form. But if you're out looking for it to be, you'll find it quite easily.

Besides, accelerator is right. *YOU* spelled it right. Accelerater is wrong. Ryan was pointing it out to Bensawesome (another regular) who spelled it right and wrong in the same post. Ryan's post had NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH YOU. Which is why I still can't understand why you out of the blue took offense to it.

In the original post, you spelled it right. Ryan was picking on bensawesome for spelling it accelerator and accelerater in the same post. Absolutely NOTHING to do with you. And yet you assumed it was a personal attack and called Ryan out for it.

I really would like to put this to bed John. but before I do can I say that I think your mis-reading something.

You say "Ryan was picking on bensawesome for spelling it accelerator and accelerater"
bensawsome actually posted "Is wackget an accelerator? I thought it was just a download accelorater"

You also say "Besides, accelerator is right. *YOU* spelled it right. Accelerater is wrong"

I posted, in my origional post "Orbit download manager which I dont believe is a accelorator"

Ryan posted in his origional post "What's the difference between an accelerator and an accelorater."

Notice the spelling of 'accelorater'? that is how bensawsome and myself both posted it.

I did assume it was directed at me but i could have been at just one or both. Anyway can we lock it please?

.

OK, I've read most of what everyone said.

I'd like to say that it was in no way aimed at any of your comments or your original post. The joke was to bensawsome, as I saw no difference between the two. I was simply pointing out his bad spelling, which he doesn't do often (AFAICM).

I apologise for my comment, as it was directed at Ben and not you.

You're all getting off the topic here!!!

Everyone, would you please stop whining about the "spelling" thing!!! I mean, everybody has his share of mistakes, so it doesn't matter if he did commit the error. It doesn't make him less a human being!

Anyway, onto the issue. Umm, I just went to the robloach.net site but I couldn't find the link for downloading WackGet. Is there no other alternative portable download accelerators and are you not going to make such an app?

Umm, WackGet is pretty beat, but I really expected more.. Since I'm on broadband, I would generally prefer a download manager app with multi-source connection (sorry for those on dial-up), like TrueDownloader or other open-source download managers/accelerators. Please try to make one, Mr. Haller. This is my request.
