Note taking app

"The Guide"

http://theguide.sourceforge.net/

has been mentioned here before, but the application is not totally portable in it's current state. However it's a great note taking app and I would appreciate a portable version.
Stated to be Opensource as well.

You could go with A Note

You could go with A Note Portable or PNotes Portable. I am not a programmer, so I really can't answer other than that for you.

NeoMem

I have a portable version of NeoMem that I'd put together. It's a similar concept. There are a couple differences though. NeoMem works on Win9x and has a built-in search and indexing feature. The interface is a bit more complicated than TheGuide and it's not being developed any longer (though the author did setup a Google Code account).

Always

Willing to test whatever John releases. I have around 130 portable apps I use/test ect but I keep them seperate from PA.Com releases. All in my Pstart menu except the non-PA.Com stuff is in a root dir called Testing, heh.

Even if some apps are similar to others its nice to have a choice. Lots of people would agree I'm sure.

Choice vs Best Foot Forward (and time)

Choice is good but only to a point. After that point, it becomes overwhelming. (Psychological studies have even proven this point.)

As such, the goal is to package the cream of the crop for portable use rather than every single open source (and soon freeware/commercial) app there is.

So, I'd love it if a few people could try out Neomem and TheGuide and give some feedback.

Well

In that case I vote for Neomem.

More functionality and looks a whole h#ll of a lot better. that's my vote anyway.

Tried both

I have tried both, and came to the conclusion that The Guide suited my needs better.

My conclusions

1. The Guide is easier to use
2. NeoMem is more advanced with objects and encryption, more like a database, for good and bad, but I don't need the advanced functionality.
3. The Guide has a much better export feature, which is crucial for me. I have been stuck in applications that where dropped by the developer and no way out, except retyping everything into another app, so this is a dealbreaker for me... NeoMem's export function is not good. The Guide can export to standard RTF files so it seems more "future safe". Each record looks like they did in the app after export
4. NeoMem seems "half-dead" when it comes to development. The Guide is actively developed.

Therefore my vote goes to The Guide...(especially with the risk having encrypted notes in an app that is not actively developed)

Looks like good option

It might be a good option to offer along with PNotes Portable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but NeoMem looks like it has the ability for more detailed notes where PNotes seems more appropriate for short and simple notes for reminders and such.

I also noticed there was a note on his blog from July 19th (of this year) that he's still plugging away at improving it, but he hasn't reached the stage to release a never version yet. At least that's how I understood it.

Very Different

PNotes is a sticky note app (similar to Post It notes on your desk).

Neomem and TheGuide are outliners... designed for creating a hierarchical structure of notes around a given topic or topics.

I contacted the Neomem author back in April but didn't hear back.

In that case

In the past, I've tried to take notes using word processors during university classes, and found in many cases a lot of formatting after the fact to make the notes flow well.

If my understanding of your description is semi-accurate, this program would provide a structure for note taking then. If that's case, I think that Neomem would make an excellent addition.

Thank you for clarifying that.

NeoMem.

I found the guide a while back when I was looking for a good sticky note app, I just passed on by it, but I'm liking NeoMem better, and it will be pretty handy to have on the go I must say.

I know it's not open source...

But Stickies is my favorite note taking app in the whole world. Ryan McCue is working on a launcher for it and if he would ever finish it that would make it in the PA format. However the author explans how to make it portable here.

Different

Again, what we're discussing is very different from a sticky note app. It's a note taking app.

And, go check out PNotes Portable in the beta forums and comment there. The author is participating and taking suggestions. It's open source, free and will soon be released on this site.

My vote is for TheGuide

I've now played around wih both and found that I like TheGuide better than Neomem. Simpler (may be a minus for those wanting a few more capabilities), lets me insert pictures, and appears to be active.
